Not a bad TV, but the viewing angles kill it especially considering it's an 82 inch people will try to watch it from many angles… no go for me.

    • Agreed, my VA panel 75" in noticeable grey at the extreme sides from about 3m viewing distance.

SA only? Doesn't look like anything in Melbourne

Pretty much. If you can get OLED, get that.

        pick your battles, I guess.

If you have patience to set up a projector, and order the Chinese gear, you can get 120" 4k for under $2000 without needing to paint walls or drill holes for a mounting bracket. Optoma and BenQ models are also great choices if you can figure out what you need.

The amusing Hisense 100" $15k option, you can probably get for $2500 if you can order and wait for shipping, IDK.

But Hisense/ChiQ 75" models are just easier, if/when those sizes are easy to get. And the RU8000 is Perfectly Adequate as a TV. You will miss the flagship / premium options, and notice problems, but it works.

Old stock & Discounts could drop on an 82" Sony / LG of a similar size, Which will look and be better. A Sony X85G or X95G will have IPS and look fantastic at angles, etc.

For Cancelled-AFL or the now-cancelled Tennis and the upcoming delayed Tokyo Olympics for watching non-cancelled Sports content, upscaling 576p and 720p does change between TV sizes and models… because they cut corners on the basic TV models, including upscaling and Motion Processing, which is often tied to the 100 Hz or 200 Hz panel.

        The VA panel is… Ok.

The problem is with sports on FTA, you Want expensive motion processing to avoid smudging, blacks becoming blocky and/or flashing/dancing around, along with doubling/tripling of objects moving onscreen. You can get used to VA, but it's a definite FOMO if you're sensitive to motion blurring and see someone's OLED. Plasma TV owners will Let You Know all about how LCD sucks for Sports.

If you are trying to fill a huge room with a 75" or 82", then yes, a projector might be a cheaper and better option because the price has dropped off for DLP projectors and the 3000 lumen models can handle living rooms when tied to ALR screens.

But, with projectors, the room is a key factor. ALR isn't magic pixie dust.

A rumpus room with a flat wall, you can convert a wall to a fixed fabric, or pull out / motorised screen,

and you can now get really good projectors designed to sit where a soundbar would (Ultra Short Throw), and refurbished 1080p or 4k projectors under $1500. The xiaomi 4k laser UST projectors are… Probably… Something to research if you want a giant TV on a budget. Then Optoma, BenQ and Epson.

You can get ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screens for regular, short-throw and Ultra Short Throw, (The patterns and angles change) which reduces the glare and additive light blending… But it's definitely not cheap. I believe around $690 for 120" or so, up to $2500 just for higher quality screens. Depending on the exchange rate and shipping costs. About 20% more than a regular Projector Screen if you shop around.

It's also slightly more expensive for Ultra Short Throw versions of ALR Screens, which have a kind of sawtooth and/or Fresnel pattern for increasing the gain (brighter contrast in ambient light rooms)

You can get a frame and 3m lengths for a 90" to 120" from Alibaba and other suppliers to DIY, there's also a few Australian distributors too. Motorised ALR screens tend to cost $1500 to $2000, YMMV.

Cheaper here, if you can pickup
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274306455740
Edit: just realised there is no pickup(used to be, but i guess due to lockdown). Still cheaper with postage included.

  • Bought the 82” NU8000 this time last year to watch games of thrones. (Doh!)

Get out of there pissy little 75”.

    Though I think I paid $3600.

    This is a great price.

    • If you watch sport on it - would you mind providing a bit of feedback on how it looks? Cheers

    • God GoT would have looked disgusting on something that size.

      • Yeah the bitrate and compression HBO used for the streaming services was trash. Fitting I suppose given how it turned out.

      • Yep, I was FURIOUS at the night battle episode. Absolutely gutted.

The TV itself, is just a TV.

  • Can you access YouTube using this TV?

    • Oh boy can it?
      It's almost a computer
      Does so much more
      Almost makes Apple TV useless

      • +1

        So it’s a smart TV?

        • Very smart
          Genius TV

    • It will have a smart TV menu called Tizen on the 2019 UHD 8 series Samsung TV's.

You can install apps from their Samsung store, including Netflix, YouTube, iView, Stan, Disney+ and I believe if you update the TV over the internet, Airplay 2 and Apple TV, as well as Kayo sports, etc.

Some apps will be there by default, like Netflix and YouTube, Amazon Prime etc.

  • good for a cinema room. maybe not for a lounge with lots of glaring light and poor viewing angles. sounds quite goo though.

  • Is this micro dimming?

    • No local dimming at all on this one, assuming it's the same as the 65". Went to setup a friend's, with similar settings to my NU8000, and the dimming option just isn't there.
