Moving to Adelaide and Looking at Elizabeth Area, Can SAers Chime in?

Hey all,

Any SAers want to tell me if living in Elizabeth area is ill advised or are people just fear mongering and exaggerating? I am usually pretty relaxed about these sort of things.. but don't exactly want a neighbour from hell either. I will be living probably by myself as work is going to be in the area and don't want my house robbed while I'm out or at work.

I also like the fact that it's near a train station to get into the CBD and that theres a big tennis centre nearby. Do you think perhaps I should consider some other areas? What is the traffic like getting up north to Elizabeth from down south in the mornings?

Thanks a lot everyone.

So there is no confusion I will not clutter my reply - Elizabeth is the WORST suburb of Adelaide.

    • Lol.

I read it several times to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

It's like a Mt Druitt parallel. I did a couple of shifts there a decade ago. Summary - FML.

I don't want to knock Elizabeth too hard, but it somehow got mentioned twice (#1 and #2) in the top 5 crime growth stats in SA - https://www.canstar.com.au/news-articles/top-5-suburbs-crime…

  • Yeah, there are (apparently) good and bad parts… but that's according to people who live out that way, so may well be relative.
It's not a place anyone from Adelaide would recommend you move to.

  • Are there any recommendations for nearby suburbs? I was hoping to find smaller properties but they all appear to be 3 bedroom places. I just want to live by myself if possible and keep rent below 300 dollars, even less than that would be excellent.

      Mawson Lakes.

    • Where are you working?

It's Adelaide so if you're living closer to the city you're driving against traffic flow and it's a breeze.. (hell, if you're coming from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Peth, Adelaide Peak hour traffic is already a breeze!)

      • Haha yes I know but I actually am the laziest turd ever and wish I could walk 60 seconds to my workplace if that was possible. So trying to minimise the commute time if possible. I also like cycling but I am uncertain if there is a suburb that would let me cycle that isn't overly dangerous such as 80km/hr roads with trucks.

I guess I will consider doing the drive and living in a more pleasant area.

Edit: I am going to be working somewhere in that Edinburgh area.

        • Well I'm pretty sure the "good" parts of Elizabeth are all on the other side of the highway from Edinburgh… (and it's 3 lane wide 80kph dual carrieageway through Elizabeth.)

Salisbury might be a better option I think. Even then, not really ideal.

Para Hills/Para Hills West/Ingle Farm- definitely better than Elizabeth, and still within your price range.

  • Elizabeth/Munno Para/Davoren Park/Smithfield do have a bit of a bad reputation.

    https://www.canstar.com.au/home-loans/safest-suburbs-adelaid…

Scroll down the page and have a look at the top 10 worst list. Most are in the northern suburbs. If you can, try for something like Salisbury. Or look down south.

The top 10 safest is a little misleading as these are places with very low population density.

  • OP I’m from SA ..my advice is head to inner south suburbs..lots of crime out Elizabeth way..unless of course your a drug dealer , then it’s the perfect location

      Pfff. Competition is crazy there.

    • Thanks a lot but I unfortunately will be working up north so that would be too far.

and right next to Yum Sing, double bonus.

      • I have had that for over 15 years, anygood still?

        • It was 3 months ago.
We only go there a few times a year (for the last 30 years)
          .

          • @Nugs: So still good food? I eat luong's now because I live closer…

  • I would keep away from Elizabeth, Davoren park , Andrews farm , Smithfield and Munno Para

Taking into account your work location, either go a littler further north (Gawler) or a littler further down (Mawson Lakes, Parahills, Ingle Farm. Even Parafield Gardens/Salisbury is better than Elizabeth).

  • Thanks everyone for the comments. Can you guys share an opinion about paralowie, salisubry north, burton?

Relatively good areas around those areas, a mix of mostly private and housing trust from in salsbury north area, generally better than most of the Elizabeth region.
Craigmore way is a good suggestion too if you can find a small enough place. Also check out ingle farm/para hills, up the hill from there through Wynn vale/modbury/modbury heights/para Vista suburbs are good too.

Source: grew up in this area and still located around there.

    • Salisbury North is where John Bunting, the Body in the Barrels (Snowtown) serial killer, lived and where he harmed and killed his victims. Just sayin' :)

BTW, it's Elizabeff, with two f's
    .

  • If you need to be near the Elizabeth area - Craigmore, Blakeview. I've been working at Craigmore for the past year or so (front of house role) all of our local customers are very friendly, while incomes in this entire area are generally very modest Craigmore peeps imho are more akin to the typical "Aussie Battler" family type ie/ Hard working decent folks.

  • Evening!! As others have said I would be looking elsewhere, Elizabeth is not somewhere I'd choose to live in Adelaide. Sorry if I'm offending anyone who lives there. If you don't mind a little further commute to Edinburgh other northern suburbs I'd suggest you look at are Hillcrest, Hampstead Gardens, Enfield, Gilles Plains, Windsor Gardens, Klemzig and surrounding suburbs. I lived in Hillcrest for a couple of years and loved the area - central 9kms / 20 mins to the CBD, safe, nice residents and lots of parks, especially if you have a dog or kids. I just did a quick search on realestate.com.au and there are a few nice rentals around $300pw. If you don't mind over developed living, take a look at Lightsview, greedy developers have totally ruined that suburb but plenty of amenities nearby however rentals do seem overpriced there. Otherwise, as Ughhhh said do check out Gawler or further north, close to Edinburgh, cheaper and the tasty Barossa is nearly on your doorstep. Good luck with your move to Adelaide and new job!!

  • How are you commuting to work? Bus connections between suburbs are bad, but if you drive you can also look at North East, close to the hills. Newer burbs like golden Grove and Greenwith (more expensive) or the older ones like Modbury, Redwood, Surrey Downs etc. They're all a 10 to 15 minutes drive from Elizabeth and instead of a train to the city you can take the O-Bahn (bus).

an old friend used to live in nearby Salsbury. The only redeeming feature was a decent local pizza shop.

The local saying was that you you have to be under 18 with 2 kids & on welfare to live in Elizabeth.

Thanks all, I think I will avoid Elizabeth.. gave me a fright. I will consider all other suburbs mentioned. Cheers!

  • Hey Op, bit late but wanted to say that I moved to Elizabeth South approx 3 years ago. Property was so cheap I couldn't believe it. I'm aware of the reputation but I have good neighbours so haven't had any rea; issues at all. I'm also near Elizabeth shopping centre and the train station which is great. Main downside is that the houses are really old and the streets aren't great so no night time walks for us. For this reason we are looking to move to Mawson Lakes but houses are 3x as much. When I was living in Elizabeth by myself it was fine but when my partner moved up she started complaining.. Good luck with your decision.

  • Watch Housos for a general idea

I drove through there once, and survived !!!

  • I thought this post was a joke lol…
