Free Flight Cancellation on Jetstar (6 Months to Book/12 Months to Travel) & Qantas (Voucher) until December 31 2021

4641

Fee Free cancellation in form of a Voucher. If you had a fare you were going to abandon this could be of use. I would expect Virgin Australia Group to follow soon. Still nothing on Status freezes but I would imagine that will be announced in the future

Qantas and Jetstar customers given option to cancel flights and receive travel credit
Applies to customers with existing and new bookings on domestic and international flights

ADVICE FOR CUSTOMERS

Customers should not call the contact centres. Due to high demand, we are experiencing long call wait times.

To access this offer:

Qantas Anyone holding a Qantas ticket for travel before 31 July 2020 can get a flight credit and retain the full value of your booking. You need to do this by 30 April 2020. The flight credit is valid for booking and travel by 31 December 2021. This gives you more than 18 months to plan, rebook and travel.

If you already have a Qantas flight credit issued on or after 31 January 2020, this will also be automatically extended but may take a few weeks to update in our system.

From 9am tomorrow Monday 16 March 2020, Jetstar customers should go to Manage My Booking on Jetstar.com. Please do not call the Jetstar contact centre before that time should you need further assistance.
Voucher Valid: Book within 6 months of issue. Travel within 12 months

**If you have reward point booking, this can be cancelled fee free. If you have booked via a third party site (Aunt Betty etc), please contact these specific companies. I strongly do advise against booking on those sites as in these situations of change (regardless weather, virus) they are difficult to deal with.

*I will add in details for Virgin Australia if they follow tonight or tomorrow morning

Update: Extended further to Dec 2021, thanks dealbot

    • Bad luck.

Could be an oversight or error, not the end of the world as I could live with the voucher under new terms but the fact they've agreed to a full refund and said they were processing the refund is kind of furtive to have sent a voucher but not surprising.

I did read that if they offer a voucher under credit card terms then they can legally contest CC charge-backs from the Banks if a customer submits it.

On Whirlpool, not one person that was promised a refund seems to have said they've actually got it. Time will tell if it's an oversight and/or error as more people promised full refund either get a voucher or refund.

I have my doubts and think it's their legal and financial strategy to mitigate the need to provide cash refunds claiming it's circumstances beyond their control due to government-imposed travel restrictions which limits or impacts consumer rights under ACL i.e legally don't need to provide a refund just a voucher.

Well after a long saga, I eventually got refund.

Had to get them to cancel voucher and admit their finance team mistakenly issue it in lieu of refund. So refund request was resubmitted, only to get delayed further by some paypal refund system issue.

But finally today I got the email from Paypal that refund from Jetstar.

Don't intend to ever use Paypal for a flight again, having learned that there protection rules and policy is lame compared to VISA.

        • Glad you got it sorted mate

Thanks for all of your updates/tips which has assisted many of us on successful refunds, including myself.

          Good to know, thanks!

@sssbp: Thanks. Glad I could help as most people will accept that the credit voucher is the only option - which is what all the airlines would like. They're just acting in their own self-interests and so am I. And it's my money they had (for 8 months in my case), anyway they will get it back again when the time is right.

PS. Re: Paypal - I wouldn't use that method for any future service or event, as they start their protection from the time the payment is made and not when the expected service is due to be supplied. VISA give you 120days from the expected date as protection. So even things like concerts and other future events are limited with Paypal. I will only ever use it for goods now or an immediate service not one that is more than 180days away.

  • ermm guys my booking has disappeared from the qantas booking now… no email, no 'cancelled status'… it's just gone.

    • +1

My booking disappeared too on website. I got an email though, flight departing 17/5. Email said they are working on changes and will confirm asap.

      • Thanks! Makes me feel better. Mine is 19/05.
Did you book directly with Qantas? I'm thinking maybe the third party website got sent the cancellation notice and I'm waiting for the same email from them.
Let me know what the result is!

        • Yep directly with Qantas.

        • I just noticed, if you don't log in to frequent flyers and hit manage booking from main page it works. From there put in your flight ref and surname. Worked for me, shows cancelled flights and asks if I want cancel or refund. No new flight details yet.

  • Still havent received my voucher..

  • Wish they would just give refunds. I am worried about getting a VA voucher as I don't see them lasting much longer. Does anyone know if we have similar protections to Europe in regards with defunct airlines?

  • We bookedd flights and accommodation in Bali via Jetstar.

After a lot of chasing up by Mrs Chumlee, yesterday we got a full refund back on our credit card.

Keep hassling them for a refund.

    • Has it landed on your credit card yet?

      • +1

Yes. Showed up yesterday, 3 working days after they agreed to full refund

        • Did you organise this via live chat?

          • @TomGum: Yes. My wife was on live chat many times needing to deal with different people

    • Im in the same boat but i was told by Jetstar that the accommodation portion is nonrefundable, even if they cancel the flight. Did you come across this issue too? Wondering if there is any point arguing it.

  • I received all my money back , I used this form a few weeks ago. It was for flights cancelled to Perth from Adelaide. Booked in January for April flights-https://tinyurl.com/u54tbtz it was over $1300 so thanks to the poster @odaishisama on page 5, much appreciated.

  • Our family flight (4 passengers) to NZ on March 26 got cancelled.
I managed to call Qantas and requested for a refund a day before.

Today I received a SMS with a link to finalise my refund request.
    I'm given 2 options:
    1) Credit - I wish to store the value of my booking in credit, free of change fees. Flight credit valid until 31 December 2021.
    2) Refund - I wish to obtain a refund now, less cancellation fees applicable to my fare type.

I can't accept credit as this is too much for me to use alone.
With the refund there is a cancellation fee of $150 per person!

Anyone else in the same boat?

Rest assured with the certainty of more time

We are giving you the chance to revisit your fare conditions and reconfirm your request by 30 April 2020.

Review the Cancellation Fees that may apply to your fare type, depending on your departure and arrival port.

Alternatively, you can choose to store your flight in credit to the value of your original booking for use anywhere on our network, with extended validity until 31 December 2021 and no change fees on rebooking. For more information on flight credits, click here.

Upon reviewing the cancellation fees that may apply, make your selection below.

    • That's my understanding of the options. Virtually nobody getting a full cash refund. If you originally booked a fare that says that to cancel you would have to pay $150 or $200 (most cheaper fares do say that), then that's what you will have to pay if you want cash back instead of accepting a credit. Doesn't matter that they are cancelling the flights and not you as this is a force majeure situation not covered by standard terms and conditions and usual laws.

    • I haven't taken any action to accept credit or refund.
I received an email confirmation yesterday for a full refund.

  • I don't know if I was lucky last night, apart from 5 hours on hold, but my Qantas refund was easy. Points and pay booking. She asked for booking reference, confirmed my name and asked how she could help. I said since flight cancelled I'd like a full refund. She said hold the line while she checked details. 3 minutes later I had full refund (full points and cash). Was told to expect payment in up to 28 days.

apart from 5 hours on hold

You deserve to be refunded after that.

They converted one of my upcoming trips (still a few weeks away) into a credit voucher, though I hadn't initiated anything. Having already been on hold numerous hours in previous weeks without getting through, don't think I can be bothered again. The voucher doesn't really bother me.

    • If anyone still interested, just received email this morning confirming refund, almost bang on 28 days.

I requested a refund from Jetstar on the 1st of April. Approved, apparently 3-5 business days. Then went to 15 business days. Now they're telling me they're overwhelmed and I just have to wait - but rest assured I'm in the queue!

        • Oh no. I'll hold my breath Qantas are better ;)

        • I'm in the same boat.

          • @Gorzy: How long you been waiting?

            • @BOGLOAD: Over a month. I requested a refund on 25 March.

        • My qantas refund hit credit card yesterday. Points back in FF account too

I have a trip to Japan coming up in June and Jetstar have given me until the 30th April to decide if I want a credit voucher. What's the likelihood they will refund me?

I am still keen to go, but who knows where we will be in another months time with flight restrictions/quarantine.

  • I have a Jetstar o/s trip booked for 8-16 June 2020, flights are not yet cancelled hence i am only eligible for a credit note. I have noticed flights until the end of May flights have been cancelled. Does anyone know how soon Jetstar have been cancelling their upcoming flights o/s. I am considering holding off actioning the credit note until the deadline of 30/4 to see if they cancel the flights and then i can get a refund

    • +1

My bet is that they will only cancel flights after the 30th April deadline. They would rather issue credit note than refunds. I don't know where I would stand if I didn't take the credit note and just wanted for the flight to be cancelled, assume this would result in a refund but who knows?

  • Just popped on the Qanats website and it is still quoting fares for June. What's going on? Isn't international travel banned until further notice????

    • same as Jetstar. I had no other choice but to request a credit voucher.

  • Anyone tried getting a voucher recently? Got a voucher and expiry is now until 2021, not the 6 months previously advertised.

However, sad to say you have to use the voucher in one go.

    • yes 12 months expiry and to be used in one go. I had 3 people booked on my ticket and its very unlikely we will all travel together in the next 12months. Absolute scam Jetstar

From the latest QFF email ("Important update for our customers"):-

QANTAS FLIGHT CREDITS CAN BE USED ON MULTIPLE BOOKINGS

Following customer feedback, our team has been working hard to improve the conditions on our flight credits. Due to coronavirus, many of our customers now hold a flight credit. If your original booking was made prior to 30 April 2020, and you were due to travel on a Qantas flight between 31 January 2020 - 30 September 2020, your flight credit can be used across multiple future bookings. This will be updated in our system from June 2020. We have also extended the expiry date, with any existing unused credits issued after 1 January 2019, now valid until 31 December 2021, giving our customers more time, flexibility and choice. For more information click here.

    • lets see if Jetstar follow suit.

  • My experience:

    24/03/2020 Refund requested
    27/03/2020 Refund request approved
08/04/2020 First delay in processing refund e-mail received
17/04/2020 Second delay in processing refund e-mail received
22/04/2020 Third delay in processing refund e-mail received
    08/05/2020 Refund transferred

    So 45 days.

This was for a booking paid for via POLi transfer (to avoid credit card fees).
