    sounds like cheap holiday

    • Note that for the time it takes to queue up and lod the ferry etc. you can catch a flight and reach home in Melbourne.

As a cruise experience is ok

  • +2

May 1st is in 3 days. You may need to edit the counter in the title from 27 days.

  • +9

    Tasmania is warm climate yeh?

    • +36

Tropics mate. Pack your singlets, shorts, and thongs.

    • +18

Yeah best time to visit is August. Nice and warm weather.

      • +7

LOL, hopefully no one is going to fall for your comment.

      • +17

Most places are over crowded, that's the only problem. But the wonderful weather more than makes up for that.

Also they wouldn't need a car as everything is walking distance, and for that odd long trip which is too much to walk and too little to hire a car for, the public transport there is top notch, easily beats European cities.

        • -5

Lol Are you seriously saying Tassie has top notch public transport? They don't even have a metro line in the city.

        • Over crowded? What public transport?

        • -1

Are you talking about Tassie in Australia??

          You couldn’t be more incorrect!!!

        • +14

I feel like most people missed your sarcasm but I got a laugh out of your comment

    • It's funny they don't mention the weather. Hopefully it's not crowded.

  • +2

Have been thinking about doing this drive down from Sydney.
How much does the car cost normally?
    Best season to go?

    How dog friendly is Tasmania?

    • +5

Depends what you want to do of course but a lot of the great natural attractions are in national parks/state reserve where dogs aren't welcome.

    • +6

With your username I would have thought you knew the map of Tasmania well ;)

    • +3

We did it July last year but left the dog in Sydney, which was probably the right call - as someone else said a lot of the attractions are in national park areas. From memory I think the ferry was about $1200 return for 3 of us with the car.

EDIT: Should probably add that we booked a cabin, which I guess makes a decent difference. Though as its an overnight crossing and I had the kids with me, I'm not sure i'd want to do it without one.

      • +1

Thank you! I’m thinking the dog at home would be the right call.
A cabin over night for the kids as well.

        Was July very cold?

I did a rough checkout and looks to be $800 return for 2 adults and 2 under 3. With a cabin both way.

        • +3

Tasmania is cold. Make no mistake about that.

Still, Cradle Mountain during the winter with the snow everywhere is magical and I highly recommend doing it. We don't get snow everywhere during the winter, it's normally just cold and wet but if you go to some of the mountain national parks you're in for a treat

      • +13

I did the roundtrip on Sprit last August. Booked a pothole cabin for the onward part but recliner for the return journey, both overnight crossings. I would say I preferred the recliner over the cabin with proper bedding. I booked the cabin only because of all the bad reviews for the recliners online. The cabins were booked out for the return journey so I had no choice but book the recliner option which was free.

While the cabin I booked came with bunk beds and an ensuite, the good things about it stops there. The cabin was extremely small (smaller than a Japanese hotel room) for the $180 a night price tag. The ship makes constant noise (being old) and vibrates a lot which is more noticeable in small enclosed space like a cabin compared to the recliner lounge. The bed lights are right on your face, so you can't keep them on while sleeping and the main lights were too bright. Had to sleep with all lights off, although we got used to the darkness quickly.

On the other hand, the recliners were surprisingly comfortable. They go almost flat unlike the aeroplane or coach seats. They come with a bedsheet to keep you warm if the Aircon is too cold for you. And if you are lucky like us and get the first row seats you will have the ocean view with large windows compared to the pothole window view of a cabin. The cons are you might find people who has no regard for other people's sleep and keep talking all night. In our case there was a dude trying to hit on a Spanish tourist girl all night trying to make small talk offering help to show her Melbourne etc. However, it was easily fixed with a pair of earphones.

With the cabins you get to take a hot shower in the morning before you disembark. However, if you could just go to the cabins once the disembarkation starts you might find a cabin open with unused towels you could use. They disembark people in batches depending on the level their cars of parked or if they are just walk-ins (brought no vehicle). They ask us to leave the cabin doors open while leaving, so you can be sure whoever was using the cabin has already left.

While the Spirit of Tasmania wouldn't be my first choice, I wouldn't hesitate to take the cruise one more time if it's cheaper than the flight tickets at the time of booking and if I am going for a week or more and it's cheaper to bring my own car.

        • But you were a spirited traveller. That's the main thing.

        • +6

"if you could just go to the cabins once the disembarkation starts you might find a cabin open with unused towels you could use"

this guy is a true ozbargainer!

        • +3

By the way, it's PORThole, not POThole. Potholes are things on the road you drive over. I only say this because you made the same mistake twice.

Also, "The bed lights are right on your face, so you can't keep them on while sleeping" - why in the world would you want lights on while you're sleeping?

    1 May 2025 to 31 Qctober 2025

    Brrr… Lousy Qctober weather

  • +9

TAS has pretty much entered low season now. If you're taking your car over and planning to go alpine areas, check your car insurance policies that you're covered for snow and also keep in mind that you'll need to get chains put on in the colder months where snow is present.

    • +8

You might be thinking of rental companies and driving above the snow line wrt. to insurance.

I've never heard of normal insurance not covering your own car driving in somewhere that might snow.

      • +1

Still worth checking. A lot of these companies that offer multiple choices on insurance in order to tailor the policy have some weird exclusions. For example, if you live in Broome it would be ridiculous to cover yourself for snow-related incidents.

  • +2

Nice. Can sleep in my car

    • +4

Not on the boat you can’t.

You probably could once you get off the boat - might be a bit chilly, but..

  • -3

In the earlier months return price is higher with $0 recliner, in the later months' price is lower, but it is levelled to early months' with $39 recliner. Cannot sleep in the vehicle, not sure if it is now allowed.
and what will do in cold winter in Tassie? Can't find even birds outside. Been there in 'their hot summer' still was freezing.

    • +6

Huh? There are… lots of birds around. They don’t leave. The wildlife density here is off the charts. And summer isn’t cold, it’s just mild.

  • Bugger, I booked a trip last month.
Anyone know what their 'Birthday Special' is..?

    • +1

If you join their “sailor’s club” (sign up is free), the birthday discount is up to 25% for bookings made in your birthday month for future travel.

      • -1

Ah ok thanks..I am a member of the sailers club and there was no birthday discount applied.
Looks like the send an email on the first day of your birthday month… To book a discounted fare during that month.

Pretty useless as there is no time to plan or secure a fare with such a small timeframe.

        • +4

You can book advance travel dates that are not within your birthday month. For example if your birthday month is June and you want to travel in December you can book those dates and the discount is applied.

  • +5

It'll be interesting to see how this affects the used car market in Tasmania.

    • +2

      Why would it?

      • +1

Have you seen the used car market in Tasmania…

        • +2

          No.

          • +1

            @MrZ: I respect your honesty.

      • -5

Take an hour to think about it and get back to us when you find your answer.

        • +1

Why would I need an hour?

      • Totally agree out of all the cars going to Tassie very very few will be sold.

There is not a great enough ferry capacity or time to make a impact on the second hand car market. Some Tasmanians may take advantage of it but it will mostly be backbackers that plan to leave soon after and those cars are usually pretty ordinary condition. Often they are just dumped. Happens in Gippsland, Victoria all the time they dump them hop on a train to Melbourne go Tullamarine Airport and they have had their holiday. These cars often are impounded then come up for auction at local Councils. Most are not worth anything and the local scrap metal company buys them.

    • +6

I was literally thinking this. So I fly to Melbourne, buy a decent priced used car then put it in the boat back to Tas for free… Time to book my ticket.

      • +2

Arrange for someone else from ozbargain to offload at destination.

      • +2

God, what's happened to Tassie that y'all think we have decent priced cars?

In my day it was the other way around, you'd wanna buy a bomb in Tas on the side of the road, not worry about a roady, and then bring it back here legally.

  • +1

    Be a spirited traveller

  • +2

Book the overnight sail over the day sail. You eat on board, go to sleep, wake up and drive off vs sitting on your arse for ten hours.

    • Depends whether you are getting a bed i guess.
I prefer daytime flights over overnights ones because I can’t sleep on a seat and it takes me a few days of sleeping at random hours to recover.

  • +2

So what's the actual price with this deal?

Might finally be worth bringing your own vehicle over instead of renting for a change?

So cheapest return for 2 adults is $178 each way, so $356 return including the vehicle.

Considering flights can be had for circa $100-150 return per person, it's actually quite a good deal.

  • Exactly my thoughts too

  • Good deal, but for me personally, think I'd rather pickup a couple cheap ~50ish flights and put the couple hundred saved against the boat into a rental car.

Definitely a good deal if you were going for more than a week or so, then there's no comparison

  • Question about the boat, under ship facts: https://newships.spiritoftasmania.com.au/ship-facts/ it says it has a capacity of 1800, with 303 rooms, 118 standard recliners and 47 business recliners. How does that add up to 1800 people? I figured they'd have a lot more than 165 recliners??

    • The remaining sleeps in their car.

    • +1

Lots of non-reclining seats? See here - https://newships.spiritoftasmania.com.au/visual-library/

      • Pretty sure that all the seats are recliners? Why wouldn't they be, it's not like they don't have the space.

        • I guess you didn't click the link and open the pictures…

'Because they don't need to be and they charge a premium for the recliners' would be the answer…

    • +2

A lot of those rooms sleep 4

      • Even if 303 rooms slept 4 each, that's 1212 people, plus another 165 in the recliners. Where do the remaining 423 people go?

    • +2

You’re not supposed to sleep in the lounge areas but plenty of people flake out on the bench seats or the floor and do just that. (Or, wander around like zombies for a few hours.) If you’re travelling in a party then spread the cost and book a 4-berth inside cabin (i.e. no porthole window), that way you’ll have your own toilet to use, you’ll be able to have a kip in relative comfort, and you can freshen up with a shower if you’re so inclined. It’s well worth cost.

  • If you have a look at the website, the prices are good, but you've got Buckley's of getting a car into Tasmania in October, especially if you have a high roof or want to tow something.

  • Just booked a week ago for a family trip in September. Hopefully can cancel and rebook with no fees.

    • +4

Maybe take a scroll through some of the hilarious negative reviews and make up your own mind. Highlights include outrage over the removal of pokies, beer being poured incorrectly, no free drinks on arrival, and people whinging because they chose terrible seats themselves.

  • saving around ~$350-450 with this deal (car is usually $180-200 each way)

    • also the cost of hiring a car?

  • Shame I don't have a passport

  • -1

Time to bring in some foxes and start that whole circus again. Usually people just load the cars up with drugs and bring them over.

  • Spewit of Tasmania

  • Beware of rough weather!

I once used a Bass Strait ferry. After rough weather, a VW Kombi van was squashed to a one metre long Kombi!

    • I doubt this story's true. Cars didn't have crumple zones back in those days.

  • Is there a lot of snow in early to mid June? A bit apprehensive about have to get and drive with chains.

  • What about the cats! Set them free!

  • wow 1000 return. I can fly to Japan for that.

  • Went to book today. Was advised the offer sold out yesterday. :-(

  • does say above till sold out
