Apparently toilet paper, hand sanitizer, pasta and rice have become core investment vehicles. Woolworths' change of Return Policy may undermine this strategy.

Open a non-profit organisation to research the virus and help the people.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for someone to start a company making survival pack for people. Like a camping kit with all the essentials for say 2-4 weeks. Maybe a basic kit would have a tent, dry food, water sanitising tablets, bog rolls, cooking and eating utensils, compass/maps +/- GPS and a guide to local camping grounds and how-to's for those who's never been camping. You can obviously choose kits without tents/GPS etc to get the cost down and have kits for 1-6pax

It would be - if you had already set up the business. It takes a long time to set up stuff like this.

      • +1

Most of the stuff would come from China unless you could find stock locally.

    • reselling survival packs for people

    • You forgot "lawyers, guns and money", I guess the gun is to take care of the lawyers;)

    1) Build a bunker and kit it out.
    2) Sell it cheaply as a rental agreement when people need it in a doomsday scenario (say $10,000/pa), say you've built 1000's of them around the country. Make them sign a NDA.
    3) Give them a key fob and tell them they can use it only in emergencies.
    4) Change the lock access
    5) Repeat 2-4 thousands of times
    6) Set up cameras around the bunker
    7) When doomsday happens, get in the bunker and watch 1000's of people all try and get into the bunker.

Alternatively, you could do things others won't. Offer home services to people.

Undercrotches wouldn't be much better :(

    • do you offer the service at the traffic light?

    • Reminds me of an acronym that would always be thrown around when I was younger:

      ABC = A… Bum Cleaner

(I've left out the "A" word because it's not very politically correct!)

  • Pop up corona virus testing station.
someone here was doing temperature and heart rate and blood pressure and charging $40 per person.
I don't think they had the capability to actually sample and send anything to a lab that tests for corona.

Any advantage to getting the virus early, recovering and therefore being immune? (the virus doesn't mutate at the moment like the flu so you won't get it again)

    • It's not an STD

    • If you get the virus early you may be at an advantage.

If there is a very fast infection rate, like in Italy or China for example, the danger is that large numbers of the population are no longer available to simply make society function. If this happens then the health system collapses and you are more likely to die if you contract the disease.

      • +1

I agree - I was thinking that if I get infected and recover then I'll be able to take advantage of travel deals etc at low risk, as well as the fact that services are not strained at the moment. In 3 weeks there will be overloaded services here in Australia and response will be poor.

We should be able to be certified that we have already been infected by the virus and recovered, thus allowing freedom to travel without infecting vulnerable people like the elderly etc.

I was thinking more in terms of the OP's comment though, is there a financial advantage - for instance being able to work for $$ at a hospital for instance as there is no risk of further infection

Being able to work in the service industry? Contract work in public places as right now staff are refusing to work?

IT contracts to service equipment in public places?

        • Well, last month I heard that Wuhan hospitals needed cleaning staff and were willing to pay ridiculously high wages (compared to other cleaning jobs there) for anyone brave enough.

In Australia I don't think people are scared enough to refuse to work though. You'd probably need way more deaths to drive people away from their jobs.

    • I imagine those McDonalds touch screens would be a great place to start your project. :)

    • +1
      • This. There is already an S strain and an L strain.

    • +1

      the advantage would be

      • better care at the moment as the infection rate is lower
      • build the immune system for the coming winter
      • if you catch it a second time later the severity of your symptoms may or may not be milder

      the disadvantage would be

      • you probably don't know if you have a compromised immune system, and getting Covid-19 may actually be deadly
      • evidence shows you can catch it again, the severity is unknown
      • your at the hospital will be severly lacking as you will be there with several hundred if not thousands of others requiring the same care

i'm not a doctor or an expert like most people here I talk a lot of crap

Book a cheap cruise. Bring home a shitload of toilet paper. Sell it.

  • Soap on a rope!

  • The only cryptocurrency that may do well is Bitcoin as one of the main reasons it is speculated on is as a store of value and non correlated asset. It did take a big hit a few days ago so you're probably getting a decent entry pre-halvening anyway. And if things do continue to get worse people will seek out safe haven assets. There are other Cryptocurrencies that may be good buys, but not in any relation to Corona virus.

    • Actually BTC going to fall down the drain with people selling assets to cover losses . Watch this space .

      • We'll see how it plays out, going to be interesting for sure.

  • If you were a plumber mailbox/door knock pensioners and install bidets so they can clean their bums.

Selling toilet paper on eBay seems like a win.

It’s basically a bad flu than leads to some people getting pneumonia, Centrelink is going to be overwhelmed with the amount of people seeking job seeker payments for sure with the amount of lay offs I assume employers will pull

    Sell face masks on trains.

    • Good idea. I saw a lady at Cabramatta selling masks in her shop doorway, she had buyers

  • +2

    Steal toilet paper from work.

  • +1

Make money ethically. I've been in contact with several people who are, or want to, sell masks at mark ups between 20x and 30x. I find this morally reprehensible, even if on the cold hard face of it it's just supply and demand capitalism. 'How much money have you got in your wallet? Well, that should just about cover it love!.'

Reselling for massively inflated prices may become illegal here anyway. eBay USA now has a policy of removing listings, and Japan enacts a new law to prevent profiteering: https://soranews24.com/2020/03/11/japanese-government-enacts…

    • I had pneumonia last year and checked out the price of plain surgical masks. They were $5 for one, in Chemist Warehouse. Online, I bought a bag of 50 at 18 cents each.
So normal retail markup is about 25x.

      • This is a good point. Products are already marked up like crazy, even up to 400% of their cost price.

Prices have always been set by supply and demand. How people can't accept this is beyond me. You don't see companies having a whinge and forcing the government to sue the market if people suddenly don't have a need for their product and stop buying it.

  • Besides the obvious hoarding products people are spending more time at home so any product that provides entertainment without leaving the safety of your home is getting a huge surge in sales . Figure it out 🧐

  • Bidets

  • Rob businesses instead of homes as most homes will soon have people in them. Cough while on security camera.

  • delivery services; online alternatives

  • Be creative, design something funny and quirky about this virus and put it on redbubble.

I read 80% or something of redubble sales are due to fades and fashion of the day, this virus is clearly the most googled word right now.

  • Buy & hold shares of good companies after the panic sells, or make trades on the crazy up/down swings.

  • if you can start a company manufacturing face mask (and other face protection) in the next 2-3 months, that would be great

Start up a business where you offer to look after someone’s pet if they get sick.

I got the idea from this site. Apparently it is a piss take, but you never know.

  • Cash for grocery delivery.

    Cash to collect mail.

    Cash to walk dogs.

The higher the risk, the higher the charge.

People will pay you to collect things and do chores that they can’t do because they’re mandatorily isolated.
