  • Saw this and prompted by the cheap lobster forum thread and some people preferring crab to lobster.

This is probably because they over provisioned for CNY and now have a lot of crab that's going to go to waste otherwise.

Seafood is about to drop in price due to Chinese export ban right now. Australia is going to be overstocked on seafood for a while.

      • I wouldn't mind that. $200-300/kg eating out was the benchmark due to PRC demand.

    • +2

No. It wasn't over provisioning. It's because there was a rumour floating around on Chinese media that this restaurant was the employer of the Corona victim (Burwood, among the other two in Eastwood and Rhodes) and hence why everyone stopped going to this restaurant. Was never substantiated though if this was the case or not, but it's definitely impacted on their business in order to do deals like this.

  • +3

Another reason is the coronavirus, the chinese are not dining out during this period of time.

    • Not to mention that coronavirus is thought to have originated in a seafood market…

      • +2

i heard a different story, it was from a "wild animal" market, bats, snakes farm rats. they closed the seafood market because of the people inside, not the seafood itself.

      • I think should be more translated as "Live / Fresh Market" since they were selling pretty much everything alive in there including seafood among other terrestrial game animals. It's not weird to see Frogs, Snakes, rodents (racoon like), dogs, cats, crocodiles in there with the more normal meats such as live Chicken and pigs.

I’m just gonna wait for free lobster from Eastwood now.

    • Lol and you will continue to wait…
I've been waiting for B1G1F offer, but nothing so far. Been driving over there every weekend since couple weeks ago and the parking was so empty.

      • Everyone wearing masks invokes fear in the community.

      • I’m just being sarcastic lol

  • How do you eat crab while wearing a face mask?

    • +2

There's another hole at the other end of your body that you can use…

    • just hold it in front of your mask and let the sauce take over the mask, then you know what to do.

    • We don't wear masks, we die like real Australian.

  • +3

They can also throw in a case of Corona Extra for free as well

Umm that place shutdown for 2 weeks. Rumour was that one of the workers had corona virus, the owner said it was a 'voluntary closure'. I aint going near that place.

  • Interesting that they're trying to bring more patrons when they decided to voluntarily close on week nights because of the coronavirus.

    "Dear Customer
Due to the recent event of Coronavirus which is affecting Australia, to protect our customers and our employees’ health, as a precaution we will be closed for two weeks and will take time to do disinfection. We will reopen on 17th of Feb, we will make another announcement if there are any changes.
    Closing dates: 3 Feb 2020 to 16 Feb 2020 (2 weeks)
However, there are already a number of bookings on Saturday and Sunday dinner, we will continue open on these nights and will accept further bookings for these nights only.
Let’s fight this Coronavirus together and wish everyone healthy and well! We apologise for any inconvenience.
    Enquiry: 02 9747 0288
    Royal Treasure Seafood Restaurant"

How can you be closed for two weeks to disinfect a place, but open during the weekends?
Look, I don't agree with some of the jokes being made here, currently going out with a Chinese national, so am not exactly hating on this place, and in fact wanted to book till I saw that on this FB.
If you're going to close to disinfect, better be closed for the entire process.

    • +1

I think they are closed as there is no business, but open on weekends for bookings only so they know how many staff to bring in etc? Even tho they are closed they will still need to pay rent, so …

      • Yeah. They already had prior bookings so they're honouring those - and since they're going to be open, they might as well take more bookings to try and minimise losses.

  • The crab in the picture does not look like a mud crab.

be careful chinese seafood is infected with coronavirus

    • +1

OH seriously? Just shut up. It's racist bullshit like this that's allowing xenophobia to run rampant here.

      • But one of this resteraunts employees HAD CORONAVIRUS. That is in no way a racist comment. Its incredibly irresponsible of then to open for a few days during their self imposed "disinfection". Whats the point in closing for 2 weeks to make sure its safe, but still serving food in the middle of that?

        • +2

its not the seafood , its the people that were in the restaurant, they closed that seafood market in wuhan for 2 reasons, more than 1 person confirmed with coronavirus from that market, so they are closing it down, it is the right thing to do. The second reason are seafood is not the only thing they are selling in that market, as a lot of market does in china.

        • +1

No, it's unconfirmed that they did have it. Also, the person above, stated to be careful of Chinese seafood as a whole that it's infected with Coronavirus, which is just factually incorrect.

          • @he11bent: the only thing that is not confirmed is the virus spread that started(origin) at the seafood market, this is still under investigation, but it is confirmed that there are more than 1 person was infected by the coronavirus in that seafood market.

The person above needs to know lots of tourist and relatives came and visit from china does have the chance to infect others, and it is not just from wuhan.

            • @afrowan: Afrowan - My reply was to Vinodra btw.

              • @he11bent: that's ok, i only want to get the true facts out, it has nothing to do with the seafood, if seafood was infected i'm quite sure the gov. already done something about it.

they can be racist all they want, let others to be the judge of that, ozbargain are built from mature adults here.

                • @afrowan: I never said it was the food by the way. I said it was irresponsible for them to be serving food in their disinfection period, its a danger to both their employees and customers.

                  • @Vinodra: then please ignore what i said , but i will leave my comments out here for others to see.

          • -1

@he11bent: Their commemt was not insulting Chinese people in any way. If it wasnt true, why would they close for 2 weeks instead of simply stating that it isnt true. Someone saying to avoid Chinese seafood for the time being is NOT a racist statement. You are trivializing the word. The viris may not spread through food, but are you really going to risk dining at a restaurant during their "disinfection" period?

be careful chinese seafood is infected with coronavirus

This comment to which I was reacting to, is insulting. It doesn't state to watch out for that restaurant's seafood, it simply states that Chinese seafood is infected with coronavirus, which is factually incorrect.

              • @he11bent: As afrowan said, its an uneducated statement, but not a racist statement. Racism is absolutley horrible, but you shouldnt just call everything you don't like racist, unless you want to trivialize the word.

            • +1

@Vinodra: "Someone saying to avoid Chinese seafood for the time being is NOT a racist statement"

i agree but it is not a educated statement either, the coronavirus infects people air-bon and by fluid, that is why a standard surgical mask doesn't work to prevent this virus.

if you done your research, N95 1860/1870+ does the trick, nothing else.

              • @afrowan: I 100% agree with you. Again, I never said it was the food. Thanks for giving me some additional information.

                • @Vinodra: Agreed with you both. Maybe I have a lower tolerance this week hahaha. Taking a Chinese gal out and seeing how others react. It's soo disappointing seeing other people's looks and what not.
I just think we should prolly be more careful how we word things :)

                • -1

                  @Vinodra:

Again, I never said it was the food.

                  Original Statement:

be careful chinese seafood is infected with coronavirus

                  • @bchliu: Key word, I never said that. I am not bargaingeek, so I dont see your point. Please look at a thread you want to respond to properly in the future.

DO NOT eat at this restaurant. The manager and the staff are rude and nasty. The food is only average, theres much better food if youre willing to just venture a bit further out. I have had only unpleasant experiences here. The beef in the rice noodle rolls are also poor quality and you can tell they use cheap mince with lots of tendons and fat inside. The prawn dumplings use shredded prawn most likely frozen packaged dumplings from vietnam.
