I've been looking at getting an LED torch for a while and this seems like a reasonable deal particularly for a USB rechargeable torch (note battery not included) and given the AUD is tanking.

This torch gets good reviews online

I know there are plenty of ozbargainer torch afficionados who may be able to comment more authoritatively,

If this thing is normally $100 and pushing 2400lm you're getting seriously ripped off. Even at $50 that's not that great of a deal.

There's a lot more to flashlights than lumens per dollar. BTW these are real lumens not eBay CREE XML T6 TACTICAL FLASHLIGHT 999999 LUMENS lumens.

In this case, this flashlight is a thrower, it has been tested at over 200000 candela which means it can throw the light over a distance just shy of 1 KM

My K1 has even less lumens than this at a "measly" 900 lumens but it has 650000 candela which means it throws light over 1.6 KM away

      • +1

Wow 1.6km, but I would need a telescope to see that far

Good light, not the cheapest it's been but very solid consider current situation. Main things to note is that the driver is not regulated. Here is a graph of the high mode (not max output) to show what I mean (Credit to zeroair.org). As the battery level goes down, so will the output and you won't be able to reach max output when the battery is at half capacity.

It also can't do USB C to USB C charging, only USB A to C.

The 5000k tint is recommended over the 5700k and 6500k options

Thanks Bacons, I’m very much an LED torch novice but appreciate there is some pretty technical stuff to navigate.

      Your input is much appreciated.

  • Don't forget it comes without a battery which I'd about another $30

    • +2

It comes with an adapter to use 18650 cells which are usually about 2 for $17. Here are a pair of good ones I would recommend for $15.78

While the native size for this flashlight is 26650 the format is not as widely used

      • I have about a dozen of these Samsung INR18650-30Q batteries and are really happy with them, good price $15.78 for 2.

      • Panasonic 18650 (marked "NCR…") cost us ~$3.50 (a bit less)

        We're quite happy with T6 torches, @ Au$ 4.95 earlier Today,
        shipped, fr 1 to many.

These prices were from AliExpress, not BangGood.

      • So the only difference between the above Samsung 18650's and a good set of 26650's is capacity, both should be able to hit max lumens?

        • +1

Yes, and price, I think many people would be intimidated by the cost of those at 70% of the price of the flashlight itself.

I recommended 18650 because any device that can use 26650 can also use 18650 but not the other way around.

I suspected that most in need of advice would not wander into 26650 territory but may be inspired by this flashlight and may get into other more generalised flashlights such as a compact EDC light which mostly use 18650s not 26650.

  • Note that a 21700 or 26650 is best for this - 5000mAh. It only pulls ~9A max on turbo, so it doesn’t need a 30T, or even a 40T. Sweet spot for an SST40 is around 7.2A (diminishing returns after that).

SST40 will be greenish on low modes, but cleans up at high. Light can also be flashed with Anduril; I’ve written a custom firmware with ToyKeeper’s guidance.

Damn good thrower for the money though.

    • Some of the [competitions'] torches
      have reportedly melted from heat,
      after being On for long-time.

      Could you get by w/ a ~$5 T6…?
It's cost ~an Order of Magnitude Less

      • If you really want to, but those lights are absolute garbage. If you turn on turbo on this thing, it ramps down with heat so it won't cook.

        • pretty much what's gonna happen when you turn on the new kr4 mule. I can't imagine the amount of heat that thing would put out in such a small host.

          • @Bacons: Good god yes I’m worried about that. TK was showing us the thermal reg of the KR4 before it was released (“secret project” at the time), and it looked good - but 8 emitters, nooooope.

            I’ll stick to my FW3A sw45k.

            • @oweban: Have you seen the Fw4a? :)

              • @Pixie13: Yeah, not my thing though. Head is a bit fat. Got a D4 and D4V2, so I’m covered on the quad side of things. Would go KR4 before that, due to 5A regulated (and removed the pain of the tube/tailcap pcb/driver alignment.

FYI: This light works while connected to usb, also while connected without battery.

  • Can't help myself :(

  • Really good light, not the cheapest it has been but well worth it.

  • thanks op and thanks bacon, got one and the batteries
