Best Modem Available under $200

I am renting a new apartment and looking for a broadband connection and want my own modem/router instead. Hence, What is the best modem that is compatible with the NBN internet connection.
Mostly use for Netflix and online Gaming.
Thanks in advanced!

Netcomm NF18ACV is the bog standard unit provided by most NBN providers and works really well for an apartment. Easily configurable if you change provider too.

    • Agreed. Or pick one up second hand off ebay / gumtree for like $20.

      • If by "like $20" you mean $100, then there's one on eBay for $99 right now.

There is one for $35 on Gumtree, but it doesn't come with a power supply. Otherwise, it looks like about $100 there too, depending on where you are.

Also, the Netcomm NF18ACV looks to me like it's a modem/router/access point.

        • Got a NF18W which is the last version for $15 off Gumtree second hand.

Also picked up a Archer C20 for $20 off Gumtree new.

Even got a D-Link 818L for $10 off Gumtree second hand.

Ebay has a D-Link 506L portable host spot $19.38 here

Some NBN connection technologies do not need a modem, or NBN supplies one. A $200 router is better than a $200 modem router. Are you certain you will need a modem?

    • Some companies are offering their own modem but they are charging for it around $150, now what I was thinking that if I am paying that kind of money why not to buy better one.
The units these days are small enough to be covered with one modem itself so I won't need an explicit router I suppose.

It is your choice and your money. But take a look at this example (prices quoted are not necessarily the cheapest).

        Router — ASUS RT-AC68U $199

        Modem Router — ASUS DSL-AC68U $239

The RT is cheaper, it has more routing features and it is a better router than the DSL.

Highly recommend the Asus models. I run 3 of them.

        • Thanks mate!
          Appreciate the help!

          • @TaurusHead: Neither of the two ASUS models I gave in my example has VoIP ports. Please check features and prices carefully before you commit to buy. You will need an additional "Analogue Telephone Adapter" to connect a landline telephone to the nbn if the router/modem-router has no VoIP port.

The Netcomm NF18ACV has a built-in ATA and two VoIP ports and so you don't need to buy anything else for landline. Check this list of modem-routers for the usual suspects handed out by RSPs.

This is not a concern if you no longer want a landline in your home.

            • @alvian: Yes, you are right I need no landline, just the internet by itself.

  • What type of NBN? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

    • FTTB/FTTC or FTTN

Find out the exact technology on the nbn address checker.

  • Does asus RT do url logging?

    • Yeah.
