New catalogue just released. Saw an earlier ozbargain post for a similar item on amazon which ended up selling out. Thought this would be a good post those who are still looking.

  • Assume it’s Aldi, but doesn’t say Aldi anywhere.

      Thanks just amended the title

  • What size?

    • +1

Available in 200ml and 300ml. Just added a note in description

  • Do they break easily?

    • +2

Have aldi sold the same batch previously? I don't think we'll find out until people have owned this batch for a while. You could always take broken glass back within 60 days. Not sure how dishwasher safe they are as there's usually an air hole for pressure adjustment which usually means water ends up between the walls.

Also these are tiny. Just use a ceramic mug shrug.

I bought these ones from last year. No issues when washing thus far, and no water seeping into the inner walls.

Intend to get the larger 300ml ones this year for those large coffees.

I'm a bit scared of these, the last ones they sold had a recall because the inner glass would shatter, it happened to two of my glasses.

But that was a while ago and it seems like a different manufacturer now?

I think these are what I'm using at the moment and they've been great. Better than Bodum. Was hoping they'd bring them back. Oh well. Might have to fork out more for the new ones.

      • Yep, still remember one colleague brag about this cup, the next moment ship happen, will stay away from Aldi for glassware.

    • +1

Its says its made from Borosilicate glass so glass less likely to shatter against any thermal shock

      • They don't shatter from thermal shock. They shatter from pressure build up inside the walls coupled with a poor pressure release system.

You will see a bit of silicone on the base. This keeps the inside watersealed/dishwasher safe but also helps it equalize the pressure inside.

Do NOT put any spoon into them and wash carefully and they'll last a long time.

    • I managed to crack a double-wall glass once with a spoon, but it was an extra-heavy fancy teaspoon.
Otherwise, I stir my sugared coffee everyday and no problems.

This is only $1 less than the normal every-day price at Target, so hardly worth bothering to mention.
Certainly not worth a special trip to ALDI.

    • +3

it's more likely a special trip to Target these days.

      • Funny because true. :-) But you could have bought these any time from Target.
So who exactly are the people who wanted these glasses, baulked at the $10 price tag from Target, and now say "$9! hell yeah, I've been waiting for these to be affordable for ordinary folk."

Nobody can rationally defend this. You'll just get some inarticulate morons who can barely manage to click the anonymous downvote :-)

        • Is this a catch 22?

  • The Bodum ones are much better quality if you can find them on sale.

    • +1

My Bodum ones broke a lot easier than the Aldi ones.

    • How do you measure this additional 'quality' of which you describe?

    • 4 of our 6 large Bodum glasses have smashed in 2 years from light knocks. Using metal teaspoons has also left micro scratches that you can't see on the inside of the glass but which can cause a cloudy ring to appear after being in the dishwasher, while all other glassware is fine. I'm going to try a different brand next.

  • What is a thermal glass? Why are they special?

    • +1

The glass material itself is not special, it is the double-wall design, and thinness of the glass.

  • I bought a 450ml equivalent one off ebay 18 months ago and it's still going strong. It was $7 then but the equivalent looks to be $13 each, such as https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Double-Wall-Layer-Cup-Coffee-Gla…

It's seen pretty regular use, including near-boiling water from a zip boiler, and bringing water to boil in the microwave. No leakage either. It feels fragile from the sound you make when you put it down, but it's so far stood the test of time. And it does a pretty good job of staying cool on the outside.

  • I grabbed last time, I broke one and one developed a crack! Good glasses tho, I wish they made smaller ones for short blacks too!

    • A pygmy glass?

  • Double walled glasses like these tend to be easily knocked over because the bases are small. We broke one of our previous ones - toppled over on the dining table and instantly cracked.

We have one with a wider base now, more like a tumbler style. So far so good.

FYI Bodum sells double walled polycarbonate tumblers. They aren't as good at insulating as the glass one but they are basically indestructible. Good if you have kids/cats.
