    It says our of stock

    • Fixed :D

  • +3

<resolved by reading the post in its entirity - get the 8130u … >

Clocked at 2.2 to 3.4 GHz, the Core i3-8130U offers a much better single core performance than the Core i3-7130U (2.7 GHz, no Turbo)

    • +1

Definitely want the 8th gen model and definitely want at least 8gb RAM (haven't looked to see whether the upgrade option is cheaper than just buying another stick).

Edit - no it isn't - buy a second 4gb stick off ebay for $20-$30 and add it yourself, these laptops have a free second SODIMM slot. Very tempting to grab one of these to check it out, especially given they have LTE

      • What type of Ram does it run?

        • +1
          • @xyron: How much would this be to do yourself?

            • +1

@Jaz82a: A quick google shows you can grab a 4GB stick for $35 from MWAVE locally. Be even cheaper from ebay/amazon.

              • +2

@railspider: Looks like it needs to be 1x4GB DDR4 2400MHz SODIMM (for 8th Gen processor).
                https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/latitude-14-3490-laptop_owne…
                Doc above also indicates the DIMM configurations are: (1 X 4 GB; 1 x 8 GB; 1 x 16 GB; 2 x 4 GB; 2 x 8 GB; 2 x 16 GB) - may not apply to this model, not sure.

MWAVE or MSY have the same Crucial stick at $35 (model CT4G4SFS824A - I think is the right one). Best price I could see, nothing better on ebay/amazon. Unless anyone else can see a better deal?

                  • @[Deactivated]:

                    • $14.95 for postage & C&C unless you can see a way around that.
                    • @ozhunter68: You're right. Was showing as free delivery until I logged into eBay

                    • +1

@ozhunter68: Yes, there's a few comments stating a stick from ebay/amazon in the $20-$30 range. That seems to be rubbish.
The online retailers (MWAVE/MSY/etc) also have +$10-$15 postage. In the end the +$55 for the RAM upgrade (installed) seems like a pretty good deal.

                • +2

@2Cheep: In case anyone stumbles across this (its now 2 weeks after the deal):
I ended up with the 8th Gen model. I took a punt and bought a single 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM Module. I plugged this in, alongside the 4GB stick, and the machine reports 12GB of RAM. I don't really need the RAM to run in dual channel - this is an office PC, but I do need more than 4GB of RAM. Apparently this CPU supports Intel® Flex Memory Access (https://www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/support/articles/…), lower 4GB of each card works in dual channel, upper 4GB of 8GB stick in single channel.

Don't know how it works, it's just magic. But for +$52 the laptop now has 12GB RAM.

Do these have a backlit KB?

  • Hmmm this or the Latitude e6430u ultrabook with 16gb ram for $299 on [SA] Gumtree? What’s the difference here other than ram size and smaller chassis?

    • +3

3rd Gen verses 7th or 8th Gen CPU architecture.

2013 versus 2018 (important if only for the age of the battery)

      • +2

And warranty. And wifi/LTE. And, likely, wear and tear.

  • Warranty…

    • +1

Yes this has 90 days RTB warranty.

      • 1 year dell.

        • Nice. I didn’t know refurbs still have manufacturers warranty. I didn’t notice it on your eBay site.

        • Hey op does this have a backlit kb? Cheers

        • +6

Will this be provided in writing? How can the buyer be sure the 1yr Dell warranty is included?

        • Where on the listing does it mention a 1 year warranty from DELL ??
AFAIK only Dell refurbished ones sold through DELL factory outlet get that sort of warranties. These don't say manufacturer refurbished, so I take they are seller "refurbished" and they probably don't have any balance of the original warranty left as these could be 2 years old.

  • Can I be the guy that asks what can this system capably do?

    • +15

      No you can’t.

    • +7

Practically it's a spot on simple business laptop. Office, emails, Web. Portable with LTE.

Throw in an extra 4gb of RAM and you'll be good for some more intensive stuff (huge excel workbooks, access, and other heavier programs).

    • +10

what can this system capably do?

Advanced gaming such as minesweeper, tetris, solitaire etc…

      • +11

It also supports next generation gaming such as 3D pinball for Windows.

    • +2

With 4GB of RAM it can "do" everything, but once you start opening multiple web browser tabs, or applications things are going to slow down. With 8GB of RAM it will happily do all standard computing tasks except playing games (well, it will play simple games, or old games, but not new action games).

These are standard corporate laptops, so they're designed to do everything a standard office worker would do.

      • Standard workers don't game at work?

  • Pretty good price for an i3 - and worth it to bump up the ram.

I picked up a dell pentium $299 with 4gb, 128gb ssd and I greatly regret it. The pentium and 4gb ram have rendered the laptop utterly useless including MS office.

    • +2

Yeah 4Gb is a crime and has been for 5 years

    • Yes, you really do need 8gb ram when running Windows 10. It seems a bit pricey when you start upgrading ram though. It would be better if it had 8gb ram and priced accordingly.

  • Perfect for some of those with kids going into BYOL program at school!

    • -2

Many schools required Win 10 Pro.

      • This Business Grade Laptop should come with Win10 Pro.

        • BNEACTTRADER state in their ads when it's Win 10 Pro.

This one states: Windows 10, so likely it will be Windows 10 Home.

          • @jv: The machine licence from Dell would be for 10 Pro, why would BNEACTTRADER buy a new Home licence?

            • @ESEMCE:

why would BNEACTTRADER buy a new Home licence

Why would BNEACTTRADER not advertise it as Win 10 Pro as it is a selling point?

              • +1

                @jv: Cause they forgot…

Worst case, you'd need to upgrade to Win10 pro with the Dell licence.

            • @ESEMCE:

The machine licence from Dell would be for 10 Pro

              Not necessarily.

      • +1

Many schools require Win 10 Pro.

Is this true? I would never install anything else than Win 10 Enterprise for my loved ones.

        • +2

For high school perhaps, but primary schools want Chromebooks with ac wifi.

          • @MuddyClear: Our school needs pro. Being a business laptop it would almost certainly come with pro, I think they just forgot to add it.

  • +1

Hi OP, how's the battery life on these?

    • Pot luck on battery.

Personally I would only buy this if I had EBay plus. If there was a problem I would be RTBing it, and not deal with Dell on warranty - headache.

      • It's a refurb, so not much you can do after the 90 days other than go through Dell.

Anyway, I've found BNEACTTRADER pretty good to deal with when there are any issues…

        • No where on site does it mention 1 year dell warranty…

      • +3

        FYI:
Batteries are tested to work only. We supply a minimum 45min Guarantee

        • +2

Oof and replacement batteries are upwards of $70, with genuine ones directly from Dell being $100.

        • +1

Thanks for being up front, but a battery lasting 45 min idling is just unusable.

  • Why do I get the feeling that people are taking the second RAM chip out of laptops and are are selling them separately on ebay? I find it hard to believe that someone (maybe a business) specified this laptop with only 4GB of ram.

    • +1

I find it hard to believe that someone (maybe a business) specified this laptop with only 4GB of ram.

Some still do it now with new laptops…

    • Um the corporate I work for does this on a regular basis. So many people reply to a few emails and set the computer to run some simple computations and call it a day. Look, the computer is busy crunching so I must be working very hard so please pay big bonuses. And yet the economists at RBA couldn't work out why productivity is so low.

    • +4

Mate very common, especially if all they do is remote access.

Trust me, I see 100's of thousands of machines a year.

      • +1

That surprises me a bit. That is a lot of computers to see each year. If people lookup the Dell service tag/serial number on the Dell website, will they line up with the product being sold?

      • Good point. You don't need much RAM or CPU if all you do is RAS into a powerful workstation.

    • I doubt it. Given how much extra you pay for ram in the upgrade options of any laptop (like triple what its actually worth), reselling it for 1x the real price doesn't make any sense.

  • Don't need but bought. Good bargain, thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one :)

    The 8th gen i3 one.

This deal gets the thumbs up from the Wystri Warrick, and that's saying a lot, the Wystri Warrick hardly ever up votes 'reps'and 'associated' 'deals'!

    • +2

Not sure why all the Negs, thought you were brutally honest and you have a right to "your opinion."

      • +4

I didn't vote either way, but I suspect people find someone talking in 3rd person a little off-putting.

  • +2

Bought a refurbed Surface 3 from these guys and it was damn near perfect condition, thinking about jumping on this one too.

    • +15

thinking about jumping on this one too

Damage caused by jumping might not be covered under warranty.

      • +1

Nah.. all he meant was after jump on this one, he will stick with the Surface 3.

  • Is screen IPS or TF?

    • +2

You mean TN. They're both TFT. It's IPS in any case.

      • +1

I had to Google tf. Thought it was some new technology I was unaware of.

      • Yes, sorry, had a brain fart, meant to say TN.
This is a good deal if they are IPS!

        • I had a look at the specs of the laptop in the eBay link and it says:

          14inch FHD WVA (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare

So it's a WVA panel. I don't know anything about panels but is that good or is IPS better?

          • +1

            @Monty1089: IPS considerably better.

          • +1

            @Monty1089: It's an IPS panel.

            FHD - full high definition
WVA - another way of saying WUXGA - it means 1920x1080 resolution
IPS - in-plane switching - the actual technology the panel uses to display images and colour

            • +1

@Meconium: as far as I know WVA in dellspeak means Wide Viewing Angles, meaning IPS for non-technical folks

  • Shows $349 not $338 and coupon "POOL3" can't be applied. Am I misunderstanding something?

    • Don't use Pay After Delivery?

      • Happens even when using credit card via PayPal. Not pay after delivery. Did POOL3 work for others who successfully bought?

        • 8th gen $349 >>>> $338.xx with code.
          7th gen $319 >>>> $309 with code.

Works for me when I apply code in checkout, but I haven't purchased.

          • @strangeloops66: Bizarre. Wonder if it is something to do with my account or shipping address.

          • +1

@strangeloops66: Interestingly it worked when I signed out and purchased as a guest. First time I'd used POOL3 so it is not due to reaching a limit.

  • Chuck another 4GB RAM in here and you've got quite a usable laptop for only ~$350.

    • +2

i think u'll be surprised how usable it is with only 4gb, since it has a ssd for paging

  • The description for these laptops on their Amazon account says they are ‘11 inch tablets’???
They must have one of those folding screens.

  • Would this run AutoCad? if it doesn't what laptop will do from the second hand market?
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    • No. Something with an i5 and 8gb RAM at least.

    • +2

of course. I first used Autocad on a i386
