    99% declined for our churners.

    • +2

Sadly this is the case for AMEX

      • +3

        Yep declined as well

        • +1

Dumb question, but how does AMEX know if someone’s a churner?

          • +1

@alan737: The credit checks done on your profile, would show the number of times a credit card application was made / closed.

You van see this for yourself on Equifax or Wisr.

    • Yep, I'm not surprised this is the case.

Many of the Aussie banks (not that AMEX is one, but it's a broader trend) are becoming quite bloated, and many are wising up to the fact that customer acquisition is not worth splashing money on when the customers they end up getting are not loyal.

It's one of the reasons why NAB and ANZ have always been the most aggressive with credit card sign-on bonuses, and CBA hardly ever had anything. You can guess who currently has the highest personal banking market share.

Banks are moving into an environment where all are starting to look at cutting costs, and the trend is moving towards leaner operations and lower cost to serve.

    • +2

And whats good about $440 annual fee ????????

  • +3

Applied 21 July, declined, before being able to submit evidence of income/assets etc.
    Equifax credit score 'excellent*'

    • Does it affect credit score if the application is declined before the submission of documents?

      • Appears as an "enquiry" so probably yes.

    • Same here! Applied Aug 3 and got the rejection letter. Also had the same credit scroe as yours.

    • Any idea what the income minimum is ?

      • The minimum income used to be 75k but I got approved with just under 60k a few months ago when it was 100,000 bonus. No idea if there's actually a minimum income now

    • How many cards have you gone through this year?

      • CBA cancelled February
        Bankwest cancelled June

        • +5

          Bingo

  • +1

Why Amex is becoming super hard for churners. I got rejected already for couple of times.

    • +24

Because churners don’t make money for them. I think that’s pretty obvious… it sucks though

      • +3

So why haven't they put exclusion periods of say 10 years instead of just 2 then? I always wondered why they allowed churning in the first place. Not complaining at all because I've benefitted greatly but just curious.

        • To get back at churners

        • +1

The exclusion periods are irrelevant because most are churning with other banks. So you might “eligible” but you’re still a churner lol.

    • +2

Yes they did decline me back in 2020 for the plat and I had closed an explorer card 2 years prior! I was pissed and didn’t bother for 5 years. Reapplied for the plat this year and was instantly approved. Credit score is excellent and was excellent in the past as well. I am sure it was declined because I closed it 2 years ago! Wondering whether should I keep my plat going on into 2026? Need to do a cost benefit analysis!

      • Did you have other credit accounts / enquiries on your credit report within that 2 years? Amex won't be solely focussed on your Amex history.

  • FYI its for new American Express Card members only.

    • +4

Unless things have changed, new with Amex just means no Amex in last 18 months.

      • …and 18 months is better than the 24 months time-limit set by St. George, ANZ, etc. now

  • +6

Citi Premier is still 110000 for 8k in 3 months spend though if amex isn't for you. Earning rate isn't that great but not bad for churning

    • And lower annual fee at $300

  • +2

Good luck everyone. May the odds of being approved be in your favour.

  • How long between cancelling then applying should you wait to be considered new again?

    • +9

      18m

      • +2

Don't know why this is getting down voted but 18 months is right

        • +2

I know right? Unless some people think 18m = 18 minutes

          • @Oh Daddy: In regex 18m = 18 minutes whereas 18M = 18 months

      • +1

18 months, but AMEX is notoriously hard on churners so expect to be declined if you've closed an account previously.

        • +1

My wife and I take turns with Amex platinum every 18 months, been okay so far. Our strategy is not to churn on Amex, it's our stable card.

Churn on Citi, virgin, Qantas etc

          • @Oh Daddy: Does that mean you close your account after 18 months of having amex then your wife gets amex for 18, then swap again?

Would be interesting that Amex would approve your card after the 18 months if they see you churning on other cards (e.g. citi, virgin, anz, etc.). How often are you churning?

            • @psj2019: That's right.

Each of us churn 1-2 cards a year. Depending on the offer.

The person who already has the Amex churns more as amex is already active. Eg this year I churned 2 and have active amex. My wife did only 1 churn as she will get amex next year.

  • Applied previously, got approved.
Didnt read the Terms : If you have another Amex you are not eligible for bonus points. I had explorer already :(

    • +2

      🫡

    • applied and got plat charge back in 2018 just two months after closing my gold one, fully aware that I was not eligible for any bonus points.
glad I did instead of waiting for 18 month, as I get to keep the now grandfathered reserve card with extra $400 yearly travel credit.

  • +1

anyone know if corporate card holder qualify for this one?

    • From experience corporate card is treated separately and you should be eligible.

I have one and applied for Explorer last month, checked in with customer service who confirmed I will be eligible for bonus points.

  • +1

I had a amex business rewards qantas card.

Do you reckon i can get bonus points from this personal card ?

    • I have heard yes, business and personal are different. But I would recommend calling amex before you apply

      • -1

I would recommend you use online chat or email them so you have it in writing if they say yes

      • Hold up.. are you saying if i used to have amex business (charge) card, i dont have to wait 18m to be eligible for bonus points from amex personal card?

        • I am not 100% sure, as I said I read someone's comment regarding it. Their business card was under business ABN and personal obviously their name.

          Worth checking with Amex

        • Keen to know the outcome

    • Keen to know as well. Can anyone please confirm with amex?

  • +3

Very good card if you live in Perth. The free return flight to Sydney or Melbourne can be worth $700 easily.

    • Yet Perth isn't an available option from Adelaide. Sad

    • Yeah I'm so annoyed I can't use it for Sydney to Perth, yet Perth people can use it to Sydney. The options out of the east coast, none are really above $440 in value unfortunately

  • +4

Hopefully some more upsized Velocity card offers come through, this is still 30,000 points less than the promo that ended in April.

    • Yup, i got a total of 150000 points then. 120000 from Amex and 30000 from velocity frequent flyer

      • Yeah I took that offer as well was great as an added bonus I did not realise you get 50 status credits after 20 or 25k spend they dropped in my account and I had to figure out how I got them.

  • +1

Would it fly on an 87k income? If it helps, applicant’s partner earns 170k.

    • 87k would def be fine - just make sure on your application you set either $3000 or let Amex decide

      • Not sure if 87k is considered enough

        • i think 75k is the starting point, depends on your expenses and other lines of credit

    • I was approved with 56k income so 87k is fine, there'll be other requirements they look for

  • +3

    Just sharing my experience here.

After having held Amex cards previously and then being rejected multiple times, my last Amex application was approved.

The only thing that I did different was to set the option to let Amex decide on the credit limit (instead of me choosing the least amount).

No idea if that was the key difference but seemed to work.

    • Interesting, I may have to try this. Been insta-declined a handful of times previously.

    • Unlikely

    • I just tried this, received the 5-10 business days message :(

  • -5

100,000 VFF points could be worth $400, and this card's annual fee is $440 , so it's not like previous deals where the annual fee had been lower, but all the credit cards are upping their annual fees now and devaluing their points too.

    • +9

100k vff pts should at least worth 1k if you use them to redeem flights.. if you redeem them for 400 then you redeem them 'wrong'

      • +4

Sorry, i did the wrong maths on it.
        My mistake.

You're right about the flight "value", because I redeem the VFF points for flights every now & then.

I did my calculations around "statement credits", where you can exchange AMEX points for cash credit on your credit card statement.

      • 100k vff shiuld be worth atleast 3-5k if used correctly kn a business class jnternational flight

        • Please expand - i think there used to a thread on maximizing vff points. New to FF points

          • +1

@Manny1: BNE to Singapore on business class is 74k velocity points plus $294.

If you buy the same ticket cash it's about 3k.

    • -2

Im with you , i use mine for gift cards , QFF one while on sale are worth 15k points for $100 gift cards , ( 13k if you are lucky) , velocity is $20k points for a $100 gift cards or $500 gift cards worth for 100k points , so not worth it for me.

And before someone chimes in with how these are supposed to be used for "J class upgrades" and "lifetime experience bla bla bla " , not interested for a couple of glasses of $50/bottle champagne and a glorified capsule hotel bed . Happy with economy class, where with taxes its not worth it when you factor in the taxes you pay.

      • Spoken like someone who has never flown business.

    • +1

Comes with a free domestic return + year long lounge access for card holder

  • -3

Personally im waiting for 200k bonus pts but it seems quite rare, once a year thing..?

    • Lol good luck.

    • few years ago Bank was offering 300K Qantas points on finance of home loan.. good fixed rate + 300K qantas points that was a good deal… dont see that anymore

  • +7

The best time to apply for a Velocity credit card is when they offer the extra 30k points on top of the credit card signup bonus. The last one was in April, so the next one should come soon.

    • +1

They declined my 30k bonus points in April saying I was ineligible for the offer as per their terms and conditions.
I got 130k points from Amex though.

      • +1

They must have provided a reason for rejection. I applied for a Velocity card in April and received the extra points.

        • +1

After carefully reviewing your request, we regret to inform you that we are unable to fulfill your request. This decision is based on the Terms and Conditions outlined for this promotion, which unfortunately, deem you ineligible – the 30,000 top-up bonus should not be in conjunction with any other offer

This was their reply. Did you get 130k plus 30k bonus points?

  • +1

These naughtyboiis don't offer Amex Centurion Lounge access anymore. Found out the hard way. :(

  • Got rejected back in January when i had NAB and ANZ cards combined $22,000 limit. Cancelled the ANZ ($15,000) in March and applied in April - approved

  • So I assume velocity and qantas are quite similar in points needed to fly between cities in AUS? Feels like Qantas are more expensive now, they jacked their qantas points for flights ie Perth to Melb
cheap ones are via Jetstar only which sucks..

  • Am I considered a new Amex member if I am only an additional cardholder for my wife's amex?

  • Are 100,000 Bonus Velocity Points worth the $440 Annual Fee?

    • +1

      for flights yes

  • +2
    • There are 2 x offers.
One of them is the bonus additional 20,000 VFF points.
To 'activate' this, there is a following condition, in the fine print:

" Must stay opted in to Auto Transfer with ANZ or NAB until 31 March 2026. "

      • The anz and nab you are referring to double point offer,

        • In that link above, the 20K bonus points was offered, but subject to the fine print below, ie. keeping auto-transfer until 31/3/2026.

That link is on the VFF website, with the following disclaimer (below).

          20,000 bonus Points*
That's on top of the individual card offers available from participating partners, which could earn you up to 140,000 bonus Points^ on a personal card - that's almost enough for one return flight to Europe.
^Up to 140,000 Velocity Points based on Westpac Altitude Velocity Black Credit Card

So, this means the 20K bonus points is for any current credit card, but subject to the auto-transfer deadline of 31/3/2026.

Has anyone applied for two credit cards in one day? I got rejected with Amex several months ago and want to apply again, however I also want to apply for a Virgin one.

  • +2

Am about to ditch this card. The annual fee is ridiculous now and booking the complimentary flight is a hassle. Can get better flight deals elsewhere anyway. Only upside was collecting points on purchases but can't pay some bills online with AMEX anyway. Time for change.

Any suggestions for a Velocity Freq Flyer card with lower annual fee? Was looking at the NAB Rewards Platinum Card with Velocity but they are removing complimentary international and domestic travel insurance from May 2026 for this and some other cards.

    • +1

Book a flight and then cancel it. It has to be within the same day or something like that. It was explained at one of the previous amex deals. They refund the amount as credit into the card.

      • Is the cancellation via the website or do you have to call their contract centre?
