Ferrex 2kva Inverter Generator (4 Stroke) $349 @ ALDI

40

In the fresh ALDI catalogue that just dropped in my letterbox (WA). Available from 28 March. The price is great, but no detail about the rated output, only peak output. Has anyone here bought an ALDI generator, what did you think of it?

If it's truly pure sine wave it's a bargain for sure!

      Pure sine wave from that?

You're glass half full for sure.

(It is pure sine wave technology. That modifier is the kicker.)

    Perfect for a pandemic!!

    • Nope. Petrol generators require petrol. That's going to be the first fuel to disappear. In the event of long term chaos, petrol is also the first fuel to spoil.

      • How much petrol a day does it take to power a house? Maybe I should start stocking up on petrol now before it's too late…

        • +2

          petrol evaporates, doesn't store well

          • @perfectlydark: What about those movies where the heroine/ hero stops by a derelict servo and fuels up?…. they aren't… real?!?

        • What about oil for maintenance? and spark plugs? You should defiantly hoard some now.

      • They can’t get rid of the stuff. Next week NQR will be selling Caltex servos for $100.

      • Why would petrol disappear? No one is going to be going anywhere so no one will need petrol

        • Fuel stations require constant refilling. It doesn't take that many days before it runs dry if it isn't refilled.

If you have a few thousand cars running around looking for resources or relocating, people will need to refuel and if chaos descends, people will also take as much as they can carry.

If you do the math, resupply being removed from the equation, how long do you think existing inventory will last?

Australia doesn't have a strategic reserve of petrol. In a SHTF scenario you can't rely on availability.
In the 2011 floods my local police shut down the service station and reserved the fuel and diesel for emergency vehicles only.

  • OP, can you give me a quick run down of the solar panel and battery in the picture. Just some specs and price, thanks.

Folding 160w panel set with a regulator. $169

      • Thanks. What about the battery?

        • +1

          What battery??

          • @Road Warrior: I thought the picture of item below the solar panel is a deep cycle battery with handle ( to go with solar panel maybe ).

            • +2

@ozhunter68: Ah right. Yes there is a battery, its an 80aH AGM job. Also there is a battery box with sockets (USB and std 12v), battery level indicator and external terminals for $49.99

              • @Road Warrior: Nice, just what I need for a friend. How much is the battery, also $49.99 same as the box?

                • +3

@ozhunter68: $199, not that good for the size IMO

                  • @Road Warrior: Oh, so 80aH AGM must be a decent battery with my $49 being wishful thinking/way off lol.

It just looked smallish and I got an Aldi deep cycle for $69 reduced to clear down from $99, but that must be a different tech/quality.

                    • +2

@ozhunter68: That was probably the 38 or 40ah battery you got.

I don't know why battery boxes are so expensive considering what they are (a plastic box with a few sockets, connectors, bit of cable) but the Aldi one is fairly cheap comparatively.

                      • @bamzero: Yeah, I agree. I have just bought my second one last week from that Kogan $20 off voucher deal which brought the price down to $56 delivered which is a bit better, and has usb sockets unlike my older one, just wish I could have got the model with Anderson plugs as well for $10 more, but some glitch with system, so was denied that one lol.

My first one was from Super Cheap Auto also with some 20% off discount, but still around $60 I think and pretty basic.

$40-$50 each to me is a fair price, but like most Tech as soon as they add a newer feature such as USB sockets ( especially type C PD ) or Anderson plugs the price goes up a lot.

@ozhunter68: Got the Aldi one last year. 2x ciggy and 2x USB ports but no Anderson.

Battery level meter is analog, just red orange green LEDs. Would have preferred a digital readout. Might end up replacing with something like this, gain my digital readout and a couple of QC3 ports at the same time, otherwise one of the cheaper options without QC3.

                          • @bamzero: Thanks for info, I did not realize they sell the usb sockets like that one, although I am not surprised because they sell anything and everything if you look in the right places.
