Tomy Thomas Big Loader Playset $39.95 (Normally $49.95) + Shipping @ Mr Toys Toyworld

60

This Thomas playset is regularly discounted to $39.00. Big deal, you say. Yes, but this playset is probably the greatest marvel of engineering to ever be cast in ABS plastic. Set it up, and you can sit there for hours watching Thomas take the balls, hand them over to Percy and watch Terrence scoop them up again, with the only thing disturbing your tranquil being having to yell at your kids every five minutes "DONT TOUCH IT LEAVE IT ALONE YOU'LL ONLY RUIN IT I WORKED TOO HARD PUTTING IT TOGETHER FOR YOU TO SCREW IT UP". Otherwise, good times.

Lol. This brings back memories when my son loved Thomas / Percy and we had the Japanese set of this.

They’re not made like they used to be… the skins fall off and balls get stuck under the grader skin. Kmart had/has these for $20 in the Thomas toy section.

    • I have the vintage Post Office Loader playset and most of the vintage version of this playset. Generally speaking the modern version is more reliable. I have to put Vaseline on the older engine bases to get them to work reliably, they have changed the shape of the engine car to make this less of an issue. I can get this one to run for well over half an hour without any hiccups.

I don't bring out the post office Loader very much as it's more finicky and also the gears that operate Harold are prone to breaking at the hands of children.

  • This has peaked my interest. Daughter just turned 3 so is beginning to love this kind of stuff, started buying her hotwheels city stuff (got the ultimate Garage, the one with the shark that doesn't work).

Is there a collection of Thomas type setups similar to this?

    • There is this one and the old post office Loader which is no longer being sold here but you can find it on gumtree.

You are teaching kids that coal is a good thing! On a rubbish bit of plastic junk. Are there not preferable alternative concepts these days.

This is a fair old blast from the past - I hadn't thought about this for 20 years despite being one of my favourite toys. I would get one for my kids, but as I recall from having a much younger brother, the balls end up in toddlers mouths more often than not. Hopefully the deal shoots up in another year or so.
