Telstra Prepaid Samsung Galaxy 5 - $99.00 (Save $50.00) - DSE

100

Samsung Galaxy 5 (Prepaid, locked to Telstra) for $99. No recharge voucher purchase required. Available in store and online.

Phone comes with Android 2.1 by default. Download Samsung Kies to upgrade it to Android 2.2.

Compared to Huawei IDEOS U8150, this phone has a better quality screen (better viewing angle), possibly a slightly faster CPU (but only just so slightly), and better build quality. However, the Huawei does have a better wireless (wireless N 150), proximity sensor and a higher resolution camera. Huawei IDEOS U8150 is also cheaper. Both phones have custom firmware available. Galaxy 5 has Swype included (U8150 can installed a special version of Swype), but by having it already included, Swype works properly out of the box when the phone (Galaxy 5) is held horizontally.

This is the cheapest Telstra Android phone with capacitive touchscreen (though there is no multi-touch). However, it is not a phone for gaming and the performance is below iPhone 3G level. It does support NextG and with the official Android 2.2, it does have portable wifi hotspot capability. A decent secondary phone.

  • Seems alright for $99, 600MHz CPU, 2.8" capacitive touch screen. Thanks OP

  • Thanks, can this be unlocked? How?
I'm also looking for a unlock phone under 100$

    • +1

It is possible to pay for the unlock code from some site (don't have the detail, sorry).

Official unlock code from Telstra: Activate the SIM, keep it going for 6 months, then call Telstra CSR to get the unlock code - you need to pay ~$28 (Telstra accept Prepaid credit as one form of payment types). If you know someone who is with Telstra prepaid for more than 6 months… and preferably with excess prepaid credit, he might be able to help you unlock the phone.

Unlock phone for < $100… Huawei IDEOS U8150 + unlock code from DC-Unlock I guess is one option.

+1 to what netsurfer said. I'm pretty sure there are websites where you can pay a small fee to get an unlock code. I recently unlocked my usb modem completely free, all I had to do was enter my IMEI number into a website and they gave me the unlock code and a flash code (for upgrading the software)

OR, preferably you can get an unlocked huawei u8150 for $89 delivered with a free TPU case, screen protector and car charger

  • The IDEOS U8150 doesn't come with a micro sd card by default, but if you buy the $79 deal from Dicksmith, they give you a 4GB one for free (they just grabbed one off their shelf for me).
Was able to unlock mine for $13 through DC-Unlocker. It can also be upgraded to Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) pretty easily.
Still, tempted to get the Samsung Galaxy 5 for the wife. Cause it's got the word 'Galaxy' in it and it sounds cooler :D

    • dse page says a 1gb card is included, not 4gb, are you sure it was 4gb?

  • When you talk about IDEOS, what model are you referring to? "Ideos" is a series, not a specific model - but I assume you refer to the lowest-spec model U1850?

Or, you can buy it for $79 at Dick Smith (with free 4gb sd card included) locked to Virgin. DSE had them, but probably all gone by now (2/8/11). They're being replaced by the "Ideos X1" which looks the same but who knows whether it will have the same open-boot system!

  • This phone's screen is made of Gorilla Glass, which was a big factor in me buying it about 9 months ago at double the price. Virtually unscratchable, but still not bulletproof.

Also, this phone has a version of CyanogenMod available, which is pretty easy to install, as well as various other firmwares (froyo based)
I use Cyanogen, and this phone is overclockable to 700+ mhz (and underclockable, if you need the battery ;)

  • Damn it sucks when there are sub $100 android phones getting custom rom's. I recently got a Huawei Sonic for $188 unlocked, rooted it but still no custom roms/kernels available :(
