Rate my mid tier build

Hi guys, my current PC is old (4th gen i5 I think) and has served me well but is due for an upgrade. I like the idea of mid tier so would like to build another mid tier PC. Budget can be upto 1.5k , no monitor. Purpose is for gaming and video editing. Open to ideas, my current plan is:

Ryzen 3600
2x8GB DDR 3200 ram - which brand is best?
B450 tomahawk - I think this is compatible after some sort of bios flash ?
1tb Samsung Evo SSD
5700 xt - I hear sapphire is the best value, though not sure. Stay away from msi is what I've read.
Carbide 275r case
750w bronze PSU - best brand and is this appropriate for the build plus extra drives stated below?

Plus 1x SSD and 2x HDD, and pcie xonar DX sound card from my current PC.

Thanks all, I really appreciate the input from those in the know! I'm also unsure if I'll only get marginal gains with the video card as opposed to getting something less powerful.

Ps. With the 10% eBay code, I can get the above for just under 1.5k.

Sounds good to me! If you already have a decent SSD, the modern EVO performance is not hugely better, so don't feel pressed to upgrade there. I would guess 750W is actually overkill for this build, check with a calculator like pcpartpicker first but you might get away with a 600W with better efficiency

  • I am building something very similar: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/WkD2b8

I would probably suggest a 3600 MHz memory which is the sweet spot for Ryzen (CL16). As for brand, doesn't really matter but the G.SKILL RipJaws usually go on sale, but just get whatever is cheapest tbh.

Yeah you can bios flash the tomahawk or u can get the tomahawk max.

You can either find a 2070Super on sale or aim for Red Devil Power Colour / Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT.

    650W is probably enough.

    • You could probably get away with a 550w.
For video editing, fast SSD is important as a cache scratch disk.
5700xt is rather overkill for video editing, and 1080p
32GB recommended, such as the 32gb kit for $190 atm.
      3600 good cpu
If you can reuse the psu you have, then you are looking at
      280 for 3600
I would go for a EVO SSD or a Sabrent Rocket, though there is some reviews of hardware failure, 1TB $250
      $170 for a Zen 2 compatible mobo
      1660 SUPER $330
So, just for the internals you have a total of 1220

  • Corsair, Kingston and G.Skill for RAM.

Corsair, Seasonic, Super Flower and Silverstone for PSU.

600-650W PSU is enough for this build. SSD and hard drives don’t use much power.

  • if you dont need this right away, ryzen 4000 is coming out real soon… so either massive savings on 3000/2000 series or you get the latest tech

  • Thanks all for the replies. I can wait for the 4000 - is that targetting mid tier market?

  • 4000 series will (eventually at least) be the complete range refreshed essentially. So there will be a R5 4600 which would be the direct replacement of the R5 3600 that's out now.

Not sure why stay away from MSI - MSI is a solid brand in Australia backed by the same warranty as the other market leaders. MSI would be my top choice for brand of GPU. I always go with them for motherboard too.

I believe Sapphire is (often) the best value because they get reduced pricing from AMD due to Sapphire being exclusively AMD, not offering any Nvidia options. I could be wrong. Although the 5700 XT represents the best value, I would likely still steer towards Nvidia as they're current market leaders, and their RTX offerings. Seems a bit more of a complete solution. It's currently Nvidia's game to lose.

You can definitely get away with a 550w bronze or higher PSU. 750w is a bit more than overkill, even 650w would be. 550w would be enough, but may be somewhat limiting in terms of upgradability in future. Perhaps find a decent 650w if upgrading is a likelihood?

Corsair case is a solid choice.

    Good luck. =]

  • Make sure to buy the "Max" boards from MSI. Tomahawk and mortar are both good choices.

  • Thanks all - with the recent 12% off Amazon , i couldn't resist the going the ryzen 5 3600 for $253.

Got other parts, but now waiting on video card - missed out on the recent 2070 super deal .would be 1440p gaming
