The Nintendo News Tab on Your Switch Home Screen Has an Article Giving Visibility to Australian and New Zealand Made Games

For those curious about some games on Switch that are Australian made, Nintendo have compiled a small list for account holders in the two aforementioned regions highlighting some of the eshop titles from our local studios.

Also worth noting, House House (developers of Untitled Goose Game) have pledged that "at least 1%" of sales from their game will be going to help indigenous Australians as a part of the "pay the rent" initiative. All the more reason to support our developers!!

I couldn't care less where the games are made from.

Even less reason to support them imo

    • Care to elaborate?

      • If I buy a game, it doesn't matter to me who made it. It would have no influence on my purchasing decision. You could say I support all races equally :D

Paying the rent(giving 1% of our income) is saying that they still own the land and that we owe them. As far as I'm concerned, whether you think we settled or invaded, we owe them absolutely nothing. They get treated like everyone else under Australian law.

Imagine if every other country tried to do this

        • So if someone came into your house, said nobody was there, said you never owned it because you weren't there when they came in as far as they were concerned, everyone else agreed and you therefore were treated as an exile and ignored when claiming your place was stolen, that'd be cool with you then?

@Ninternet: Ridiculous analogy. Here's a much better one.

Let's say China or Japan completely take over Australia tomorrow and establish their law throughout the land. I wouldn't be happy but I'd accept it, especially if they have laws that treat everyone equally. If it happened 200 years before I was even born, then it wouldn't concern me at all.

It's not like throughout history when countries have been taken over they go, "ok we lost the war or settlement, now give us back our land".

If people want to donate to Aboriginal charities, I have no problem with that, but to think that they deserve money from others in perpetuity because they are the same race as the original inhabitants of the land is just absurd.

I'm an Asian immigrant if that makes any difference to you.

            • @ozhunter: One person doesn't speak for an entire nation of people

Nor does blanketing yourself behind the cultural norms of today.

Your analogy is less valid then mine because of your assumption that the indigenous people of Australia had knowledge of modern British law/culture and that they were treated equally upon invasion which is horrendously incorrect.

I don't care where you're from, but if you don't have compassion for your fellow man that's the only real issue.

How am I doing that? Should I follow cultural norms of hundreds of years ago instead?

Whether they knew or not is irrelevant. If China or Japan invaded Australia tomorrow, you think they would listen to our laws?

that they were treated equally upon invasion which is horrendously incorrect.

I put settle or invaded because regardless of how you think things went down, they took over. The only law that was relevant was what the British had established.

But apparently where the makers spend their money does matter?

@johnno07: It does a little. Should it not?

If these guys made Halo, I'd still buy it.

Does it bother you that I'm saying their race isn't an issue?

        • Imagine if every other country tried to do this

That's probably as close as we could get to a utopia, but honestly, you have no idea.

@[Deactivated]: I mean if every group of people tried to get reparations because sometime in history there was a war/settlement/whatever and they got the short end of the stick. Where would it end?

Not like when countries go to war with each, they always go "ok we lost, here's your land back".

Seeing House House post about Pay the Rent after having such a hit was heart warming. I'm glad they are using their visibility for good

It's good that House House are doing this, but the cynical in me sees this as advertising.

I bought Goose Game for $22.50. It's now $30, so 1% is $0.30c, profit is an extra $7.20 including free 'advertising'? I do understand that the first few weeks were launch price, but still.. they were happy to charge the price then, but not now? They could have dropped to $25 and offered 10% ($2.50 per sale) and still be up. Damned if you do, damned if you don't :D

It'd be interesting to see their total sales in the last few weeks to see how much they actually sell (how much is 'at least 1%')? Edit: Looks like they've made 1million sales in the first 3 months.

    Still, support Aussie/NZ devs.

    • Still, support Aussie/NZ devs.

How would that work with games?

Do I just buy the game because an Aussie dev made it?

      • No, but you can focus on on the eShop titles that are, and if it appeals to you, then buy it. For example, I didn't know about Untitled Goose Game until it was mentioned here. It looked OK, plenty of hype here and it was Aussie made so I took the gamble. If it wasn't Aussie made, I would have likely waited until more reviews were out or until it was on special.

How is it 'rent' if it's only a small conditional proportional split of profits? That's not how rent works.
