Pre-Order Asus EEE 10" - XP $628 @ JB HI-FI (due next week???)

80

Hey guys, thought I should share this with you, was at JB HI-FI checking out eee's and asked the guy, if he had any word on 1000h, he said the winXP versions are due on sale next week (he showed me next weeks catalog and it's on the front page for $700) and offered me a pre-order with 10% off all notebooks special which ends on Sunday.

So total price was $628.20. I didn't place my order though, as i was at a JB on the other side of town from me and i'm in Sydney for work all next week, so i'm going to try my luck at placing an order in one of their stores. Hopefully to pick up and return back to Melbourne with me.

Anyway if anyone wants in on a bargain, seems like a good chance, but hurry as the special ends tomorrow.

  • This website reckons MSI's Wind is slightly better and at a lower price:
    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/eeepc-wind-faceoff.a…

    • To be honest… their so damn similar.. Hardware wise, their both basically the same machine (i.e. same motherboard, video card, cpu and ram). So battery, performance are all the same the difference are negligible and a most likely due to uncontrollable various in the testing environment.

The biggest difference are: Unit layout (i.e. keyboard and monitor) and the eee has better speakers and better wlan support.

So it's 50/50 really, but i'll get the eee, because i can get it pretty soon and with 6 cell battery for cheaper.

  • Im writing this on an EEE. Handy little machines. Also, theyre bringing new models out all the time so look out for bargains on the older models…

    • Do you have any problems with looking at some web pages? I heard the earlier EEEs were limited to smaller screens than most developers aim their web pages for.

      • I've got an early Eee (701 with 7" LCD at 800x480), so I have to make sure OzBargain runs on it :)

      • The 900 has a larger screen - 8.9" with resolution of 1024x768.
Its certainly not your desktop but its quite good.
An awful lot more usable than the 7" models, in my opinion.

  • Well done & well researched 3G.
Thanks on behalf of other OzBargainers who might be thinking of going EEE all the way home.

    Cheers,

  • Since most people already have a copy of XP I think the linux one might be a better buy when it comes out because of double the ram or hdd(?) for the same price.

  • I'm not too keen on the non-solid state HDD though. Is there an option to get that instead?

  • Must be an Eastern seaboard thing only - I tried a local JD HiFi store in Adelaide, and he advised they are not due for any stock & couldn't offer me anything - firstly a 1000h Eee, let alone a 10% discount off the "staock they won't have"!!! :->((

    • Lol.. ask him to pull up next weeks catalog and look at the FRONT FRICKEN PAGE! :p

  • i asked three sydney stores: pitt st, galleries and miranda and all three told me the 1000h wasn't on their system, they didn't have a copy of the catalogue and the next catalogue wasn't due for about 2 weeks - which jb store did u try?

    • Hmm.. well all the Melbourne shops I tried seemed to have a copy of the catalogue.. and next weeks catalogue does get released on Monday.. Don't you find it funny that next weeks catalogue gets released in 2 weeks? lol it doesn't make sense :p

      • Yes…I had to hang on the phone for 20 minutes…..than another 5 while he went away to check….and basically said "b**ger off….you're dreamin'" About as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike!! ;->) No wonder Bracks called Adelaide a "backwater" ;->)

      • hmmm… what i think i was saying is i was told there is no catalogue next week and that the next catalogue (not next week's catalogue) was coming in 2 weeks…

but anyhoo - i called another store and actually managed to find someone who knew something about it - and she took my name and number and promised to call when it came in, but said she couldn't take any preorders :(

  • FWIW, one of the banner ads has PCMarket taking pre-orders for the 1000H at $899!! http://www.pcmarket.com.au/ so if JB HiFi are selling these at $700 even without the 10% discount, it may well be a good price.

  • Just went to JB Southland.
Didn't know what I was talking about until he found the product code in their items.

There is a link here: http://jbcommercial.com.au/?cata_id=1227040 and http://jbcommercial.com.au/?pack_id=4184&catp_id=25

Basically you need to pay in full the $698 for them to give you the 10% off (to make it $628)
If you cancel the order JB hold $20.
The salesman told me to wait and call sometime during the week and that he would match or beat the price with 10% off.

  • Thanks for the url/links above……by the time you'd posted this, they were closed, so I sent an email to the JB HiFi Digital World to see if I can get one via the net & pay freight etc. Oh & also asked re the 10% discount ;->)

  • !!!

If you want a notebook for around this price and size and weight are not a concern, JB HiFi also have a couple of full size notebooks now going for $647.00.

    The advantages being:
    - optical drive
    - larger RAM and hard drive
    - more ports

    Disadvantages being:
    - larger
    - heavier
    - shorter battery life
    - Vista systems (not XP)

    ACER - ASPIRE AS5315-301G08Mi 15" NOTEBOOK for $647.00
    COMPAQ - PRESARIO C774TU 15" NOTEBOOK for $647.00

  • Thanks for the info, foundit……but I've wanted one of these little Eee's since they arrived…..and it's taken great restraint to "keep the powder dry" until a 2nd or 3rd iteration came along (as it seemed every day ASUS would announce/leak a different model/style etc)!!! ;->) …..and, the O/S being Vista would be the predominant "disadvantage"……. ;->)

    • XP is a stable, mainstream Operating System. Runs plenty of apps. Getting an extra 40gb HDD space is not really a "disadvantage"

  • :)

    You are welcome … :)

I, myself, am trying to resist the tiny little EEE's … I can't justify buying one … but yet they are so mobile, they call to me :)

Though … I'm thinking the lack of an optical drive is a concern for me … :)

    • Get an external DVD Burner. The only problem is that some weigh more than the EEEpc itself :-(

This one is $132 and quite light:
      http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=4…

      • :)

Yeah … by the time you add an external burner, with the extra weight and cost … it's probably worth buying a slightly larger other notebook …

A dvd burner inside a different notebook, won't need to run off the mains …

or do you know of a DVD burner than can run off of a notebook's USB ports? (I know of a player but not a burner )

  • Its now on the front page of the JB computer section of their website http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/

    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/images/2008/07/HERO2-JB-AU-73-20080…

Also I saved it to imageshack just in case JB decide to remove it from their website at that price
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/9415/hero2jbau7320080708nav…

    Price is $648.

  • Over here in "backwater" Adelaide, we got the JB HiFi catalogue today…..front page…..$698. Crownie, how come our SA "paper" catalogue says $698…..and yet the links you've provided show $648?? How can the "url webpage" price be used in store……or do you have to order it online to get the $648 price? When I click on the "Buy Laptops and PC's Online" on that url…..I end up with a webpage & message :

    System Error!

Your page request has generated an error. We have logged the failure and will attempt to rectify the issue ASAP.

You may wish to try your request again, or contact us for assistance.

    ….any clues……Cheers :->)

    • @ozzie — I think it was $648 because there was a 10% off all PC and notebooks last week so you have to pre-order the Eee PC 1000H last week to get this price.

  • OK, thanks scotty… :->)

  • Maybe Scotty.

I found the price odd when the cataloge clearly states $698.
I don't think they even have stock yet.

Going to "try to get one for $625 hopefully with a protective case thrown in.
    Wish me luck.
