        We have an Epilog machine , about $25K new , 40 watt and thats about the minimum you would want for any real engraving. That will cut through wood and through the anodised layer of aluminium but it still wont mark steel.

            @Ameowzon: No problem, we use it mainly with a treffolyte type material , basically two layered plastic, to make labels.
            It has a thin top layer which the laser etches off revealing the colour below.
            If you or anyone else has any jobs they need doing please let me know as we are hardly snowed under right now :)

    Proper laser engravers cost a lot more than this one with its weak laser - They also have better safety (fully enclosed) this doesn't have.

  just read specs seems not steel, just wood, etc.

        Just get a cheap cnc kit for acrylic, better and safer you can get ones with swappable mill heads/lasers so you get best of both worlds.

        (I bought one of these a few days ago - sans laser as i think unshielded lasers are dangerous, easy to forget eyewear if a job is running for hours)

        Do a search on ebay/amazon/whatever site for '…3018 Router…'
