    4GB Ram isn't really enough for this… 8GB would be a min.

Isn't enough for what? peoples needs are different to yours..

        Isn't enough for what?

        Dell OptiPlex SFF 9020

      • needs are different to yours..

The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few.

        • +4

          or the one.

      • +5

Browsing with 4GB is just workable (don't open too many tabs!), definitely want 8GB or more nowadays.
Shouldn't be too hard or expensive to upgrade to 8GB yourself

        • If you're just going to use it for browsing, might as well just get a cheap chromebook.

          • +1

@jv: I'm on a cheap Chromie right now and can vouch for that.

          • @jv: That's a terrible idea… For an even cheaper price here, you are getting quite a decent processor with decent storage and a system with a whole bunch of ports.

The level of performance for this price is absolutely unmatched by any Chromebook ;)

        • Don't use Google Chrome that's for sure.

        Isn't enough for Windows 10.

          https://www.windowscentral.com/how-much-ram-does-your-window…

If you use your Windows 10 computer for word processing, checking emails, browsing the internet, and playing Solitaire, you should have no problem using 4GB of RAM. If you are performing all of these activities at once, however, you might experience a dip in performance

I'm not talking about Solitaire — heavy PC gaming at acceptable performance levels requires a substantial amount of RAM. Popular esports titles like DOTA 2, CS:GO, and League of Legends will allow you to get away with 4GB, but other popular titles, like Fallout 4, Witcher 3, and DOOM, will need at least 8GB to run properly

Depends on your usage. 4GB is fine.

          • @R3XNebular:

you should have no problem using 4GB of RAM.

No problem, as long as you are patient and don't open too many tabs and aren't too fussed about how long it takes your computer to start up and shut down.

            • @jv: How does the amount of RAM affect startup and shutdown times?

              • @jackspratt: Having enough RAM capacity to load the entire operating system and all startup programs will improve load times.

            • @jv:

as long as you are patient

too right. In fact, why not configure 24GB SWAP and advertise as “32GB memory”?

    • -2

      so add more

      • +1

That will increase the price by about 40%

        • -2

          no it wont

          • @cozmo: OK, 39.6%

            • +2

@jv: you can buy brand new 8gb ddr3 desktop RAM for 39. If you look for referb even cheaper.

Anyway the 4GB RAM is plenty for a web browsing and word processor box as long as the user don't install too much bloat or have 50+ tabs open looking for the next thing to be offended/furious at or troll.

    • +2

      4GB Ram isn't really enough for this… 8GB would be a min.

That is true for many people.
But this is a used PC, and that is what they had. It is easy enough to add another 4GB. And while you are at it, you probably want an SSD too. Easily done. the price is right, as is.

    • +1

      That's why it's cheap.

      • +1

It's cheap because it's old and they got them for pretty much nothing…

        • Ask 'em if they'll knock $15 off to ship with zero GB of RAM!

        • +2

They get the PCs for nothing but have to pay someone for a week to do an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on a PC with 4GB of ram and a mechanical HDD.

          • +1

@adam-07: They boot off an ISO and enter key. Hand-on, 15 minutes. If boot off PXE, even less.

I have one of these with 8Gb of ram. I just loaded a clean copy of windows 10 upgrading from windows 7. It is now a very a very sluggish machine. All I have open is Firefox and you can’t do anything else. Right click is a two second wait even with nothing running in the background.

      • That doesn't sound right. I had a 9010 with 8Gb of RAM and it wasn't that bad. Do you have an SSD in it? If not, you need one.

        I currently have a 9020 i7 with 16Gb and a 1TB SSD, so should last me for a few more years yet…

      • +1

There could be a few things that could cause that. When the HDD and or CPU is being maxed out by updates, it can do that, but so can things like wireless KB/mouse interference.

There could also be some faulty RAM, or your CPU might have come unstuck with perished thermal compound, and is thermal throttling. You can download free programs to check your memory and temperatures, and task manager shows current HDD and CPU load too.

        Some good places to start.

      • Use the Task Manager and open the Performance tab to find out why it is so sluggish. It is probably the HDD and some background processes slowing everything down, it should run fine with 8gb and a 4570.

    • +1

4GB is enough, no problem. The actual bottleneck in this system is the HDD. A SSD is essential for Windows 10.

  • Ebay says there are only 6 available. Isn't that below the deal limit?

    • Some guy just bought 4

      • +2

        Broden, perhaps?

        • +2

Hope he gets stuck with them.

        • There are lots of cheap ones on Amazon and others. I can't see why you would even try to Broden these.

  • Does this come with a transferable Windows 10 license (eg. is the key included)?

    • Hi, the installed Windows 10 is already activated but the key is not included separately.

      • Ok, thanks.

        • If it isnt an enterprise license then you can unlicense the machine and transfer it to another quite easily.

bought a very similar deal Dell 9020 about a month ago for $185, however it had 120gb SSD and even if it said i5-4570 I received 4590 inside. I upgraded to 2x8gb DDR3 that I had at home now it flies for my purposes - HTPC and browsing. Without the SSD and RAM it would be a very bad machine :)

  • +4

I wouldn't recommend anyone buys this thinking they will use it as a desktop PC. They need an SSD and 8GB of RAM to function as people expect. I use one of these as my main PC but with those upgrades.

    • Agree… with 8Gb and an SSD it's a nice little workstation if you're not using it for gaming.

      • Sad. I wanted to play Minesweeper.

        • Multi player?

  • media center ?

    • do people still use those?

      • Not like this since the NVIDIA Shield came out. Love that thing, and it uses so little power compared to all my previous HTPC solutions. It's smaller, silent, cheaper than a (good) HTPC configuration, and idiot proof for housemate's and guests. The thought of looking at that OptiPlex case next to my TV makes me feel sick, hahaha. I'd probably add a NAS (or NUC+NAS) if I really required anything more than a Shield and USB drive for media centre. Raspberry Pi for other little things.

  • How many SATA ports?

    • 3.

      • Are you planning to use this with freenas? I wonder the same.

  • +14

for $34 more can get 8GB and SSD drive. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/223870165739

Better also factor in a replacement PSU as the Dell units typically last 5-6 years before needing replacement.

We used ~300 of this family (going back a few generations), so have decent Idea of failure rates.

    • They don't brave storms or RCD trip well either as we learnt when we were commissioning them, but thank goodness they were under warranty.

  • cheap nas box?

    • +2

No, not enough physical space or ports for HDD's, and uses far too much power to be a NAS.

  • +2

Friends don't let friends run Windows 10 on 4GB of RAM.

  • Im purchasing for a new custom Ryzen PC and damn my cooler alone costs $165
