American Express Platinum Card: 50,000 Bonus Points Per Month with $1500 Spend for First 3 Months ($1450 Fee) @ The High Life

130

Hi everyone! Here's an American Express offer that's only available through a few select Amex partners, including us.

Until 11 February 2020, new American Express Card Members can get up to 150,000 Membership Rewards bonus points with the American Express Platinum Card - that's 50,000 points for each month you spend $1,500 in the first 3 months.

That converts to 75,000 frequent flyer points with almost all partner airlines, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and others.

This is a partner offer and it's not available by going to Amex directly (the bonus there is 80k points), rather, you need to apply via our website.

The Platinum Card is designed for higher income earners who want to enjoy elevated benefits and experiences. The minimum income to qualify is $100,000 p.a.

Key Benefits

This card delivers many lifestyle and travel benefits, including:

  • worldwide airport lounge access: enjoy over 1,200 airport lounges in more than 130 countries, including Virgin Australia lounges, American Express lounges, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and more
  • up to $850 worth of Travel Credits each year: $450 with the Platinum Card and another $400 if you get the free Platinum Reserve companion credit card
  • elite status with major hotel loyalty programs including Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Accor Hotels and others
  • complimentary Accor Plus membership valued at $395 p.a.
  • access to the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program, which provides complimentary benefits at over 1,000 five-star properties worldwide valued at an average of $700 for a two-night stay
  • earn 2.25 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on everyday purchases
  • transfer points to 10 airline partners, including both Qantas and Virgin Australia
  • top-notch travel insurance cover
  • Australian Financial Review Premium Digital subscription valued at $628 per year
  • smartphone screen insurance, with up to $500 available twice a year for screen repairs (with a 10% excess)
  • up to 4 free Additional Cards for family members - they can enjoy some the card benefits in their own right, like elite hotel status, travel insurance, and one Priority Pass membership.

While the $1,450 annual fee is high, the total value of the card benefits is much bigger. In fact, Amex states that the value of the perks is more than triple the card fee.

To be eligible for the bonus points, you must not have held a card issued directly by Amex Australia in the last 18 months.

This deal is available via our website until 11 February 2020.

Happy travels!

This disqualifies most of the OZbargainers

    • +1

sure does for me - just another 4 months to go for me

    • -1

      Yes WTF, downvote this shiz

    • Op: please mark your calendar to bring this offer back in 24 months time! šŸ˜„

  • do Additional card members get the same benefit? or only the one card holder?

    • +2

Additional Card Members get elite status with hotels (except Accor) and travel insurance including when travelling on their own. In practice, they can also access Virgin lounges because you just have to show your card at entry, and additional cards look the same as primary cards. One additional card member can also get full Priority Pass membership.

  • How is this an ozbargain with that astronomical fees

    • +9

Bargains are not the exclusive province of the poor.

    • +4

Agree and 75k velocity points on offer, I've seen cards with more points and a lot less in annual fee

  • Does anyone know what the minimum credit limit on this is?

    • Hi, it's a charge card, so there's no pre-set minimum or maximum limit, but you need to pay the balance off in full each month. If you'd like to pay off purchases over multiple months, you can get the free Platinum Reserve companion credit card and use that instead.

      • thanks - thought I read Platinum Credit Card

So, can I buy Porsche 911 GT3 RS with this card outright?

        • Why would you wanna do that?

        • No, a new card holder will not have a high enough credit pool with Amex.

    • This is a charge card…no set limit

      • +2

Thats what they say - but the reality is there is a limit - they just don't tell you what it is - nearly every month I hit my limit and all they keep telling me is prepay and then my limit will increase gradually. That partly defeats the purpose of having the interest free period for the card though

        • +1

Another thing they don't tell you is that your Amex credit limit is pooled across all your cards. So if you hold an Amex credit card and a charge card, your charge card limit will be your Amex pooled credit limit minus your credit card limit.

Op do you receive any benefits from Amex for referrals? I can't you mention this in your listing….

    • Hi, we're an Amex affiliate partner so we get a commission for approved applications via our site.

    • -1

They probably didn't mention it because it's incredibly obvious - yes.

      • Upfront disclosure is always good…thanks for your input Callum if it was 'incredibly obvious' then I wouldn't have asked hence I asked the OP (not you)

    $1450 Fee

    Wow

    • Which currency ?

  • +7

A charge card does not afford the consumer the same protections as a credit card. I used to have one of these and dumped it for that reason.

  • i prefer citi prestige, higher annual income thou but same benefit and half the annual fee. wishing Amex would reduce its annual fee

    • Is that right though? Citi Prestige gives 0.5 miles per normal $1 spend? Platinum gives 1.1 miles per $1 which is more than double.

This is the reason I got an Amex Explorer because no other visa or master cards can do 1 mile per $1 nowadays (except some specialised velocity or QFF cards).

    • +1

It's comparable to what they charge overseas though. US platinum charge is $550USD/yr but has no travel credit, and instead rebates the $100 cost of applying for expedited airport security (as well as Uber credits each month). Theirs also has no newspaper subscription or Accor membership. The Platinum ICC issued by Amex UK is $450USD/yr but has no travel credit, Uber credits, or rebates (but gives Shangri-La hotel status which is great in Asia, and status matches to Singapore Airlines - neither US nor Australia includes this).

    • Hi, Citi Prestige doesn't have many of the benefits of the Amex Platinum Card, and in fact some were cut just last month. It's worth comparing them again.

    • +1

Actually its even worse. Citi conversion to airline miles other than Velocity is 2.5 pts per mile. So you only get 0.4 miles per $1.

Compared to 1.125 miles per $1 on amex.

I know you can link diners to the city prestige and get 2 pts per $1 but no one accepts diners nowadays.

  • I'd pay $350 a year for an additional card if it meant lounge access and travel insurance. Not sure how you could make this a reality though being a credit product with the ozbargain community. .. wonder if there would be a way to deactivate credit on the additional cards? Are they seperate numbers?

    • For travel insurance you need to pay with the card. Therefore you need the credit.

  • +2

Gold level status is not much in hotels.. you need platinum level for lounge access.
