Rich features but slow performance, good backup phone.

just a warning to anybody- this phone has the worst GPS reception of any smartphone I've owned over the past 10 years.

and it has no 5Ghz wireless

  • +1

Why Vodafone locked? The screenshot shows Telstra

    • +1

Sorry, copied the details from an old post. Fixed now, thanks.

    • Voda throws in another $30 kit. I got mine from Kmart price matched from BigW for $169 inc $30 start up kit. who had sold out. Unlocking worked.
Its Oled display is the best part, followed by usb c.

Band 28 sensitivity is questionable. No noticeable lag average camera and gps? lol pretty deaf.

Once opened you can’t return it … for a slow phone

  • +3

Gave mine to my son as an intro to Android (moving from iphone). Going well so far and no peer pressure from school mates at the moment with the schools shutdown.

    • +3

What is a cool phone? Guessing S10? Do kids compare specs or just go by the brand? Is the peer pressure between mates or a wider audience?

Sorry, off topic. I'm always intrigued in how kids know the specifics of each others phones.

      • -2

A cool phone is literally an IPhone.

Majority of teens seem to have IPhones, not Androids.

There was a survey done in the USA and it found that 85% of Teens had IPhones.

        • +4

Yes, but the market is vastly different in the US as compared to the rest of the world, so that makes it pretty irrelevant.

          • +3

@mickeyjuiceman: Yeah, maybe if you compare the USA to the Indian market.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if you would get a similar number in Australia.

            • +2

@BarginGrabber: I remember hearing that the reason most people in the US that switch from Android to iOS is because iMessage.

iMessage isn't as big in Australia so there isn't that pressure to have an iPhone.

            • +2

@BarginGrabber: I live in Hipster inner-Melbourne, and even here you barely see iPhones. Look at the usage numbers. It's NOTHING like the US.

            • @BarginGrabber: Android is popular in Europe, but it is due to Huawei not Samsung.

IPhone is of course popular too, for those with more money it is a status symbol

      • Some interested kids/teenagers are same as interested adults, some are more up to date as others.

Just remember, not necessarily smarter, just read up on tech specs lol.

I bought this phone 3 weeks ago at this price as a back up to my Nokia 8.1. I am amazed at the features of this samsung phone for the price. It has every feature you could want on a phone. B28, NFC , gps, sdcard support, runs android auto fine, takes pretty good pictures and all For $179.

Sure there are some limitations like only supporting 2.4 Wi-Fi (but it's still Wi-Fi) and it is noticeably slower than flagship phones but hey it's not meant to be competing with them. It is a solid, well rounded phone at a bargain price.

I have not had any issue with gps. When I've used Google maps in the car it has been precise and accurate. In apps that wanted to use my location it has always been correctly determined.

Again, for $179 this phone is phenomenal and well worth a look.

  • Is it 2Gb or3Gb Ram? On Telstra website, shows 2Gb.

  • I wonder does this work on Aldi or Boost without getting it unlocked.

    • +1

It should. I bought my dad a Telstra locked phone from Woolies last year, and it worked with Boost right out of the box.

    • +3

      Likely works with Boost.
Very Unlikely to work with Aldi
      (Without being unlocked)

Bought an Telstra A30 locked mobile
and it wanted an unlock code to use with Belong.

Woolies/Aldi/Belong are on the Telstra wholesale network.

Boost runs on basically normal Telstra.

      • and Telechoice. Telstra locked phones work on Telechoice IME.

I purchased this phone 3 months ago from Coles and it worked out of the box on the boost network.

    • +2

I bought a Telstra-locked phone (not this one) from Coles. It took a Boost sim, but not an Aldi sim.

  • +3

Not bad for like a secondary phone, beater phone or a work phone. We have a fleet of these phone at my work and for it purposes it's fine. Not a bad camera, battery life seems alright and a bloody huge screen for the price. Sure it might not have the horsepower of the latest galaxy s20. However, it not even 1/5 of the price of the cheapest s20, so what do you expect!

  • I'm looking for an affordable replacement for my mum's S5 (which has become pretty slow). Would this be a decent replacement? Would it have faster performance for light use?

    • +1

The closest comparison videos I could find was against the S6 Edge & S6. Hope this helps.
      A20 vs S6 Edge A20 vs S6

How's the battery on the S5 anyway?

      • +1

S6 wireless charging and 4 k video. Flinstone micro usb

Thanks OP, bought one for my BIL as his phone is from 1995

    • +3

Hey. Anyone who keeps the same phone for 25 years needs to be applauded and encouraged. Not undermined!

  • +2

Thanks, bought one as partner needs to replace their old broken phone.
I've been using one of these for a while as my phone, I haven't noticed any problems with the GPS on mine, it seems accurate.
The camera definitely isn't as good as the much more expensive phones, but otherwise I think it's a great phone for the price.

  • I just bought this from Coles - it is network locked with a Woolworth sim.

Any advice to unlock easily please?

    • +1

      See original post bloke

    • How is a phone from Coles network lock to Woolworths?

      • +1

I think they mean they put a Woolworths sim in and it didn't work.

        • This.

I just ported over to Boost Mobile. Got a better deal and coverage. Win win.

  • +1

I bought this phone after all the hype aboout it being best budget phone..

    It's average at best:
    - slow
    - bad design, is very slippery

Needed quick replacement phone after S8 got damaged.. this was a step back.

Only good thing I like is great battery performance, I get a full day easy with high usage.

Btw.. my GPS seems ok. I got the Telstra version from Coles.

    • +2

I got mine and very pleased for $180. It obviously is not going to compare favourably to a phone 3 times the price.

      • I agree its good for price, I just expected much better performance from a phone 2.5 yrs after an S8.

    • What other $200-$250 phones have you tried to compare this to? SG S8 was flagship that has only

had small improvements on to date to be fair, or unfaire ll.

  • Is this the single or dual sim version?

  • -2

wonder if I should buy a s7 new

  • Any stock? I've visited and rung two stores in Melbourne so far and wondering if its still for sale. And Coles don't sell phones online.

  • I got a pricematch at Officeworks this morning with 5% off so $170.05 - they have plenty of stock. You can show them catalogue online from coles.com.au

    • Did they sell you the same Telstra locked version or was it unlocked?

      • I got one for the $170 price. Blue unlocked retail. Lady said they have matched heaps.
