    Does it filter COVID-19?

    • +8

I guess this could be considered a legitimate question for a filter in a workplace to try to keep the air clean for example (how effective this would be is another question).

While I could not find COVID-19 specific information, an article from 2017 looking at Coronaviruses with an electron microscope to study its ribonucleoprotein complex shows the virus to be 'particles have a diameter of ~80 nm to 90 nm' (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5326623/).

This Xiaomi filter is designed to trap particles as small as 0.3 microns (equivalent to 300 nanometers). This means that coronaviruses if airborne would not be filtered and the filter would probably need to be 0.07 microns to be effective.

A more effective way to kill viruses in the air is to use UV-C which has its own safety considerations when used at home.

It's frustrating to see your comment at -5 downvotes at the moment when it's valid and important question

    • if there's a virus in the air and it sucks the air in, there's a good chance the virus could land on your clothes on its path in.

I have heard conflicting reports on whether the virus is airborne or only transmitted through droplets.

  • How long these HEPA filter last before requiring change? New one on Xiaomi website is for $79.95.

    • I believe that there's after market ones selling for closer to $50.

My house is less than 15km from one of the larger ongoing fires in Victoria, and this has been amazing. The smoke levels we had at their peak were insane, during which time we were running it 24/7, but this unit did a great job, and is still reporting only very low usage on the filter.

In fact I was so happy with it, I picked up a second one for my wife to take to work (and on weekends would have two units going at either end of the house).

      • Good that it worked for you as you live closer to bushfire area.
I am contemplating if I need it or not as I dont know dust level around my area (Parramatta NSW)

      • Original replacement filter is available for $50 on eBay.

Was a few $'s cheaper before posted here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/520038

      • and is still reporting only very low usage on the filter.

I have heard reports that the meter is inaccurate and stuck on 1 a lot. If this is what you're going on, I wouldn't get too excited just yet. If you can smell the difference in the air, then fair enough.

Mine (is the Pro, but still same same) was used daily for throughout January when Canberra was caked in smoke. The filter has used 4%.

If we lived in that permanently, the filter would last about 2%.

  • How about Pro version please?

    • I got the pro. The pro and 3h use the same filter, so I doubt there is much difference, especially I just leave it on auto and the fan is running very slow.

      • Can this 3h be used for large area? Ie 60m2?

        • I have both as well. We use the 3H in the bedroom while the Pro is in the main living area. There is a substantial size difference between the two. For 60m^2, I would go the Pro model.

  • Is the website down? Site's not loading for me

    • it looks fine from my end. May I know which device are you using. Mobile phone? PC? MAC?

      • All good, looks like I had to disable my VPN briefly

  • Is this a Model 3 or 3H? Your website says 3. Please confirm thanks

    • The description has it has the 3H under the item but not in the title

      • Yes, I saw that. But when I order, what would be shown in my order confirmation will only be what stated in the title. If they send me a 3 then I'll have no recourse. Can the Op update the title to avoid ambiguity? Subsequent to this, I have searched and found the following from another website:

The air purifier which in the CN warehouse is 3(Chinese Version) Chinese Plug with Adapter
The air purifier which in the HK and CZ warehouse is 3H(International Version with EU plug)

So do we know that 3 and 3H are in fact identical with the only difference being the plug? Thanks.

    • It is 3H and we will change the title to correct one

      • Thank you. Will order once changed.

  • Damn, must've just missed it. "This special offer has already ended"
