Wow. Free when no one is flying…

    • They might lift travel ban by June

      • +33

If that happens, I bet the airport cancels this offer.

        • +13

"Due to popular demand, we've had to withdraw this offer early. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope you enjoy flying at Melbourne Airport."

    • +7

Helps the staff a lot though - staff car parking is off site and some companies make their staff pay a daily fee.

      Also people are still travelling.

    • +1

some states are still open for domestic travel. Not that I would recommend it either. There's no distancing possible at an airport. At least normally there isn't. With low demand maybe there will be now.

  • +13

Kinda pointless now that no ones flying anywhere anytime soon.

I'm supposed to be in Japan right now enjoying the cherry blossoms. :(

      • Same here :(
"Where are you" at the moment? I'm currently in Tokyo (my second day), and catching Shinkansen to Kyoto on Friday. Then off to Osaka, Hiroshima and back to Tokyo before flying back to Melbourne…

…instead. just looking at my Konichiwa Japan booklet and unopened 14-day Japan SIM, sitting on my Work From Home desk, next to my hand sanitiser :(

        • ..cheer up, you know things could've been a lot worse - you know, World War Z wise…

and plus, the cheery blossoms will still be there next year.

        • I'm in Melbourne still. We went into a global do not travel advisory days before I was due to leave. A bunch of airlines canceled their flights.

You actually left in spite of the travel restrictions?

Didn't Japan tell people to stay in their homes anyway? Are you still going around? How crowded are the blossom parks?

On the plus side, you get free 5 star lodging for 2 weeks with 3 meals a day on your way back.

  • +2

lol, what is the actual point of this…

    • +3

I think they're hoping for lost ticket fees

  • +12

There'll still be people who are undertaking essential or compassionate air travel. I think this is great.

  • +9

Saves $1000 if you’re picking someone up!

    • Only if you were planning to stay for more than 60 minutes.

  • +5

And free hotels for returning international travellers. Bargain.

    • +1

14 days free at 5 star hotels. Regular people can't afford.

    • -1

a hotel that you can't leave, sure.

      • +2

Hey, a hotel is a hotel.

        • +1

“You can check in anytime you want but you can never leave”. What a song, what a tribute to The Eagles.

  • Thanks for reminding me how expensive airport parking is in regular days :)

  • +2

    sooooooooo generous

  • +6

on par with a free lunch voucher at alfred hospital food court.

    • +1

I have lunch there. Anything I should know about…

  • +1

This is april fool joke right? A bit early though.

  • +2

the parking is free. but it's $20 if you want sanitiser for the trolley.

  • out of work backpackers + free parking + hire a mini bus = $20 per day CBD valet parking service.

*limit 12 customers per half hour.

  • +4

Australia Pacific Airports Corporation made $149.9 million in revenue in the last financial year alone.

Sort of cathartic just knowing the fact that they are bleeding money from lost sales.

    • +1

      what was the profit?

  • Wow. High number of votes for something very few of us are going to use

  • +6

    What an absolute joke!

It's not like Melbourne Airport is anywhere near anything other than industrial area and suburbia. Who in the hell is going to park there and for what reason?
Maybe a handful of nearby workers?

This is not a bargain. This should be in the forums… at best.

60 plus votes??? Come on guys.

  • +2

Shops in the airport still open? Then I may go buy some toilet paper.

    • Nick em from the loo

    • Probably come back with corona too.

  • +3

Oi. Everyone. Calm down. Now, I need to let you know I have something for you. It's free. It's been a much loved format for so many years. Video tapes. Come get your free video tapes. I have Betamax. I have VHS. RIP my inbox. Wonder what will receive the most interest? My incredible offer or this Melbourne Airport f&$&ing parking bull$&it.

  • they must be losing a lot of money giving this for free given how much they normally charge.

  • +3

Thanks OP.. parked there for 3 hours today. Felt great

  • +1

If you have to domestically travel to take kids to custody visits or for a funeral this is a good offer. There are still flights.

  • Only when the economy is at unprecedented once in 100years depths do they provide parking what it's worth.

    Absolute greed.

  • +1

It's similar to offering free flights when all flights are cancelled or grounded.

  • +1

Drift King style in car parking complex. Similar to Fast and Furious 3.

  • if you look at the free date then you can see that we will be stuffed for another few months…that's a worry..

  • Think of all the forgone income.
I feel sorry for Melbourne Airport…

  • Store your boat or caravan for free?

  • Sydney Airport now also free 3 hr parking until May 31.
