PSA: Google Maps App Now Shows Current Speed

Less and less reason to bother with Waze! With the new update comes a GPS Speed display. So handy if you aren't sure of your speedo's accuracy.

Haven't confirmed if it shows on Android Auto or Carplay yet

That is all

So handy if you aren't sure of your speedo's accuracy.

I don't trust mine at all and set my speed based on my Mi Band.
If my heart rate is too low, I'm not going fast enough *coolshades*

Welcome to about 6 months ago, grandpa

    • Really? I've used it in that time, but only recently had the app update available on Android

  • What happened to the speed/red light camera alerts?

I used to get some, now nothing.

    • I get all the mobile speed camera alerts? You talking about fixed or mobile?

      • Both

I never got that in Google Maps. Only the mobile ones. Wasn't aware it was an available feature?

  • Whew I thought for a minute there it was showing speed limit on the areas like 10 years ago on Nokia maps (and cam warnings too!)…..

Yep speedo has been there for 6 months

  • So handy if you aren't sure of your speedo's accuracy.

    GPS isn't wildly inaccurate still?

Not if you're on straight flat road at a constant speed. It's as accurate as you'll get

    • No.

  • Google Maps has always been my go to, this was a welcomed addition

  • Waze still seems more consistent with the Police and speed camera alerts.

  • I still haven't noticed although apparently it's switched on in the settings. There's incognito mode as well for whatever reason.
You can also press the blue location dot to mark where you've parked.

    • Don't want the miss's figuring out how many times you go to Officeworks to price match.

  • I remember reading that this was a new feature months ago but my google maps didn't seem to have it like Spackbace.

Only after seeing this thread did I dig into the settings and see the speedometer option was switched off.

If it works on AA I may consider switching from Waze

  • Thanks Spackbace, it popped up on mine and disappeared, didn't think much about it until this post.

    Now enabled :D

    Not for iOS

  • Does anyone know about turn/lane preview/guidance?
Google Maps on Android used to have it where if you tapped the top of screen (where the street is written), it would show you which lane you needed to be in for the next turn. This was really handy when sitting in passenger and relaying directions to whoever is driving, especially on freeways where lanes would become turn lanes. Since updating, I can't seem to make it do this now. The turn/lane preview now only seems to come up when you approach the intersection.

    • @mudkipz
My Google maps on auto still has it, and I don't have to tap anything its there all the time saying which lane to use. I have not downloaded the latest version if you're saying its disappeared in that, but if you're saying you lost it ages ago I would say just check your settings as it should be there somewhere.

      • Are you referring to Android Auto?
This is just on my phone. I haven't got Android Auto to compare.
I think I noticed it gone when I updated maybe 8-10 months ago.

        • @mudkipz
Definitely 'Google Maps' app on my phone

  • This feature has been available for some time now - maybe 6 months or more. It also shows some speed traps although not as many as Waze. It doesn't show speed on Android Auto but does show some speed traps from memory.

So handy if you aren't sure of your speedo's accuracy.

As long as Google doesn't get confused with art.

Berlin artist uses handcart full of smartphones to trick Google Maps' traffic algorithm into thinking there is traffic jam

    • Idiot probably caused a traffic jam by walking in the middle of the road.

I don't think it's art, nor do I think the result is surprising.
