    • one thing that bugs me is Windows Home is installed, not Pro - which is licensed for this machine according to Dell? how do I get out of that conundrum

      • When you install Windows 10, it will ask you which version you want. Check the activation from within windows to see if Microsoft knows about the computer. Sometimes Windows will allow upgrade from Home to Pro within the activation screen, otherwise reinstall Windows from scratch (not upgrade) and choose Windows 10 Pro.

Mine came with the wrong Service tag in SupportAssist, but same in BIOS and on label on laptop. When I checked the Dell website, showed the 12 month warranty and delivered with Win10 Pro. So I used the instructions on the Dell website to recover to the Dell factory image https://www.dell.com/support/article/au/en/aubsd1/sln297920/…

Basically download the tool from https://www.dell.com/support/home/drivers/osiso/ and follow the instructions. You need a 16GB USB drive and will wipe the SSD (nice clean Windows install). Mine came up with Win10 Pro and Command|Update now has the correct service tag. So far so good.

          • @2Cheep: Thanks for the tip. I had already done a factory reset, but got the same version of Windows.

This process wipes all out and gets a fresh copy of Windows Pro. I recommend following it to completely clean the laptop.

            • @gorgrond: Can confirm the win 10 installer on a 16gb drive re-installs Pro. There is no indication of this (ie version selection screen or similar) until you are back in Windows.

A short report on my unit (I opted for 7th gen model)

    1. Condition: good. a few scuffs on the lid. would that pass for "mint"? yeah, more or less
    2. Windows 10 Home installed despite the fact that Windows 10 Pro was originally configured according to Dell
    3. Boot log shows a couple boots in September 2019, a few in November, and a couple in February. But that only shows boot since current windows was installed. The BIOS shows ownership date as July 2018 which means there could have been usage before September 19, no way to quantify how much. Ownership date coincides with manufacture date which means that the unit was fired up the day it was manufactured to do some custom setup, there's no way to tell how long was the unit used for before windows got reinstalled.
    4. SupportAssist application initially thought that my laptop had a different service tag, probably indicating that hard drive came from another laptop. After reinstalling SupportAssist it picked up the right service tag from the bottom of the device (matches BIOS, too)
    5. Warranty till 5 Feb 2021, that is there
    6. Otherwise no real complaints, however I reported the Windows issue to the seller, let's see what they come up with

The fact that the SSD came from another device already speaks against the fact that they have been only used once as stated by the seller.

P.S. I also noticed that wireless signal (wifi) drops every now and then, this hasn't happened with other hardware used. Reported to seller.

    • seller promised to send another wifi adaptor and suggested to use key extractor to get winpro key from bios

      • Try this, go to command prompt and type in:-

        wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

        • I ended up just reinstalling windows from scratch. Installed Pro without issues. Who knows what could be on that initial install..

          • @[Deactivated]: According to few googling around, seems after windows 8.1, Windows doesn't supply any COA stickers anyway, keys are hard coded into the BIOS, hence why when you install and activate, it just reads directly from BIOS.

            • @cloudie9: yeah I know that. I just couldn't find another way to get that Windows Home they installed upgraded to Pro again, as the key hsrd coded into BIOS is an OEM one and didn't work for upgrade. reinstalling from scratch worked.

          • @[Deactivated]: I always install Windows from scratch for any PC I buy. Whether new or used, from private or from a business. It gets rid of alot of bloatware and any concerns about backdoors/malware (at least non-Microsoft installed ones).

            • @adam-07: same.

  • I bought the 7th gen and all seems good except the headphone jack isn't working. Checked devices, says working properly. Any ideas I can try?

Return for item not as described…

    • Yes +1 for returning it.

    • contact seller reporting your issue. maybe they will offer replacement that is properly checked to be functioning. is it headphone jack only? playing sound through speakers is fine?

      • thanks. contacted them and it turns out they had installed the wrong drivers so a simple uninstall/re-install. all good now, very happy with purchase.

        • +1

perfect. I am glad it all worked out.

I did a full reinstall on mine, installed as Windows Pro without asking for a key. so far I love it, snappy quiet and pleasant to work with. build is cheap plastic but solid.

the screen is a bit dim and colour reproduction sucks, but for office work it is a great fit.

  • Hi I also bought the 7th gen and added a RAM upgrade. Laptop arrived fine, no issues there, but it appears that the wifi doesn't work at all? I checked network adapters and only ethernet and LTE are shown. I also updated the BIOS, chipset update (these are shown on Dell website as recommended), and the wifi drivers. Still not showing any wifi on the network adapters or devmgmt. Can the seller fix the issue here? Or should I go to Dell for advice?

    • contact seller. I have wifi issues and they promise to send me replacement wifi card

    • @StirfryGourmet Hi Mate

Can you double-check that in the BIOS under wireless that it's enabled?

A bunch of these had the Wifi disabled in the BIOS and it may have been missed.

      I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

    • I can't remember it could be disabled in bios?

      • Double-check both options "Wireless Switch" & "Wireless Device Enable"

        All boxes should be ticked

        https://kbimg.dell.com/library/legacy/kcswisdom/images/kcswi…

If any are bios locked the master PW is bd=Z6bDf!7pC We did remove it on all of them, so I'm sorry if one was missed. With that combination, it was a PITA

        • So the refurb process doesn't involve resetting the BIOS back to factory defaults?

        • yeah I can imagine. I once had to do the same for 30 odd machines and that was a chore

    • If you only updated the wifi drivers, try uninstall. My audio had the wrong driver so simply updating didn't work.

  • Ok got mine as well but when I go into my bios, it’s locked with passwords. So I can’t reboot into usb to reinstall windows. Anyone know what’s their bios passwords is? I’ve contacted seller and awaiting for response.

In terms of the laptop itself, it’s not so bad to be honest. Waiting for it to fully charge and then see what is the battery capacity.

Edit: never mind called in Dell support and they gave me a master password to unlock my bios. All good. Reinstalling windows now.

    • see above rep gave password

      • All good, I actually called in Dell as mentioned. So far, I've run thorough test and everything seems good. Apart from small scuffs on the exterior, but screen is perfect, keyboard and mousepad no issues. Very happy with the purchase honestly with this price. Going to grab 4gb ram from MSY tomorrow.

yeah same. finally something good to start 2020 with, after fires, flood, coronavirus, and freaking harry potter musical

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Just upgraded my memory to 8gb and installed new 1tb HDD. All running very well.

            • @cloudie9: congratulations! yeah a great little machine. I had a 4gb plank and extra ssd lying around, so I am considering investing in a larger battery

  • My i3 7th gen laptop arrived in good working order today, but I'm having trouble reinstalling Windows.

I can bootup with a Windows USB, install the files for setup, but when it restarts, it can't find a bootable drive.

Is there some BIOS or other configuration that needs to be done?

    Thanks!

    • this is strange because you booted fine from drive before. I did exactly the same, reinstalled from USB, and had no such issues. how did you make laptop boot from usb?

      • I used the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a USB, rebooted and hit F12 to boot off the USB.

I managed to get Windows installed again by creating a bootable DVD instead and booting off an external DVD drive. Not sure what the difference was?

        • very odd. I did exactly the same, usb creation tool, f12, when I booted after initial install it showed me a selection screen showing two windows 10 options which confused me. I chose top one and everything was smooth afterwards

  • a little report upgraded battery to 56 Wh, and installed a much better ips panel. pm me for details if interested.

    • Wouldn't that void your warranty? Especially changing the ips panel??

      • no one will ever know. I changed so many panels. I'll just put the old one back if I ever have a warranty issue

anyway it's worth the trouble! mine came with a crappy 220nit panel with colors straight out of 80's TV.

I have a set of personal 15 and 14 inch panels with 300nit brightness, no flicker, and close to 100% sRGB coverage that I put in each laptop I buy. when it's time to sell or pass it on, old panel goes in, my panel goes into the next laptop. easy peasy

        • Source on 100% srgb 15.6 1080p panel?

            @BartholemewH: laptopscreen.com

make sure you buy LP140WF3-SPD2 that's the only high grade model they offer at the moment. it fits the latitude 3490 from this deal like a glove

on the laptopscreen website search for the model above, and from that model's page get fullhd matte option. also put exact model name into order notes otherwise they could still supply a "compatible" panel which might be inferior quality.

wf3-spd2 model is a stellar performer and goes into a number of premium 14 inchers. I wouldn't bother looking for anything superior to it with this CPU

p.s. my bad now I see you asked about 15 inch. in 15 inch department it might be a bit tougher, but chat with the guys at laptopscreen they are normally tech savvy. same info as above applies for 15 inch, but model is older brother of 14 incher: LP156WF6-SPP2

I am afraid they are out of stock on it right now, but try your luck maybe they have something newer?

also you may search around for Samsung panels, they are amazing but they flicker. BOE are also great, but their antireflective coating makes the picture look grainy. not my thing but some people love that. good luck

          • @BartholemewH: by the way make sure that you calibrate any screen you install.
the LP140WF3-SPD2 gives off too warm colours by default

if you go to some photo rental place they might have screen calibrators for rent. I get mine $11 for half day which is more than enough. calibrating profiles for 3 white points takes half an hour at most
