Have You Seen 'Parasite'?

The South Korean film co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho. In your opinion, is it deserving of the 200+ accolades it has received?

I have to admit that I was slightly distracted when I saw it ( I was on a date with a pretty girl! 😊) and don't remember it as being anything special. Is it worth a second viewing?

    It was just meh.

No idea what all the fuss is about. I didn't like it at all.

Not enough poll options ;) I thought it was a very good film, but not the best I've seen in years.
Another South Korean film that was really good (but didn't get enough attention) is Burning

    • +1

Haven't seen Burning but I was very impressed with Oldboy.

      • +3

        I recommend the vengeance trilogy:
        Sympathy for Mr vengeance
        Sympathy for lady vengeance
        Oldboy

      • +1

sth korean cinema is fantastic. Oldboy is like pulp fiction. plenty of wonderful films since.

Try: The Host, Wailing, Train to Busan

        • +4

Train to Busan is shit. so many flaws. The moral of the story is to help other people (which is already simple minded in itself) but the main character watched while a bunch of people gets murdered in the train carriage- taking vengence.

        • +1

I liked Rochelle, Rochelle - An erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.

      • Oldboy… (profanity) classic.

      • steven yuen is in the former…the same guy in TWD

      • oldboy is ground breaking. memories of a murder is in that era and also fantastic.

    • +8

Burning (2018) was the best South Korean movie I saw last year and I've seen Parasite.

      • +2

Another vote for Burning. Also if you enjoyed OldBoy I suggest checking out another Korean film called 'I Saw The Devil'.

        • +1

Yeah that's great also one last year called The Gangster The Cop The Devil. South Koreans probably have the best movies coming out internationally.

      • Burning was boring for me.

    • Another decent one is 'A Taxi Driver'.

    • The Wailing is probably one of the best horror films I've seen in some time.

  • +3

It was good.. but there’s plenty of other korean movies (like OldBoy) which are just as good

  • +2

Seen it but not at cinema. But yeah you should watch it again. Its a funny but (typical Korean movies) sad ending.

  • I acquired a 4k rip of it. Saving it for a rainy day, I'm not used to needing to actually look at the screen to follow a movie.

    • +3

Anyone who can follow a movie while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves :p

      • +4

Maybe you should watch Sonic the hedgehog instead. You dont have to worry about the movie and french kiss all the way, groovy baby yeeeah!!

        • Gosh, I wouldn't wish that movie on my worst enemy. Even my kids thought it was bad and they're big fans of Jim Carrey.

          • @[Deactivated]: Presumably you didn’t go in with high hopes :)

            • @try2bhelpful: Movies I have high hopes for, like Bad boys 3, I usually go with my mates. Movies with subtitles… I save for mid-afternoon dates with Miss Mauritius :)

          • @[Deactivated]: Lol if you think it's bad now, you should have seen the trailer before they remodelled Sonic XD or maybe you already have.

Good thing you didn't go to Sonic with a pretty girl anyway, you wouldn't want kids all around while you're trying to kiss her…

        • WITH THOSE TEETH? No thanks.

  • +2

I thought it was really good. Another poll option would help. I still haven't seen the Lighthouse yet but to me it edges out Joker for best movie I've seen in the past year.

Best one in the past five years, or at least the most memorable, would have to Blade Runner 2049.

    • +1

Blade Runner 2049 and Shape of Water were the 2 standouts for me.

      • +7

        Shape of Water

Did they discover in the end the shape of water is dependent on the container it is in?

        • +5

Title was misleading. 'Fish sex' or even 'Free Willy' would have been better suited.

      • The Shape of Water plot sounds pretty out there, I'm going to check it out haha

        • Did you like it?

    • +4

Yeah watched Parasite about 6 months ago and thought it was easily the best movie of the year. Happy it won all the awards. Joker was second best but Joaquin Phoenix had the best performance I've seen in decades. BTW Lighthouse I couldn't watch, it was awful! Turned it off after 20-30 minutes. The directors other movie was my favourite film of 2015 (The Witch) thought this would be on par but its just boring

    • +1

The Lighthouse was fantastic. The best cinematography I've seen in a while.

    • but to me it edges out Joker for best movie I've seen in the past year.

Guess you haven't seen many movies in the past year?

      • Not a crazy amount. What do you suggest?

        • Nothing springs to mind as brilliant this year to be honest. But I found Joker very lacking. Beautifully shot and acted, but the content and narrative were very uninspiring.

  • +4

First half is a really good and engaging dark comedy.

Second half is crazy Korean "what the?" type stuff happening.

Was a very enjoyable to watch at the cinema.

  • +13

We've been hyping dogsh*t movies for years (marvel, sequels, disney). A lot of foreign films have this calibre of enjoyment from story and direction.

  • -5

Not into the whole subtitle thing, it ends up being my focus instead of the actual video :/

    • -2

Would you rather that, or dubbed dialogue instead?

      • +1

Dubbed please. Netflix has some great dubbed titles.

      • -1

        Dubbed for sure

  • Great movie, always gives me hope when a movie genuinely surprises or catches me off guard. Even the wife liked it, while she doesn't mind foreign films rarely do they stand out to her.

  • Soooooooooooooooooo overated. Not that it was a bad movie at all, but to win best picture Oscar is a joke. The Lighthouse was more deserving

    • -3

After Harvey Weinstein, the world of Hollywood will never be the same again. ( Women directors and actress, we have our eyes on you!)

      So what do they* do?

As all good media always does, distraction.

But oh boy what Ricky Gervais did was stupendous. This man has balls.

    • They're both fantastic movies - both would be equally deserving in my opinion.

  • You should! It is the best movie I have seen in years!

I would recommend watching it, great story line. Wouldn't put it in the "best movie I have seen in years category"

  • -5

it was a 65% movie at best.
so boring, and unbelievable moronic storyline.
i was so excited for it i went to the advanced screening, first screening. just trying to be artsy.
    extremely extremely overrated.

but way better than lala land.
    way better.

    • lala land was trash. The Oscar for that was because they should have given it to his previous movie whiplash, which was actually goood

  • +2

I enjoyed Snowpiercer, which was written and directed by Bong Joon Ho.
This was a few years ago though.

Kind of giving ‘Parasite’ a pass ever since it came up on iTunes.

    • Snowpiercer was excellent and if you haven't seen Okja, do yourself a favour and watch it tonight.

This is the only thing I can contribute to this thread as I haven't seen Parasite, but my expectations are high based on his previous work.

  • +2

Did you make the girl pay for the movie and tell her it's just for the irony?

    • She invited me, so she paid to have the pleasure of my company. Isn't that how it work? Why would it be ironic?

  • +1

Funny how OP has other posts concerning his growing family of 4

On a side note good on OP for adopting

    • I am very fond of my little brood of parasites :)

      • It's good to have +ve parasites. 😁

For those who haven't seen it,

Watch it without reading up on it first.

    • +1

I concur. You'll do plenty of reading during the movie so it's best not to read-yourself-out beforehand :)

  • +2

I enjoyed the movie. It's a breath of fresh air from all the superhero stuff that Hollywood keeps pumping out. It seemed to run out of ideas towards the end and got a bit silly.

  • I have to admit that I was slightly distracted when I saw it ( I was on a date with a pretty girl! 😊) and don't remember it as being anything special. Is it worth a second viewing?

    Does Whicket know about this?

    • +1

Wiki aka Miss Mauritius was the pretty girl :)

  • +12

Being an ozbargainer, got hooked in first 5min when family trying to get free wifi

  • +1

I saw the movie before it became a thing and thought it was really well crafted. Have been telling people to see it since.

The trailer popped up in my youtube feed and it's a good trailer… got me hooked and didn't give away anything.

And yeah, don't read up about it before seeing it. I think that was why I loved it so much.

  • +1

    You missed one poll option:
"Thinly Veiled 'I have a girlfriend' Poll".

    • -1

      She's not my girlfriend ;)

      • don't you have a wife already ?

  • +1

I'm probably on the same boat as "It was really great and I enjoyed it but I'm not sure if it deserves an Oscar although I'm not complaining." I say not sure because I'm no movie critic and honestly have no idea about movie techniques etc. But I think I realised a movie isn't just about unexpected twists and turns or how strongly it makes you feel about it, I think that's what a lot of people base their "movie of the year" on, or that's what I kind of do unconciously anyway. Leaving that mindset, I think Parasite is very special and extremely creative, as well as informative and it makes us think, laugh at times, be scared or feel uncomfortable. It might not be the movie that makes us come out of the movie theaters thinking "holy (profanity) what just happened" the most or "omg I've never been entertained from a movie this much in my life", but I think it was an amazing creative piece that is unlike other movies I've seen. So on the enjoyment level, it might not win an Oscar, but in terms of techniques, originality, its overall theme and execution, it probably does deserve an Oscar.

  • +1

Went in not knowing a thing about it (only other option at the time was Sonic) and was blown away.

  • +1

I'm yet to see parasite, it's on my watchlist.

Oldboy is great! I recommend the rest of the vengeance trilogy:

    Sympathy for Mr vengeance
    Sympathy for Lady vengeance
    Oldboy

    • Sympathy for lady vengeance….what a splendid ending.

Western viewer - that's not right, the killer should have equal rights, death is not a solution, it's an illness, the law is justice, he will be only judge by God.

Asian viewer - yeah, what a satisfying ending. 😁

  • It was just ok for me, there are parts that just dragged on and on (near the middle where they just daydreaming and the talk about kim jong un) I can't stand those part. is it worth second viewing? probably if you are a movie buff and want to dig deeper, otherwise it is what it is.

  • +2

Parasite is so so…with the twist.
The rich and poor disparity has always been shown in Asian drama especially Korean. Eg.

CEO of xxx company falls in love with a super poor girl.

I would recommend Man with no name or I saw the devil.
There are alot of interesting Korean movies.

Honestly, I still don't like the ending.

  • it's a good movie. I think it is on par with Hollywood standard, meaning deserved to be nominated.

Is it worth the awards? Movie is art and art is in the eye of beholder.

Why does it wins so many awards then? Momentum, I think. Like when Gagnum style was a major hit and everybody just wanted to be on the it to look cool.

Oscar needs to gain popularity, after being dull the past years. Jump on the bandwagon and Viola! so people give attention to the them again.

  • I am planning to see it but waiting to pick it up cheap though seeing it's a blind buy

  • Brilliant film. Very interesting and engaging story - excellent cinematography and writing. Well deserving the Best Picture victory, but last year was a bumper for film. Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, 1917… All amazing films which could have taken the Best Picture and I would have understood.

  • It was amazing!

  • I saw it with Chinese subtitles. I can't read Chinese.

  • -3

You mean Coronavirus? nah haven't had the pleasure just yet.

  • Overrated film.

  • Where is the option for 'I have yet to see it'

    • +1

That is the ‘back’ button usually on the top left corner of your browser.

      • That is the ‘back’ button

I don't see any. Come up with a better response.

  • +1

    I prefer train to Busan.

        • winnie the virus .. with crown….
