Looking to Buy New/near New SUV or Sedan for Parents Budget $60-70k

Hi All,

I am looking to buy my parents a new car as a gift and seeking suggestions.
As suggested below, they will be invovled in the final selection process. Probably looking to shortlist down to 5 models brand combination. Then have them pick.

They have always wanted a luxury car of the below brands:

Merc
BMW
Lexus
Audi

They are not "car people", that is they don't really care about acceleration, handling, tech ect.

All they care is
The badge
SUV or large sedan
Some nice interior trim
Brand new/Demo

Budget below 70k

They will probably own the car for 5-6 yr then sell it off, depreciation probably won't be their concern as it is a gift.

Why am i doing this, you may ask?
Well my parents have saved vigorously all their life to send me to private schools and give me the best chance to succeed.
Now I have got some money, I would like to buy them something nice.
They've been talking about buying a entry level luxury car for a while now, but unless I buy it for them I doubt their frugal mentality would allow them to do so.

Comments

          • @spackbace: That's my point. Neither will an X5, Q7, GLC etc. So why go through the heart ache of purchasing a euro car and all its hassles. Atleast a 200 has a good grounding and reputation in Australia.

            • @TheBilly: But all of them are much bigger than the CRV the parents are replacing. The LC is a tank in comparison.

  • I just helped my mum get a new car, she's coming from a Benz, but my old man wanted to replace her car. He had a Model 3 reserved for her, but she refuses to have an electric car (she claims she wants to hear the sound of an engine). She actually refused to even sit in one or go to the store. She didn't want a new car at all, but her car was 6 years old and needs replacement. It was also too big for her, she's 70 years old and parking it was an issue. I was looking in your budget too, and came to a conclusion that the best value car in that price range (after negotiations) was the BMW X3. It's the same price as the 3 series, but you get better interior space and an AWD system. She ended up getting an X3 3.0i with the M sport package (not for the bling, but the options included). My old man didn't want a diesel for her, her Benz was a diesel. The X3 is much better than the GLC (which is really outdated inside), and a bit better than an Audi Q5, which matches it on paper, but requires some pretty serious options to bring it up to the BMW spec. Even then I don't think I saw one with adaptive suspension (which she will never use) or a heads up display.

Tell your fussy mother to go get her own car.

I recommend a GLE with grab handles since she seems like she is scared behind the wheels.

      • She has a new car. She would have no idea what to get, what she needs or even that she needed a new car.

        • Yeah, fair enough. My mum is the same except she is not fussy.

          • @Numlock: She's not fussy, she didn't want a new car at all. She especially didn't want a Tesla. She's driven multiple Teslas but doesn't like them, because she's set in her ways.

    • What model a X3 3.0i?

  • Dear OP
Your parents wont give two hoots about what anyone says here.
    Your parents are not ozbargainers.

So with respect to all posters, just disregard all comments here and take them for a drive down auto alley and let them decide.

    Remember its THEIR choice.
Not yours, or anyone else's here on OzB

From what you say they know what they want
So start by asking them where they want to start

    • just looking to narrow down to about 4 or 5 models so they are not too overwhelmed.

  • As someone has just mentioned Mercedes GLC is a strong recommendation as it convenient for elderly especially with high clearance. Easy to get on and off. It is a very comfortable car with lumbar support. You can get a demonstrator for $70K ish with around 5000 Kms. Goodluck.

    • good idea, sounds like one i will go check it out.

  • they are not car ppl but are unsure which a really expensive car to buy….. 1st world problems

  • +1

If you are happy to look a little cheaper. I just got a Subaru Forester, awesome car with near perfect safety features.

  • +1

It’s not on your list but the Alfa Romeo Stelvio might be suitable.

Great badge. And they always have beautiful interiors. Also good car if you don’t care about depreciation.

    • forgot about it, a definite head turner on the roads

  • New Genesis G80 suv looks pretty luxurious but not a European badge though. Might save you some dollars..

And you are such a good son OP, looking after your parents:D

    • +2

did you read he said 70k, that think will be close to 100k drive away when it comes out here

      • I didn't know a Hyundai is that expensive.

  • What a nice child you are, good on you!

@[Deactivated]: ''tacky inside compared to the Europeans'' thats all you had to say and now i know who im talking to, a badge snob who knows nothing about cars and reliability. if only the Germans could outlast or be as reliable as a jap, but it will never happen.

            • -6

@striker5950: The only reason Toyotas are so reliable is that the tech is ancient and under stressed. They are reliable. But they are boring, slow and uninteresting. Anyone who endorses a Lexus of the plethora of superior competition should hardly question another person's automotive knowledge (LFA aside). After all Lexus are literally luxury cars for people who know nothing about cars. Look up the entomology of the name if you think that I'm joking.

I think what you meant is that unless you are a badge snob a Lexus is a perfectly good example of a well built, well appointed vehicle with good reliability and resale value. No one MEEDS anything more than a Camry. Some people get suckered in by all the hype about the fancy badge, others recognise that Lexus are exactly what the purport to be, without as much badge tax as a BMW.

                • -2

@Euphemistic: If you knew anything about cars, you’d know that pretty much every Lexus is a vastly inferior machine to anything BMW makes (or any German car really, including VW) and years behind someone like Tesla.

@[Deactivated]: Read or watch any genuine reviews on the Teslas, the ones who own it beyond the initial "oh this things cool" phase. You'll hear about ultra-thin paint, mismatched panel gaps, etc etc.

By no means are Tesla the benchmark on how to build a car in 2020

                    • -3

@spackbace: No, you’re basing your criticism on 3 year old YouTube videos and here say. You’ve got a vested interest to spread the FUD, Tesla will likely decimate employment opportunities in your line of work. The Tesla build process in 2020 is top notch. Panel gaps and paint shop issues are a thing of the past. Just look at the latest models out of the China factory as an example of just that. Tesla isn’t the world’s second
largest car company in the world by market cap because they make crappy vehicles.

                        Yeah no.

People still trade cars (which they need help with), they test drive cars (which they don't with Tesla, they order in advance based on pictures and descriptions), and people still haggle (which they can't with Tesla).

Going to take decades to change the status quo

                        I'd wait for an all-electric BMW before I suggested a $70k Tesla.

I'd also never drive a Tesla because of any thoughts of premium manufacturing. It would be purely for that range and acceleration, which won't take long for the others to catch up.

German built, with a Tesla engine would be best of both worlds.

                        • -1

@spackbace: You’re not forward thinking. Tesla is disrupting the segment. They are crushing the competition in sales overseas and here (The Model 3 outsold the 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 series in the States combined last year, likewise with the Mercedes line up). Brands are going to disappear because they can’t compete. Mercedes are already moving to the Tesla sales structure with the EQC.

BMW made an all electric car, it was rubbish. They have a new one coming out, and as with all the other European attempts, it’s falling short of what Tesla has to offer, with the promised range already dropping before release.

You’re giving an uniformed opinion based of your biases and fears, but if you look at the real picture, every German manufacturer has now had a attempt at dethroning Tesla, and so far they’ve all come up well short. Not one of them has even beaten the 2012 Model S’ range, let alone the current model. There is only one game in town and it’s literally years ahead of the competition.

If you want a German built Tesla wait till 2021, they’ve just started building Gigafactory Berlin.

                    • @spackbace: yes you can see the panel gaps from meters away triggered my ocd.

Here we go again with your extreme language singing the praises of euro and Tesla.

Cars have four wheels some seats and a motor. The provide transport from A to B. The cheap ones do it just as effectively for 90% of driving. They use similar amounts of fuel to do so.

Sure, the more expensive ones do it a bit better and with a few extra unnecessary features, but a BMW is not that different from a Kia to get the job done. Would I like to own a luxury car? Yes. Do I need one? Absolutely not. This is ozbargain, where people try to save money and buying a luxury vehicle is probably the biggest waste of money there is.

You’ve been drinking the Kool Aid a bit too long now.

                    • -2

@Euphemistic: There you go. So cars are transport from A to B, but you profess to being an aficionado. OK. This is the problem with car advice on ozbargain, you get so called experts like this guy who are happy to give you their opinion, despite knowing absolutely nothing. It's kind of like when a vegan lets you know they are a vegan (10 times) and gives you diet advice.

                      • @[Deactivated]: And experts such as yourself that exaggerate the benefits of overly expensive vehicles. Yes, BMW etc are probably better technology, but it isn’t ‘vastly’ superior as indicated by your first comment. You might know about them, but you come off as a know-it-all instead of giving a balanced view.

I’ll profess to not knowing the ins and outs of the latest models, largely because I believe they are too expensive and do not have that much extra value compared to something a few years old. I am a bit of a petrol head at heart, but I’m also a realist and know that all that stuff is so far out of my price range it’s not going to happen.

                        • @Euphemistic: You know nothing John Snow

                          • @[Deactivated]: The C63 AMG in my family is giving us so many headaches and Mercedes customer service are just not acknowledging the faults. My friend already took them to court to get this resolved. I don't want to go through it but it's basically a take it or leave it situation with Mercedes.

I have family members who drive a Lexus RX, GX and a ES300h. They have beautiful interiors with true Japanese modesty and luxury. Very precise in all their details.

                            • @Numlock: So your family member drives a Lexus GX, a car that has never been sold in Australia?

So your family member drives a Lexus GX, a car that has never been sold in Australia?

                                Yes, in California

                              • @[Deactivated]: It seems you have a set bias against Lexus (Japanese makes) and a pro stance towards the German makes.

Would you please let us know which cars you own or drive so we know where you come from?

Personally, I have no issues with Lexus and think that would be the ideal choice for OPs parents. I know others who think the same as you (dressed up Toyota).

Also Tesla opened the Tesla Giga Shanghai in China last month which the vast majority of Aus imports will now be from.

                                • @khomeini: Tesla has zero plans to export any cars from the China Gigafactory at the moment. They’ve never even suggested it.

                                  • @[Deactivated]: Depends on who you speak with (or whether Google has that information). I'm looking at a future Tesla (model Y) and was recently told that for our region it would likely come from the Shanghai factory.

Also, my primary question… what cars do you currently drive? This will help us understand why you don't prefer Lexus or other Japanese cars.

              • @[Deactivated]:

After all Lexus are literally luxury cars for people who know nothing about cars.

Which means they are PERFECT for about 50% of the boomer population.

Your view is very narrow. Lexus appeal to many boomers because they have all the tech, are very nice inside (contrary to your clearly uninformed view).

                Bad advice.

                • @Skramit: They definitely do not have all the tech. Their infotainment is pretty much the worst in the industry.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Yes the infotainment is sub standard in terms of the interface but people buying a Lexus suv likely just have the radio on ABC news anyway;) Lexus have at least now started including Apple CarPlay. The mouse pad thing is awful but once you’re used to it it’s ok.

But I mostly meant safety tech and gadgets like Heads up display, 360 camera, auto parking etc.

                    • @Skramit: The game has moved on. It’s all about autonomous driving, BMW’s latest system is reasonable now, so is Volvos. And no one has anything on Tesla. Lexus don’t have a decent system.

                      • @[Deactivated]: Okay. But that’s nothing to do with OPs forum post. You’re on another planet.

                        • @Skramit: It's about as much to do with the OP's post as your reply. He asked for suggestions of good cars.

                          • @[Deactivated]: Lexus are good cars.

                            • @Skramit: Sure, if you like outdated cars. I mean you might as well buy a 5 year old second hand X5 over an Lexus RX. It's going to be way more up to date and half the price.

          • @[Deactivated]: A complex hybrid system which is less polluting and more efficient than a comparable polluting german diesel and a whole lot more reliable too or a 3.5 V6 Petrol which has port injection and direct injection both and can also run an Atkinson cycle which is as efficient as a 2.0 turbo petrol in a big german SUV running a plastic water pump. What is your definition of ancient? As for tacky, I am sure you havent sat in a Lexus ever because thats the last thing even the adversaries say about one. Even a humble Corolla would outlast the best from Germany or Europe and Lexus is the actual benchmark for reliability and service.

            • @dealsucker: Clearly he sat in a lexus 15 years ago and hasn't since. The interior is far from tacky these days and is very comfortable and luxurious in their latest models. It's certainly not on par with the latest Audi interior (personal experience) but still very very good.

  • -1

Another option could be a second hand Porsche Macan. I know you didn’t care about driveability but I’d argue that the Porsche has better badge pedigree than BMW/merc.

  • With 60 to 70k you can't get a decent well brand new car, bump up 80k you may have chance.

    • He can get a Tesla Model 3 for $73k

    • +3

Yep, as we all know $80k opens up many doors esp at a Big 4 bank
      :P

  • Good on you for wanting to get it as a gift for parents OP =)

I'd recommend the Lexus NX300h like several others have suggested above

I'd assume most, if not all, of the mentioned luxury brands will be comfortable to a good extent as you take then with you for car shopping/testing. However, the reliability of Lexus/Toyota is just too hard to overlook, especially when you said they aren't "car people" (although the hybrid likely will be pretty responsive to start). Running and maintenance of the car will be just as important, as it is a gift for your own parents, fuel costs is going to be lower with the hybrid, and if any required maintenance cost it is likely to be lower than the European cars.

Maybe include a poll for people to vote too?

  • i would say a Lexus or Volvo xc40

  • If you're willing to wait, you should checkout Genesis GV80. It's supposedly a game changer car for the brand and will be priced below their European counterparts. You get more value for your bucks and it looks super awesome.

    https://carbuzz.com/features/5-reasons-why-the-genesis-gv80-…

While Lexus looks great on the outside, the inside is a bit outdated compared to other luxury brands.

    • Looks super American. Kinda fat and overly flashy.

Anyone who is interested in the badge of a Euro is unlikely to go for an unproven newcomer. There is a reason those fancy Nissan’s didn’t sell well.

  • Chrysler 300c Luxury would set you back from $61900 brand new. https://www.chrysler.com.au/300c.html

Very comfortable to drive and they look pretty nice IMO.

  • Make sure they understand the maintenance costs for a luxury car. Everything is more expensive, not just the car.

    That being said.

    SUV; Audi Q5
    Sedan; Mercedes c200

    • Why would you choose a Q5 in this segment?

And why would you choose a C200?

These seem like odd choices, the Q5 is good, but objectively seems inferior to the X3, the C200 is ageing and seems inferior to the 320i and vastly inferior to the Model 3 for the same price.

What are you reasons for these choices?

      • Firstly they fit the description given from the op. Secondly they were some of few cars I shortlisted when purchasing my car(actually c300). They were both great to drive. Audi was classy, refined and feels like a high quality product. Prefer the looks also. I did also shortlist a x4 but not a fan of the x3. Haven't driven a model 3 or any Tesla though so I can't comment there but I would definately look into it next time I'm in the market.

        • It’s interesting that you chose cars that clearly aren’t the best in class. There’s nothing wrong with the Audi, it’s fine, but the X3 is better and I think the XC60 is at least equal. The C class us just old at this point.

  • I know it's not the same but if you got the folks to chip in a little, you could really up the ante and not have to sift through all of these compromises.

  • If they want something in a similar size to a Honda CRV, why not consider a VW Tiguan Highline 🤔

  • OP don't forget that there's a luxury car tax of 33% on the value above the threshold for this financial year at $67,525.

    https://www.ato.gov.au/rates/luxury-car-tax-rate-and-thresho…

    • Which is included in any advertised drive away price

  • The Volvo XC40 is really nice, and practical too

    • Also really expensive for what it is. You can get a XC60 for the same money with some haggling. Obviously a better choice.

      • I can confirm this was the case 1 year ago. The XC40 is expensive, possibly due to no discounts due to demand.

There was little drive-away pricing between the XC40 and XC60. We got the XC60 12 months ago.

        It may be different today.

Get a Tesla Model 3 or go home.

P.S. Oh, and don't listen to anyone who talks crap about Tesla. They don't own one, and 95% of them have never even been in one.

    • -1

Sure.. if you want the fit and finish of a 5 year old korean car, go ahead

      • +1

This is exactly the type of crap he’s talking about. The fit an finish of a Tesla is miles ahead of any Korean cars, it’s just that every keyboard warrior will just repeat the same crap over and over. If you compare the interior of the Kona ($69k) and the Model 3 ($73k), the Model 3 is miles ahead. The Kona has hard plastic everywhere, it’s screen looks tacked on and is low quality, the buttons look like afterthoughts, it’s like a car from 10 years ago. The Model 3 has a modern minimalist interior, with a nice slab of wood, large high resolution screen, good quality materials including some of the comfiest seats you can sit in.

Your entire argument is based off a comparison between the Model S and the S class Mercedes, which compete on price in the USA. The Model S interior is inferior to the luxury of the S Class, and people took exception to that. The fact is that a Model S here competes on price with an E class, and a Model S has a better interior than a stock E class. You have to put $20k for a Designo interior on an E class to beat the Model S interior. And that’s subjective anyway. You’re just repeating shit you’ve read despite being ridiculously misinformed.

  • If they care about the badge the most, it's gotta be a BMW or Merc.

A VW Toureg would be very nice though.

  • BMW X1/X3
    Mercedes GLC

But most likely youll need to get the mercedes as the bmw's are always more sporty and i doubt they're like that

Both have far superior interiors now compared to other offerings.

Get the Mercedes GLC, good bargaining will get you one for under $65k with good options.

experience with all. if you want the badge, get the mercedes, just more class and a softer ride vs BMW's.

For a younger person <40 I would recommend BMWs as they are just more fun to drive around.

I haven't had anything major happen with any of these cars, had a water pump leak and mercedes replaced it out of warranty no questions free of charge.

  • Are your parents short? If so make sure they sit in the car and test drive for a while. They might find an SUV too high for them and end up driving their own car.

Also, maybe they'll enjoy experiences more than shallow material/status things. Check with them first.

    • Interesting comment.

I think shorter people prefer SUVs because they are sitting higher so it's easier for them to see.

    Why no range rover?

    • +1

coz most of RR driving, will be to and from the mechanic.. :p

      • -1

Range Rover know how to make comfortable seats and Emirati and Sultan level interiors.

    • +1

Because you can't get a Range Rover anywhere near his budget. And the two cheapest 'Range Rovers' aren't Range Rovers at all. The Evoque is a glorified Freelander (which they renamed a Disco Sport to charge more money for it), and the Velar is a Jag F type with Tesla door handles. A proper Range Rover starts with the Sport, and not the shitty S, it needs to be at least an SE. So ~$130k starting price.

      • Where keyless entry is an ~$1190 option lol

        • Yep, complete rip offs. They even took the rear diff out of the HSE, and you have to option an offroad package to get it put back in (for a huge amount of money). The $220k base model Range Rover Vogue, has way less interior features as a base model BMW 3 series. You need to spend about $250k to get anything decent, and even then it will break down.

  • I'd probably pay up to $5k for a badge and some hot glue and then stick it on a CX-5. The problem with the 'badge' cars isn't just that upfront they mostly come with no options and that to spec them out will blow your budget, it's that you keep paying the badge price for every service and repair.

      • So are 30 other cars on the MQB in the VW portfolio. Dont get what your point is; OP would get $20k change while still fulfilling the criteria of Suv, premium feel, and badge.

I don’t think anyone thinks the Q3 is premium. Most people see it for what it is.

          • @[Deactivated]: Notice how i said premium feel? You telling me someone who’s driven a CRV going into an Audi with various safety features, heated seats, virtual cockpit wont think thats an upgrade? Premium is relative.

  • Look at Lexus RX. Beautifully made and very comfortable. Although you may not be able to buy it brand new in your budget. But then again, it is a Lexus and therefore you can buy used and be sure that it wont break down.

  • Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes GLC200, Audi Q5, BMW X3

But, of course you have already looked at these options.

Parents recently purchased an X3 and were cross shopping all these options
