[VIC] Free Street Parking around Victorian Hospitals for Healthcare Workers (Fees & Fines Waived)

1000

Stay safe :)

Frontline healthcare heroes will have free street parking around Victorian hospitals as they grapple with the coronavirus crisis. Only restrictions for clearways, ambulance zones, and other dangerous “red sign” zones will be enforced by parking inspectors. Melbourne City Council also announced it would waive parking fees for healthcare workers, which is now being rolled out across Victorian hospitals dealing with COVID-19. We ask that other community members support this initiative by avoiding parking close to hospitals unless absolutely necessary.

    What took them so long?

Dan making sure he gets first billing on the 6PM news…wait til everyones watching on Tuesday night, rather than announce it on the weekend like SA did and give the workers two extra days of free parking.

      • +1

this is 100%, during the bushfires earlier in the year his staffers actually turned back local politicians in east gippsland who were going to be on scene at affected towns first to make sure Andrews was first on the scene on the news.

Great. Those disabled parking fines are real pesky

  • +3

In an unprecedented show of coronavirus goodwill

  • +2

so how will this be enforced? are frontline workers going to be given special permits? or is it a case of write if you receive a fine and it'll be waived? it's not really clear from the article

    • +1

      I guess we'll know more soon…

The MAV has been working with the Victorian Government to establish a statewide set of principles to underpin the arrangements between hospitals and councils.

How generous of them to give away something which should have been free since the beginning of time.

    • -5

Parking restrictions are there for a reason, not just revenue raising.

      • +17

There's a difference between parking restrictions for the sake of keeping traffic moving and making healthcare workers pay just to park at their place of employment.

        • Devil's advocate here, Sunshine Hospital just had a massive 8 storey Carpark built that staff and patients have to pay for to park in. Reason being is it wasnt a cheap build, and we want to pay it off sooner rather than later. Obviously VicGov would rather spend money else where than parking, so it wasnt all funded by them.

@TexasVujicic: every street around Monash Medical Centre Clayton, for about a km radius, has a half hour limit. M-F 8am-6pm i understand they dont want the street completely clogged but they dont even seem to allow residents permit parking.

if i were the council and were designing it i would make the closest street 1/2 hour. next street 1 hour, next 2 hour, next 4 hour etc. so as you got further away from the hospital you got longer times. i'm happy to walk a bit for a 2 hour spot if i have a 1 hour appointment. especially when it costs $17 to park on site.

            • @Antikythera: Current Footscray hospital has a 2P limit with Tickets, however Permits are given.
I've just parked myself in a 2P area Today coming in to work, lets find out if i get a ticket.

There are already doctor permits and doctor zones outside hospitals.

I really don’t see how this is supposed to work.

    • +6

nurses and others work in the hospital settings dont have these perks. unless you dont count them

    • -1

So anyone can park in doctor zones now?

    • +4

because doctors are the only ones that work at hospitals, if anything they're the only ones that can pay for it daily

      • +2

You make me pay for parking and I'll stop providing medical care to your hospital. There are plenty of others out there to accommodate my Maserati

    • +3

When I used to work for a hospital network (as a doctor), the parking was deducted from our fortnightly salary…so it's never been free (at least for me)

    • +1

I work at a public hospital and pay for parking. Frequently for afternoon shifts there is no parking available within the paid areas! Street parking only lasts a max of 2-3 hrs and leaves us at risk council parking fines.

  • This is a PSA and not a deal.

This is a PSA and not a deal.

When did you last post a deal?

      • I'll post a deal when I find one or when someone on OzB hasn't already posted it.
        I'm not posting a deal because I found a free Kindle E-book..

        • +2

Appreciate your hard work - been over two years since your last so you must really be waiting for a good one - can't wait!

  • they actually can't check so it is for everyone

    • +2

Only when you get a fine, then prove your employment

  • What about second line hospital workers?

    • -1

Yeah, this is elitist. Until hospital cleaners are shown the respect they deserve, this is all a marketing exercise.

      • +1

As a doctor who works in theatre, I view our theatre techs and cleaners as health care workers. So maybe you're being elitist for distinguishing them as not health care workers?

        • +1

As a health care worker that isn't a doctor, this is the first time I've heard a doctor care about someone that isn't a doctor, they are either a fake doctor or they are a doctor who still has a soul/heart

          • +1

@edumacation: Ummm I'm good mates with all the theatre techs, they keep me out of trouble! And help me 'navigate' the personalities that one can encounter…

          • @edumacation:

or they are a doctor who still has a soul/heart

This one's my guess. They are on OzBargain, so maybe they're not making enough money

  • This is free 'street' parking, doesn't include hospital parking.
    Maybe I missed that part

  • +1

Great if you can find a park on the street.

    • Yeah given most cars will be at home now and not at their workplace I would think on street parking would be more utilised prior to this announcement.

  • +3

Just for everyone to know from what’s been said around the hospital: I think this only applies to Melbourne city council for now. It’s on their website. Wouldn’t trust other councils right now, until they say something official.

  • +1

I live near a hospital in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, and they've removed all the 3 hour parking zone (unpaid, just a time limit) signs for the residential streets within a ~5 minute walk of the hospital. Usually one side of the road was residents parking (which has remained) but the other side of the road was 3 hour parking only, and they took the signs down about 2 weeks ago.

  • +1

Why do we even still need clearways during a lockdown? They serve no purpose, there is no longer any morning or evening peak. And if you can even call it that, it's lighter than traffic normally was during the day. Getting rid of clearways would be helpful to small businesses who are struggling.

I've got fined for parking infront of an abandoned land's driveway. After a long night shit at the hospital, it found $260 fine from a ranger who lacks common sense.
