Tried a bauhn sounds previously, the version without a Wireless woofer, total rubbish and low quality. Ended with a Samsung soundbar hw-r450 with a wireless woofer which player much better for $183. However I'm no sound expert but doubt the new bauhn sound bar works any better than the previous.

    • How could you get $183 for samsung?

      • +1

I would guess it was from this deal:

        • +3

Deal is no more. Currently it's $249.99

Just goes to show why would you buy this Bauhn when you can get a Samsung at even the $249.99 price?.

          This is severely over priced.

    • +1

Agreed on the Bauhn one, had the one with the wireless sub and the sound was crap. Same as the TV without the sound bar.
Plus it ended up not working after <6 months, sound bar wouldn’t emit sound

      • Exactly same for me. Took back after a month

However that one was like 80 bucks . This is 300 so guess much better

Still, i picked up a second hand Sony HT Ct790 the other day for $150 at a pawn shop
        Super happy with that purchase

    • Where did you get the Samsung in $183 and which model?

    • Got it from either bing Lee or gg oct 2019, 229-20%, sorry eBay grayed out the purchase history so can say for sure.
Model was hw-r450, then I paired it with compatible rear speakers. Worked well for me

    • R450 is a beast for the price. Love mine. Also, if you have a Samsung TV you only need the one remote to control both devices. That was huge for me.

This isn't really a deal, Aldi have been flogging cheap soundbars forever and they're usually crap.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/522791 - this from a few weeks ago would kill it, just hold out for a last year model or a decent sale on a real brand.

  • Surely the vertical sound simulation can't be that convincing

    • +1

You defiantly won't get effect of a helicopter above your head , with a $ 299.00 Aldi sound bar , you'll have to go to your local Hoyts cinema complex for that …….oh I forgot you can't do that anymore.

    • +1

yeah it annoys me how they can slap the atmos name on a 2.1 channel soundbar… it confuses people who don't know any better

For me second tv I bought a yas-108b. Great sound bar for $135. Comparing bauhn to Yamaha, I would vote Yamaha

      • -1

Upvoted you but just found that hilarious haha, Yamaha vs Bauhn for audio equipment… Shouldn't even be a question lmao.

I dunno why people bother with this junk. Poor man buys twice.

        • Does the Yamaha come with external sub? Or does it have inbuilt sub and is that bass great?

      • I got a second hand Yamaha subwoofer and plugged into it, which is much better.

    • You're not getting a sub with that so depends what you're after

    • Yes.

While its true it might 'decode' Atoms soundtracks it can't do much with that information with only two front firing speakers.

    • Yep. Pointless, marketing taking advantage of the ignorant.

  • Is it worth getting a soundbar or just spending the extra $ on a 5.1/7.1.

    • +1

Depends on budget and space, but proper speakers generally 9.9 times out of 10.

    • IMO 5.1 is overkill if you don't have the budget. A 2.1 system should be better than a soundbar if the prices are equal. Soundbar is about convenience and aesthetics, not overall sound quality.

    • If you can fit speakers get speakers, cheaper price (less hipster premium as sound bars are the “in” thing) and less constrained design.
E.g I think the HTR-2071 has been damn close to $299 lately but it sounds amazing.

  • Some sound bars do decent Atmos however they are priced well over $299.

I'm happy to try this out due to Aldi's 60 day return window it will go right back if it's no good - can't really do that at JB / Good Guys, etc

    • Let us know how you go and your post thoughts…

I dont get these things. ARC? Wouldn't you need at least eARC bandwith to get lossless Atmos on it?

I'm probably totally missing how these work.

    • Streaming services use Dolby Digital plus for lossy Atmos over ARC.

    • I wouldn't be too concerned about lossless Atmos on an ALDI soundbar tbh

      • +1

What you mean is, it’s safe to say that regardless of the bandwidth, you won’t perceive any less quality on the output (because it’s already rubbish)

I purchased one of these this morning. There were still a few left as lots people came for the 65” HDR tv. The setup was not super easy but I managed to get it working after maybe an hour of troubleshooting. The issue was that I was struggling to get it playing Dolby Atmos. Finally, I managed everything to work using an Apple TV 4K and a Bauhn 4K tv –the one that came on special on Black Friday last year. The sound is surprisingly good. Before this Soundbar I was using a Bose solo 5 Soundbar and this is definitely an improvement. We will see how it performs in the next few weeks, so far I tested playing Mad Max fury road, and the Martian on Dolby Atmos and I’m pretty happy with the sound.

    • Was there any indicator that the Atmos wasn’t working or did you just go off how it sounds? What audio settings did you set up on on the Apple TV? Initially I had sound effects but couldn’t hear dialogue until I Set the Apple TV audio format to Stereo… but then that disabled the Dolby Atmos option in Apple’s Immersive Audio settings.

      • To be honest I did feel that the Dolby Atmos sound was slightly more immersive when it was on – it felt more as if I was at the movie theaters (again the difference was just slightly, but present). For the settings I turned on the Dolby atmos setting on the Apple TV only when watching content with Atmos or Dolby vision, but then turned it off when watching regular content. I had the same issue with the voices disappearing but the way I set it up solved the problems. I think I will normally have Atmos off as there is not a lot of content on Netflix or ITunes and turn it on when necessary. What are your thoughts on the Soundbar?

      • Also, I forgot to say that you can tell when content is playing with Atmos on the Apple TV by scrolling down on your Apple TV touch remote while watching something. If on the description it shows Dolby Atmos then it is playing on that format. The Soundbar will also let you know when you play Dolby Atmos content. You will get a message on the lights at the front reading “Dolby atmos”.

        • Nice nice. That’s great advice. Thank you.
This is my first soundbar so not sure what I was expecting.
It is definitely way better than speakers on my (nearly) 10 year old TV and I can’t really find any similarly priced alternatives. Will give it a go for a few weeks and then decide. First impression says it might be a keeper.
