can confirm. it's been dead for like a year or more now.
When this game first came out it was highly entertaining, they released a couple of major updates but the player base dropped right off, probably still some U.S servers that have players but nothing in Australia the last time I checked.
It is not as good as this specifically when it comes to handling and managing the sailing and combat of ships, but I would recommend looking into Holdfast: Nations at War as there is always U.S servers populated with players and the naval maps are very fun.
As OP stated, it's $2.89 so just buy it on the off chance players return and add it to your pile of shame.
Looks interesting but I think I'd rather stick with Sea Of Thieves.
