  • What's the normal price, OP?

      • +3

Ok therefore this is just an advert and not a deal.

    • $2.4~2.6/kg, over value. pass

  • +5

One month ago I bought 20kg with $59. So this price is still a bit high.

    • +2

I used to buy 20 or 25kg bags for $50 but they’ve gone up in price now. Agree 5kg for $20 is a bit of a rip off

      • I'm still annoyed about the switch from 25 to 20kg

        • Yeah, the time of 25kg was gone

          • @codinghelloworld: many things have moved to smaller bags, OH&S is a big deal, especially for people stacking shelves, most building material like tile adhesive , etc only comes in 20kg bags now.

    • So is the price you paid as the current rate per tonne of rice is $795 (or less) at the moment, so 80 cents a kg a most.

  • +8

I bought this exact bag last weekend at a Bankstown grocery shop for $18. One of the shopkeepers said it'd been $20 a few weeks before, so prices were/are coming down.

Overseas countries have stopped exporting rice. That's all I'm saying. PANIC PANIC PANIC OZBARGAIN NOW…. TOO LATE SOLD OUT.

  • +4

I got a 10kg sun rice jasmine rice from a local Chinese supermarket for $21.

And that’s not even a sale price !

    • +4

      Have you checked whats inside?

    • +3

You're going to compare it to Sunrice?

    • -1

u be surpirsed at rice prices for jasmine, 5 dollars a kg can be normal for good brands

  • +4

Lots of rice in asian shops nowadays. Saw Tongli selling Sunrice Jasmine Rice (Cambodia) at $49.98 for a 20kg sack. Chef's Choice brand going for less than $40 for 20kg.

    • +2

Sunrise no where near Lion, compare Audi to Toyoto

      • -3

If you know how to cook, Sunrice can be as good as benz.

        • +1

It's Sunrice. It's good for congee.

It's like saying produce variety or quality doesn't matter if you are a good cook. That is rubbish, produce quality is the most important thing.

        • Even I use $500 Tiger rice cooker cant cook Sunrise the same outcome as Lion.

so you don't even need to buy Sunrise, just buy Chinese rice and cook like Benz please.

It is to say Angus beef is just as good as normal beef.

Just don't BS if you don't know.

          • +2

@SnoozeAndLose: Chinese rice is mostly short grain and not famous for jasmine usually. Some Chinese rice brands are glorious among short grain. If you want to cook them like jasmine rice, you've got the wrong rice, so don't complain about rice.
Also, Sunrise is a brand, it gets rice from different countries, so unless you specify which variety, you're mixing up Audi & Toyota yourself.
By the way, it's Audi and VW got class action around the world, not Toyota.

            • @Jamesx: Agreed. Also rice is not like a car. Its harder to reproduce identical product year by year. Depends on climate, environment, production method. So like wine and coffee, its very subjective hence branding and psychologically factors play a role.

        • cooking technique makes all the difference.

      • Gotta say we weren't fans of the aussie Jasmine Rice from Sunrice but we find the Cambodian variety pretty good. Have also tried other Jasmine Rice brands like Royal Umbrella, Golden Phoenix, the one from Costco and a few others but eventually settled for Sunrice. Bang for the buck.

        • Sunrice "Sushi rice" isn't bad, but their Koshihikari isn't that great. Californian Koshihikari is far superior for those who enjoy short grain rice.

  • +2

5 kg woolies essential long grain is just under $7.

Im a basmati girl, but I've bought 5kg bags of good quality basmati here in Perth for $13 recently.

    • +1

Coles own brand of long grain rice is $1.4/kg and or 2kg bag for $2.80. Everyday price. They are OK freshly cooked but get fairly dry/hard the next day.

      • +2

That’s when you make fried rice

  • +1

If you have enough rice for the moment, I'd hold off for now. But I also think it's a good idea to get a bit of a stockpile going on the basics if you have the space and money. There could be blips in suplly chains.

    • +3

But I also think it's a good idea to get a bit of a stockpile going on the basics if you have the space and money.

      and

There could be blips in suplly chains.

      have you considered why?

      • -1

        Drought. Recent crop.
Insolvency, transport issues and other countries refusing export medium term
        War. Medium to long term.

Find out which commodities can be stored. Invest in learning how to store them and the smallish amounts to do it.

Anyone who think that after the world recovers from the virus there will be peace is suffering from an optimism bias. It only takes two countries to start a world war. One is China. Which other country or countries will kick it off is hard to ascertain at this time. We will all be sucked into it one way or another. This is the the calm. Treasure it. Civilisation is overdue mass conflict. To assume peace will last is proof that one has not learned from history. I will be sorry to see it. More sorry still that my child and (possible) grandchildren will live it. So, buy rice. Learn to store it. It's cheap now. It might make a difference to those you love. Also beans, wheat, seeds, etc.

        • +1

There are always alternatives to rice. Specifically carb alternatives like pasta and bread which Australia is self sufficient. If you can't find one specific food, there are many alternatives.

If a war started, the last thing you want to do is assume your normal routine. You want to be flexible to survive.

        • +1

Wow, there's optimism bias and there's paranoia. It's this kind of paranoia that has the masses hoarding. You started strong with 'hold off if you have enough rice', then went downhill.

        • Agreed about war part, but The country started wars the most in the world since WW2 would be the one for sure.

      • with covid not as many people working overseas either, so supply chains do slow down …the canned beans at coles and woolies are made in italy and not all the varieties are always on whole yet ….juts chickpeas, lentils, harder to get butter beans ……

but how much space do you have to hoard food ……just rice isn’t enough, need the chicken and beef and stuff ….to. a,e a. earl, rice on its own isn’t a meal.

Although Lion is a ok brand $4 per kg is stealing.

    Lion rice 2020
    Liverpool pick up.

  • i have heard so many good quality basmati rice but never heard about this brand.

    • I wonder if Lion brand has basmati rice.

    • +1

      Basmati is truly glorious rice.

      • +1

i keep 5. varieties of rice, basmati, jasmine, medium grain , short grain and normal long grain.
it depends what you are cooking , can’t make sushi or risotto with jasmine or basmati, just like thai food doesn’t nice with medium grain, and indian food tastes next with basmati.

i’m not asian or indian so want raised with either rice variety as a daily dish.

  • +1

Sinc when jasmine rice has price of basmati?

  • No deal here as per above

  • +1

I always just buy this Lion brand from my local Asian grocer. This is much better than coles or woolies sunrice brand and has a better texture and taste.

The price is usually $15-$16 before COVID.

So this is most definitely not a deal.

  • I bought 5 kg for 12 5 and avail at coles and wollies.
    So 7.4 for taste lol

Trump brand lentils. Probably cures coronavirus. And leaves you feeling delusional and loathing.

    • maybe it is injected disinfectant

  • Jasmine rice is 5kg for $20 at woolies and you get to bring it lower with GC. This isnt a deal at all, just an advert.

  • Saw Lion Brand 10kg $36.99 yesterday at Jasmine Supermarket Maroubra (Plenty of stock including other brands). The shop has increased the price apparently. About a month or so ago bought the same 10kg Lion brand from this shop for $34.99 because we desperately ran out of rice at home. The next days, some other Asian groceries shops sold it at $30. 5kg for $19.99 is definitely jacked up in price.

  • Never tried Lion before.
Is it that different to Royal Umbrella?

    • Can't recall Royal Umbrella taste, tried once only long time ago, I think. It's more expensive than Lion. We eat rice daily and always buy the bulk 20 / 25kg whenever possible and always find Lion is the cheapest compared to other brands (Golden Phoenix & Royal Umbrella). They are about the same quality in my opinion.
