Wilson Pro Staff 97L Racquet $89.10 + Delivery (Free pickup) @ TennisOnly

OZTENNIS

For when you get out of isolation this is a good price for a quality racquet.

They used to retail at $299.95 but Federer went back to using the full black racquet so these have been on sale quite often recently.
It's slightly lighter than the racquet that Federer uses but that's probably a good thing if you don't play a lot, less injuries.

  • Can’t find a way to select a pickup location and avoid paying for shipping.

  • There is no option to select pick up. Delivery only

  • Also they add 10% GST on top of those $89.10

  • Just a heads up that this racquet is not well suited to advanced players. I bought one and find it is a bit too light and lacks stability when playing against hard hitters. I will be adding some lead tape to try to improve stability, once we can get back on the court again. But if that doesn't work it will be going on eBay.
This is still an excellent racquet and would be one of the best options at this price point for intermediate players. Does not come with cover though.

  • 306g strung weight is very very light

In fact you'll probably get more injuries playing with a very light racquet

The heavier the racquet the better technique you need to swing it but less effort to get power. The racquet will do the work after you swing it

Playing with a light racqueet makes tennis elbow and tendonitis more likely the longer you play, especially against good hard hitting players

  • This is not Federer's racquet, although it looks similar. Federer's model is the Pro Staff RF97 Autograph, not the 97L.
The lighter swing weight also makes it difficult to take advantage of the Pro-staff's advantages, which are easy access to power and control (assuming you are able to handle the heavier pro-staff).

YMMV, but I would not recommend this racquet for anybody above beginner level (I am high intermediate/advanced using the RF97). At that weight, there are much better racquets to be had, although I agree with @icejester that the best choice is to use the heaviest racquet you are comfortable swinging with.

I feel like my playing style would be close to Federer's form after a couple of session on the hardcourt. For a beginner do you think the RF97 worth the extra $60 they are asking?

      • For a beginner? No. You would need to learn the basics and proper technique first to use this racquet effectively.
However, once you have that down pat, then my answer would quickly change to MOST DEFINITELY.

There are some caveats, though… First off, you would have to be strong enough to play with the racquet. I am used to it but have had friends (who have played far longer than I have) say that they feel their shoulders hurting when they serve or do overheads.

Secondly, although it is a good hitting racquet, it really benefits a player who is willing to take risks and make use of the entire court. If you find that you prefer to rally and hit winners from the baseline, Nadal's racquet (Pure Aero, I believe) or Djokovic's (Head Graphene Speed Pro) would probably be better.

If you want to try it out, don't forget that Tennis Only also do a demo program where you pay $25 to try out multiple racquets and they will subtract that from the price of the racquet you actually decide to buy. I would take advantage of that if you haven't decided which one you want, yet.

    • "At that weight, there are much better racquets to be had" — which weight is that (the 97L or RF98?). And can you give an example, please?

      Thanks for the input

Hello Chip, I really have not tried every racquet, and each player is different, so your mileage may vary. It also depends on your level of Tennis.

As far as hitting goes, at that weight, I preferred the feel of the Wilson Blade 100L, or the Yonex Ezone 98L, among the ones I've tried.

My reason: the Pro-staff 97L, with it's lighter weight just does not play like a Pro-staff, for me. It is also 3pts HL, as opposed to the other 2 I mentioned above (1pt HL), which allows me to get a better balanced racquet for the lighter weight. I generally like heavier racquets to be head light, and lighter racquets to be more balanced.

There is also the Head Radical MP, at a few grams heavier.

It really is best to try the racquets out before buying, though, as each player tends to have different preferences. Who knows, the 97L might be a good fit for you after all…

Apologies. For the "weight", I was referring to the 97L. There are not many current production racquets that are similar in weight to the RF97, and I am biased towards the RF97, as it is my racquet of choice.

  • For everyone who wanted to try out before buying, I highly recommend you take advantage of this! Can't guarantee the price will stay the same, though…

  • Think same one is at Costco for cheaper too
