The Logitech crayon is on sale at BIG W for $69, down from $129. Note that the JB Hi-Fi normal price is $99.

There is stock in most capital cities, but only via C&C at limited stores.

There is also a price match happening at Officeworks. In-store stock seems to be very limited (non-existent?), but there is the possibility of free delivery as well as C&C at most stores.

Thanks to Price Hipster's price alert for notifying me of the sale as I missed the last few price reductions.

The Crayon has flat sides so it doesn't roll away. For a casual user it is a lower risk purchase, as when on sale it is quite a bit cheaper (although less featured) than the Apple Pencil.

Although BIG W claims it is for the 6th generation iPad, the Crayon also works on the new 7th generation iPad.

The Logitech website states that the Crayon is compatible with all iPads that are a 2018 release or later that are Apple Pencil compatible:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen) - Model Numbers: A1876, A2014, A1895, A1983
  • iPad Pro 11-inch - Model Numbers: A1980, A2013, A1934, A1979
  • iPad (7th gen)
  • iPad (6th gen) - Model Numbers: A1893, A1954
  • iPad Air (3rd gen) - Model Numbers: A2152, A2123, A2153, A2154
  • iPad mini (5th gen) - Model Numbers: A2133, A2124, A2126, A2125

*All iPad models must be updated to iOS 12.2 and above

    Lacks pressure sensitivity.
Apart from that works as per the Apple pencil (though pressure sensitivity is a pretty big feature lacking for art/drawing etc)

I'm still weighing up this v Apple pencil for a kids use though..

My daughter, who draws almost constantly, hasnt used her drawing tablet (15.6 inch monitor type) since I picked a new iPad and Apple Pencil. I had a quick play with it and it really exceeded my expectations.
My recommendation would be to go to JB, if you have one locally, and test out both. I am not much of an Apple lover (read hater normally) and I thought the $179 I paid for the Pencil was just stupid (and carefully rationalised) but on using it and seeing how much she loves it it was well worth the money.
For what its worth I will likely pick up a Crayon as well for when out and about and there is a higher risk of loss.

      • What drawing program does she use?

The list is long - PopJam, ProCreate, ibisPaint, SketchBook seem to be the main ones. She tends to install and remove things quite a bit depending on what she sees others using. It depends a lot on what sort of drawing they do. IIRC ProCreate is really good and SketchBook is amazing for a (I think) free app.

        • Two other good ones are ProCreate and Tayasui Sketches

  • thx OP

  • Just confirm does it work first gen iPad Pro 12.9
Edit: after searching I find out it won’t work

  • Good to keep as a backup for when you lose your apple pencil. Yes, you will eventually lose it.

  • I'm assuming doesn't work on iPad Air 2?

    • No.

  • Need some advice for you guys, I need a cheap pen for general tapping purposes (some mobile games) for my iPad 9.7 (2018). Will anything do? Or is there something specific I should look for - no drawing or anything!

    • Any basic tablet pen will do. These are just a metal stylus with a rubber (ball) tip.

You can find them everywhere. Cheap ones can be found at Red Dot Stores, Reject Shops and similar discount stores. (Not sure what you have over there in VIC 😉)
