These are some seriously good deals from a $ per mile basis…but with the dollar as bad as it is at the moment, I wouldn't want to be going to the US (last time I went in 2013 the dollar was at parity and I was surprised at how expensive some things were, especially taking into account tips and state sales taxes. Petrol was cheap though!)

Of course, but a lot of people need to go - visiting family, friends, etc.

And if you pick the right city (eg Vegas!) it's surprisingly reasonable. San Francisco accommodation less so, even hostels are outrageous :/

Me and my best mate did a U-shaped road trip from top left to top right (and then back through Canada for good measure). Was amazing. You are right, there are some cheaper parts of the US but even with the dollar as weak as it is, those cheaper places will still be surprisingly expensive (Phoenix in the middle of summer was awesome…40+ degrees every day but we stayed in a Hilton resort for something like $50USD per night, and New Mexico was cheap with plenty of beautiful scenery)

        • Yes! I loved Arizona. Did two seasons in Colorado, but Arizona is still my favourite to visit. Grand Canyon, Horsehoe Bend and Meteor Crater (an ex-colleague of mine - their family owns it!). And just great scenery.

    • san franciso is the most expensive city in the world followed by Sydney and then vAncouver. According to my tour guide.

      • to live in? to visit? to buy property?

        • normally what applies to one applies to all of the above.

          • @lostn: Maybe. Take NZ tho. Auckland = similar cost to visit as Chch. But cost of living in Auckland? Almost double for mortgages alone.
