With all the deals lately for wine, What is your usual go wine?

My usual go to if i just need a bottle to binge drink is this: George Wyndham Bin 555 Shiraz

Standard price $7.90, always in stock. Great bang for the buck imo.

Wyndham are very under rated wines, in my opinion, and have a good value for money as you go up their quality labels into the $20s or $30s too.

My best pick for a BYO red is the Mount Pleasant Shiraz from the NSW Hunter. It is aged a couple of years before release, and available in pretty much every bottle shop. Used to be routinely under $20, but a bit dearer now, but reliably drinks well straight away. There was an OzB deal a few years ago where I ended up with a mystery six pack for under $50 delivered that was Philip Shiraz so I was quite pleased.

My only "stay away" these days is Penfold, who are priced like Apple products.

    • My other suggestion for folk looking a bit up the quality scale is this newsletter from a somewhat cantankerous chap:
      https://www.bestwinesunder20.com.au/category/news-and-views/

He is a stern reviewer of cheaper wines, holding them to a high standard - rather than a lot of wine guys who turn up their noses at anything under $50 or fawn over the "impossible" task of making a quality wine for $20. My sister got me a subscription to his paid weekly email and the specials he uncovers from smaller wine shops are worth it if you buy even a case or two a year. He also notes good deals on the flashier wines when they come around - I wouldn't drink a $30 bottle at home, but if I can get a good RRP $60 bottle for $30 I will give them as gifts.

      • Ive found most of the "Big Brands" offer very little for the price tag.
Penfolds, Jacobs creek, Wolf Blass etc

Could have just not found the right bottle yet, hence posting this!

Liquorland is doing a 4 for $40 deal of wines on clearance, some big names like Pepperjack Cab Shiraz, Taylors Jaraman Cab Sav, worth checking out. Deal doesn't seem to be working online but go in store

Bin 555 shows as $8.50 in a six pack online for Dan Murphy?

    • You don't haggle and ask for a cash discount?!?!

      • +1

Unless I am asking them to price match then I have not tried as I don't believe the checkout person has the discretion to give ad-hoc discounts.
That aside, OP post said $7.90 is the "standard" price, I said that $8.50 is the correct standard price from what I can see

        • Just making a joke. I imagine there must be people who try and haggle at DM's but I wouldn't (though I do ask for a price beat if I have seen a lower offer but have only ever go 50c "beat").

@mskeggs: I login with my dans membership and put everything in the cart.
Then buy a wish card for that value via cashback.
Delete cart. Click thru to dans via cashback and add everything back to cart. Then pay with wish card and click and collect. 6-9% discount and its all waiting at the register for you.

@Stewardo: I love these little tricks!
My personal best was the Little Creatures beer deal which I used for a Xmas Secret Santa. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/505116 We had a $50 limit and my brother in law was stoked for a case of beer and set of screwdrivers that got under the $ limit.

              • @mskeggs: Hmmm, price seems to have gone up! im going to write a letter to my state MP

              • +1

@mskeggs: I enjoy researching the wines at my leisure using Vivino, Hallidays Etc, whilst adding to the cart. If someone gave me a carton and a set of screwies, I’d be fairly impressed.

  • I'm looking forward to some smashing deals on top shelf wine in the next few months as the premium stuff goes unsold to the restaurant trade.
I would expect that the $100+ bottles are going completely unsold globally at this point, and while the first reaction might be "well, it will be better cellared" the reality is the winery needs to sell this year's vintage so they don't under cut next year's.

If you are a wine lover, expect some amazing deals on premium wine later this year.

My alcohol consumption has increased exponentially over the last month.

I have subsequently had to resort to goon.

Can confirm Cab Merlot blends are the best, Di Bortoli specifically, but i am currently chowing down on a $13 goon bag from dans, but its not as good as Di Bortoli.

    • I've decided under the circumstances to crack into some of the bottles I have put away for a special occasion, on the grounds it would be a disaster if I didn't get to drink them. Not that I think that it is a big risk, but I realised I have a few dozen really great wines I have been saving to drink over Xmas/birthday dinners with my Dad, and he has the same - and we probably don't have a few dozen special occasions left together.

And with nothing happening in life except work from home or bad news, it is nice to be able to have a chat with him about something really good (even over the phone) as we can remember past dinners and trips to wineries and things.

It is quite against my nature, which is more inclined to save and put away for later, but been a nice thing.

      • I personally don't like collecting wines, if i get a nice bottle i drink it! (Not alone, usually)

Live for today, you never know what can happen tomorrow.

        • I probably lived for the day a bit much as a young person, and then the pendulum swung the other way with tight budgets and young kids.
Now they are growing up I need to swing it back to a good balance.

  • Damn, you made me Google for a link to my second favourite bottle but overall best value by far…

    Reilly's Clare Valley RCV Shiraz

… and now I have a few more cases coming because it is on 20% off. And I note the Pressings from 2016 was also on special but OOS. Also an exceptional bottle.

(… and really getting into my Disoronno based mixers.)

    • Whats your no1?
not sure why i ask, $50 is out of my budget for a daily drink!

      • Irvine Grand Merlot.

Bet you thought I was going to say Grange but after a few vintages, I can safely say it's good but I can't appreciate it. I certainly cannot afford to keep drinking it. Most were gifts.

        • +1

I've had a few glasses of Grange over the years, and always thought it was a subtle and complex tasting wine. But not 10 times the match of many, many Aussie reds that deliver excellent quality at $50.
I suspect the appeal of Grange (apart from the Apple style 'it must be good it is so expensive') is that few bottles get cracked young. A few years well cellared makes a huge difference to strong Aussie reds.
But plenty of great $40 and $50 reds get drunk a year or two after they were bottled, that could go on to develop the things people rave over about a glass of Grange.

I wonder about the really top shelf, $2000+ a bottle French reds. I've had some well respected French wines and found them a bit pale compared to robust Aussie reds, but never the ridiculous Bordeaux's and Burgundy's.

          • +1

@mskeggs: I have had a few glasses of some ridiculously priced French reds and I honestly do not know what the fuss is about. About a decade ago, I found some really good French pinot but even then, a lot of the Aussie pinots are comparable now.

For me, ain't a Shiraz/Syrah if it ain't from the Barossa, Clare or McLaren… unless it is free then it's all good.

  • The mail coach shiraz is my goto bottle for a daily drink. It is incredible value when bws have 20% off for a pack of 6. Coupled with the 5% discount payment with gift cards it definitely is nectar to us mere mortals.

  • Currently sharing a bottle of St. Henri 2012 with the missus. Good stuff. Otherwise, I only drink wine socially.
