Hi, long time lurker and first time deal poster, as per the 20% digidirect sale currently going on, the SELP18105G has stooped back down to the $550 mark. I definitely recommend pulling the trigger on this if you don't have an entry level Sony E-mount zoom lens as the SELP18105G is an all-rounder great lens if you are shooting on a budget.

APSC lens not the full frame one if you are too lazy to search for it!

I am sure Sony users would understand that E mount (in the title) means it is for their APSC system whereas FE is for full frames.

Agreed. I love my APSC systems. I'm not some wannabe pro-tog who spends $$$ on needless gear only to downgrade in 12months because they don't use it. These systems are great for hobbyists who don't want to spend the world and still get good results.

Nice find op! This price is hard to come by especially for a Sony lens

  • Sony e-mount users, any suggestions on a new lens (maybe including this one)?
My NEX-5's SELP1650 powerzoom lens died (it fell off a table & the camera won't recognise it). Might be fixable, but not sure how / whether it's worth it.

I'm after a lens that does a great job indoors (so low light), does the same for video & ideally good all-rounder (like sightseeing). I already have the SEL55210 55-210mm zoom lens. Main purpose is taking candit photos & vidoes of the kids.

Is this lens good for low light indoor pics, and for videos (indoor) as well? Any better or better value options?

35mm APSC prime by Sony is really amazing and super versatile for a prime. Incredibly sharp, compact, fast at 1.8 and has OSS for video. Could pair well with your zoom.

I've also heard very good thinks about the Sigma 16mm prime but it's much bigger and less compact than the 35mm.

I second this. I have the 35mm f1.8 paired with my A6500 and it's a great lens - very compact, great for low light, and is very usable indoors (e.g. don't have to get miles away from your subject to fit them in frame). Also takes beautiful portraits.

I have a number of lenses, so I can advise.

35mm 1.8 - as mentioned below: yup, very good in low light, way more than your lens that died. The f/1.8 part is aperture, relates to maximum aperture. Your one that died is f/3.5, so this is MUCH better for low light.

The problems with it are that it's locked to 35mm. No zooming. For indoors, might be tricky if you want to say get a family pic with a dinner feast all in the same photo.

This deal lens is a zoom lens that is 18-105mm. Lens that died was 16-50mm, so you have a much bigger zoom range. Low level light performance is very similar, as it's a constant f/4, compared to f/3.5. The thing with your dead lens is, that the aperture reduces to f/5.6 when zoomed to 50mm, whereas this deal lens can stay at f/4 - giving you better low light performance across the full zoom range.

The deal lens is also very good for video, for three reasons: power zoom with slider, allowing smooth zooming; optical stabilisation; constant aperture (it doesnt darken/lighten as you zoom).

For $550, I think this is an excellent deal and likely an excellent lens for you. It would replace your dead lens, provide better zoom range, better light gathering, and also give you higher image quality. The size is the only drawback.

Also mentioned below is a 16mm Sigma f/1.8 - also a highly reviewed lens, and likely an awesome lens for you. It's just locked at the 16m focal length - which is actually a very good length for indoor and family shots, and all-rounder for sightseeing. Size is smaller than this deal lens, but definitely bigger than your dead lens. Cost is also $480-550.

IMO, get this lens. It'll do what you want. As you use it more and become more familiar with photography, you'll gather the knowledge on what other prime (non-zoom) lenses to get, like the 16 or 35mm above.

  • Sony's relatively new 18-135 E lens has been getting good reviews. It's a bit more expensive than this one, for some reason. But it is impressively compact. Even at full zoom, the lens barrel only extends slightly.

  • Very good price good find OP !!
