  • Reviews indicate they might be alright at $199 but aren't worth anywhere near $349.

    • Any recommendations?

I’m looking for anything similar (over ear, wireless, noise cancelling) and not sure where to start at the lower price points. Anything cheaper and/or better value? I thought Audio Technica were a notably good brand

I bought the Bose QC35 a while ago. I think at around 300/350 they are well worth it.
They were a game changer while flying, but I still use them around the house these days.

        • +2

They definitely seem to be the gold standard on OzBargain, but they are also almost double the price which I simply can’t justify

          • +12

@Switchblade88: They are kind of Silver considering Sony WH-1000XM3 grabs the gold.
PS: I had Bose QC35 for few weeks and then returned it and got XM3. Very happy with my decision.

            • @EssendonUser: If the Sony ones didn't make my ears so hot then i'd agree, for that fact alone I feel the QC35 are better and imo also slightly more comfortable in general. The benefits of the Sony ones don't really make up for the hot ears.

            • +1

              @EssendonUser: For an alternative perspective:

After getting some WFH budget I splurged on the XM3 without doing the necessary due dilligence. There are plenty of infuriating things about the product that I think should be worth mentioning.

              • There is no way to easily switch from connecting your XM3s from one device to another!! In this day and age. Unbelievable. Sony skimped out and used a chip with no dual A2DP support. This means if you have a phone and computer, you need to remember to disconnect the device you are using before reconnecting to the other one, else you have to do the repairing + connecting process from scratch on your secondary device. Super dumb, plenty of online complaints about this one
              • The support forum experience is terrible. Lots of people asking basic questions like whether it's possible that Sony can support dual A2DP with a firmware update, or to inquire about the many bugs introduced in each new update… Support agents are either untrained or are bound to a degree of secrecy to the point where they are unhelpful.
              • The ear cups aren't intended for extended use, your ears get really hot after using them for a while.
              • The microphone is really bad. To the point where I can't use it for work. Not good for $350 cans that should be a work powerhouse.
              • The app is really buggy on my iPhone XS and crashes all the time. Has an App Store rating of 2/5
              • Might be a personal thing, but there is some weird power issues on my pair where you HAVE to use their USB-C cable to charge (doesn't work using my MX Master 3 cable, which I know works for other USB-C devices). This is a problem because the cable they provide is literally 5cm long.

If you want something purely for music listening (no calls), have no intent on switching your listening device ever, and are OK with subpar supporting software and subpar product support, maybe? Honestly, deeply regret my purchase and would get the QC35s or wait for XM4s anyday.

          • @Switchblade88: I've had my QC35s for 3 years now and the battery life is still amazing as well as the ANC. It really is worth the money for me because I have used it daily since getting it.

        • I bought the QC35 first gen at 200$ off a family friend last month, no regrets so far

Sennheiser HD 4.50. They're currently $150 on the sennheiser outlet website.

          • @calcium: They offer full warranty and free returns if you're not happy. The pair I got we're pretty much brand new and that's the experience I've heard from most.

I may or may not have instagrammed searched for an isic student card when I purchased mine. If you have an eligible card you can get 15% off i think, brings it down to $127.

        • Do you have a link for these? I can't find them on a normal google search, might be me ;)

        • +2

Doesn't show until you get to checkout but the 4.5 is out of stock :(

          • @mistermr6: Sadly you're right

          • @mistermr6: That's frustrating, I was going to buy them.

          • @mistermr6: As the 4.50BTNC has been superceded by the 450BT, I doubt the 4.50 will reappear on the outlet. Frustrating it doesn't show the out of stock until you've decided to try and buy.

Have a look at the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2. I got mine a few years ago for around $200. Love them

Taotronics TT-BH046 have some good reviews and are ~ $110 at Amazon.

I'd get the Sennheiser HD 4.50bt for $40 more from their online outlet store.

        I had a look.. is refurbished…

  • The sound quality of these is very good. Noise Cancellation is decent. But the major drawback of the headphones is their look when you wear them. They look so weird. Also the pads are not very comfortable.

    • I have tested many headphones including this before I bought the Sony M3. Yes the sound quality of these headphones are really good. You hear every single instrument. Sony's are the overall best headphones for me. But the Sony's sound quality feels a bit dampen on the mids. Oh and also Sony's are bit bass heavy. I had to use the EQ to bring down the bass. I guess it is personal preference.

      • I didn't like the default EQ on the M3s at all, but there's good options to change it in the Sony headphone app.

        • Yes. I had to do the same to bring the base down a bit. Then I found out that if you change the default EQ, Bluetooth codec would revert to SBC from LDAC.

  • Swapped from a traditional gaming headset 2 years ago for these, paid about $300.
    Would never go back.
they are some of the best equipment i own. ANC on a headset for my pc is a game changer.
My only peev with this headset is the charging, You cant turn them on while charging, however the battery lasts a pretty decent ammount of time.
    10/10 would buy agian.

    • However i will never buy from the good guys ever agian due to there shitty returns service.

We have two pairs (me and wife) and both are very happy. I would say they are over 80% of qc35 in basically every aspect (sound, NC, built quality etc.), so if the price is 60%, it's a no brainer. The only small complain I have is max volume, could be a bit higher.

    Edit: and micro USB.

  • Can anyone recommend a way to use these with an old tv that doesn't have Bluetooth?

  • Any recommendations for decent (but reasonably cheap - sub $150) wireless headphones that aren't noise cancelling..? Just for watching movies, listening to music around the house?
    TIA

You could wait around for these Yamaha’s to drop down to $149 again.

These cans (Tribit XFree Tune) are highly rated. But I haven't got a pair so can't comment. But it's worth doing some research.

Other option would be these Tao Tronics: https://www.amazon.com.au/Cancelling-Headphones-TaoTronics-B…

      • Yeah those Tribits get really good reviews, thanks will do some research

30USD on Amazon US and 137AUD Amazon Oz??? WTF

        • I know right? It's just ridiculous

          • @dealspider: Yeah I noticed on all the YouTube videos that were saying well worth $50 which is around 80AUD

            • +1

@beebul: Found that I can just order directly from tribit website. 40 USD plus 10 USD shipping to Australia from their China warehouse. Much more attractive option now!

              • @NoApostrophePlurals: Wow thanks, I ordered two pairs for $155 AUD delivered 👍🏻

                • @beebul: No worries! What are you using the two to connect to TV? Still deciding which device to use to connect to a dumb TV

                  • @NoApostrophePlurals: Ah good point, my main TV is new so has BT, but the others don't. I think I have a Headphone>Bluetooth sender somewhere. Will dig out and test with some other headphones.
