Where Would You Be Travelling to Now/Later if Not for COVID-19?

Hope everyone is well and safe.

Obviously not meant to offend or revisit any disappointments, but just curious to see where everyone would have been if not for the current situation.

For myself, my partner and I had Tassie booked over the Easter long weekend and I was going to propose to her there. Now that plan is on hold until I can think of a good Plan B! We were also thinking of doing NZ or Hawaii later in the year which may or may not happen.

Europe, today I would have been in Munich, after leaving Florence. Last Wednesday my calender had two notifications one said to leave for Venice, the other go-to doc for flue shot.No prize for which one I did .

Lakes Entrance for a weekend (already moved once due to bushfires)

Hamilton Island (booked for June - maybe still a small chance of happening)

Sri Lanka (May, but nothing was booked thankfully)

Was also considering proposing in either SL or HI so now I too need to think of an alternative!

  • We usually visit family in Japan around this time every year but decided not to go this year for some reason, luckily I guess. Planning to go somewhere domestic instead in January this year and hopefully maybe a weekend or two away later in this year if we are allowed.

Bali booked for end of June, was heading away for 4 days over Easter camping.

Got the accommodation back in cash for Bali, but flights are a credit. Once this is all done will probably just switch it to an Aussie holiday.

We booked business class Qatar Airways to London with Qantas points for late August, flying home business on Singapore Airlines using Krisflyer late September from Frankfurt. Looking like it's not gonna happen, after all that effort to snag the award flights :( :(

Aw shucks that's a shame… I've finally got enough QF points for 2x RTW in Business Class so really looking forward to that somewhere down the line. Honeymoon perhaps?

    • How was redemption rate with Qatar compared to Emirates?

      • Ha yeah it's gonna be a sad day when i press that "cancel" button. The redemption rate is the same for both Qatar and Emirates oneworld awards, but Qatar is much harder to book as a classic award - they were releasing seats consistently for months up until the week i wanted to book and then everything dried up. I managed to make a successful reservation on one of the last days that Qatar offered two business class seats out of Sydney. So I doubt i'll be able to get the same flight for 2021. I'm thinking we'll try and reserve two business class seats with Emirates for end of May 2021 and hope and pray that travel is allowed by then…

        • If you cancel it yourself will they still waive the cancellation fee? Ideally let them cancel it based on travel restrictions then you'll get all your points back.

At least your SIA flight, if cancelled, will be refunded in KF points. I redeemed all of my Velocity points for gift cards since I expect them to be devalued greatly even if Virgin survive. Still holding onto my QFF in hope of more travel in the future.

          • @spiff: Only if they extend their cancellation waivers past 31 July 2020. I will wait until the last minute to cancel, I have enough QFF points to book a trip for next year without cancelling the existing trip anyway.
Yessss I only have 25K Velocity points left in my account so no big loss if they go under (hopefully they won't), I transferred almost 300K Velocity points to Krisflyer to book the SIA flight so in a way, that was kind of lucky :)

@meowmeowmeow: Yeah with the recent devaluation of Velocity transferring to KF, and also the increase in KF redemption rates, it was already going to be tough to collect enough Velocity for anything other than convenience Econ bookings for linking other flights. I only had 130k Velocity so I expected this to get devalued further into oblivion if Virgin survive. But your 300k is nothing to sneeze at so glad you got yours out in time.

I doubt international restrictions will be lifted this year. Domestic restrictions maybe!

  • Eat in at McDonald’s.

When this is over, I am picking up stumps and moving somewhat permanently to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

International travel will be the last restriction removed so who knows when that will be.

@paperchaser and @Shadowsfury, enjoy your propsals - good luck to both of you :-)

    • Thank you and good luck with your new chapter!

    • Thanks

I should mention the Hamilton Island trip is booked with Virgin which is now looking even less likely!

  • Was thinking about Japan, later this year. Fortunately managed to squeak our trip into WA in March, they were closing the borders, and going into state quarantine, just as we were flying back. We booked October last year. We were worried we were going to lose the flight back.

  • My sister was going to do a year abroad in Japan to study (coming back for the mid year holiday), I was going to visit her either in sem 1 or sem 2 (or both if I kept excess expenditure to a minimum).
So I'd have probably gone at least in May.

  • I had a winter trip booked in a cabin in the national park near Selwyn. It was going to be magical. I had been trying to book it for years but I was always too late (days open up a year in advance and the good winter ones disappear within days of them opening up). I was going to give my nieces their first experience of snow, and I was going to go snoeshoeing through the forest (maybe cross country skiing if I'd gotten fit enough) and build snowmen and forts and throw snowballs.

But it got burned down in the bushfires so now I will never ever get to go :(

I was going to book a different cabin but then the virus came :-/

Aw shucks, I feel you. I was also planning to stay at the Southern Ocean Lodge in Kangaroo Island but unfortunately that was also lost to the fires. The good news is that they'll be rebuilding it, so I'll hang tight for version 2.0 when it comes around!
