    Errr…

Allows simultaneous operation of separate devices all attached to a single USB port

Note: Can NOT work when inserting more than one card

    What am I missing here?

    • With some card readers the different types of cards show up as separate drives, whilst the same type show up as the same drive.

So you can use CF and SD at the same time, but not SD/MiniSD/MicroSD at the same time.

Given that it says that it "Automatically allocates and assigns individual drives for each card slot", I suspect that's how this one works. SD/MiniSD/MicroSD (and probably also XD) will be one drive letter. CF will be another. MemoryStick will be another. etc…

Note: Can NOT work when inserting more than one card

  • Can this read SDXC?

  • 480mbs usb 2.0 intergace speed… correct, we know that, whats the speed of the reader though?

IE i have a couple of readers and max i can get off them is about 12-18 would love one that gets about 40 (i have some nice fast CF cards so the card speed isn't the issue)

    • I use Extreme IV CF cards. You need a card reader that does UDMA which transfers much faster. Lexar make one and possibly others, but they are too bloody expensive for me. I either use my standard card reader and let it take its time, or do it much quicker by plugging camera into computer to transfer at UDMA speeds.

      • yeah exactly, the firewire ones are good, but are still around the 100 dollar mark. been keeping my eye open for a decent cheap reader…
i've found a few use the SATA interface, just not sure how fast they read

i was actually thinking something like this for a cheap reader…
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CF-SATA-HDD-SSD-hard-drive-card-r…

        or this
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Internal-3-5-2-5-SATA-CF-I-II-Car…

however they dont seem to list the read speeds…

        • First one specifically mentions UDMA mode, the second one doesn't. First one looks pretty good, but it's your money lol

I would still prefer an external card reader for transferring to laptop whilst on the road. If you ever find a cheap(ish) external card reader with UDMA please let me know.

        • if you have USB3 this one sounds decent:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-PRETEC-P240-USB3-0-MULTI-CARD…

          review of it here:
          http://www.michaelfurtman.com/Addonics%20eSata%20Pretec%20US…

          about 35 bux landed.

think i want something like this for my PC as it also includes USB 3.0 controllers…
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5-Front-Panel-PCIe-USB-3-0-4Por…

however biggest problem is that they only have USB 2 card readers in them… would be nice if i could find a PCIe USB3+USB card reader that reads CF cards at full speed.
there are cheaper USB 3+USB 2 card readers though… assume this one is USB 2 card reader as well as it has a seperate USB2.0 header for your MOBO…why else would they have that…
bit deceptive though as they sell it as "USB 3.0"!

besides that there are a few other USB 3.0 card readers at a decentish price…

some look dodgy though as they dont list the read speeds on USB 3, only USB2 - which i beleive means that they use a USB 3 interface, but only have a USB2 card reader/controller. (would of assumed they did it all on one chip though)

think ill wait for a decent all in one pcie device though. (USB 3.0, USB 3.0 card reader, PCIe interface)

    • Make sure you've got your units right too. 480Mbps = 60MB/s, and that's the total of both directions, so max USB 2.0 transfer is actually 30MB/s.

It's almost free, don't expect the highest speed possible :)
Thanks! Picked up a USB hub for a few bucks too.

  • Seems it has connection for a laptop hard drive? am i correct?

Your choice of colours here. But knowing ozbargainers, they rather save the 9 cents.

    Sadface…

  • thought this was a smartcard reader (the IC chip one) at quick glance. They should really change the name, since its taken already.

  • These things break on me so often it's not funny anymore. Would rather put $2 in a tip jar at a coffee shop.

    • Well it's plastic, but if you don't drop them they should go alright for a while, unless you use it every day. Maybe get an internal IDE reader for your PC.

      • I've got quite a few card readers and all of them seem to stop working after a while. Not because of the plastic housing, but just simply refusing to read cards inserted.
This does seem to be due to usage of the slot, as opposed to the whole reader, since sometimes some slots work and others don't.

I've bought cheap and moderately priced readers and all seem to have the same issues unfortunately. Have no idea about this one though, since only ~$2, maybe I should give it a shot.

        • Could be that the contacts are dirty? - I use an eraser to clean the card contacts from time to time.

        • Same here, mine die if I leave them plugged into the USB for too long.
Cheap ones though, but it came with the DS m3 card =P

        • Possible that the contacts are dirty, but not on the card (which works fine in the camera). Though this occurs like two weeks after buying it new, so I'm doubting there's that much dust, and I've had some last for a few months before dying. Sometimes shoving it in different ways makes it work.
However, cleaning inside a card reader isn't terribly easy either; I've tried blowing but to no avail.

  • umm , what are the chances of these breaking/corrupting your storage card ?

i know a shitty ebay one managed to somehow corrupt all my data on my sd card :(

  • Thanks, ended up buying from tiny deal. Good timing my current one is stuck in read only after a bit of a SD card snapped off in it.

  • I have one of these. Nothing fancy but they do the job. It's possible to have 2 cards in at the same time and each card would appear as one seperate drive. I was able to transfer files between them (though I rarely have the need to do so).

The one I have is red and black. Bought it 2 years ago for $5.

  • I tried to purchase one and check out using Pay Pal, it just timed out and gave me a HTTP 404 error.

  • This is really bad. I've just received it and it doesnt work with my SD or CF card.

    • Got mine today and it works perfectly using a SDHC card
