Wow, 3090180270 days is a long time to wait..

    Pretty good deal.
Am receiving 4 x $38 credits off bills (on days 0, 90, 184, & 275), but no $100 donation to Food Bank - in earlier promotion.

  • $/kWh for Essential Energy? Link wouldn't open

  • +1

PowerShop price is deadly expensive at least for AUSNET.

    • +1

That's because their billing model is very different.

What you pay is never the (AUSNET etc) displayed standing rate.
That's the rate BEFORE the discount! Other providers show the rate with the discount applied.

You buy prepaid packs that reduce future bills. The Mega Pack prepays estimated consumption for 3 months & reduces the bill by 15%.
(I paid $135 for $159 electricity for 3 months, less the $38 credit every 3 months. So cost $97 for 3 months estimated use.)

The packs you buy determine the discount. There are also monthly special offers at other discounted rates. Highest discount I bought was 16.5%.

Was equal cheapest supplier for me in SE Qld by government energy comparison site, then cheaper again with credits in first 2 years.

      • So if you can’t pay for the packs, you lose out. It’s a gimmick

        • I never believe a Murduck😉

You can't afford $1 for a discounted prepaid Pack?
(I only gave the example of their best permanently discounted pack.)

Choose to buy as little prepaid electricity as you can afford / want (eg $1) with the Power Saver Pack & get 12% discount. Then buy some more at same discount when you want.

If at the billing date you haven't prepaid - you can buy a 12% discount pack then to pay!
          So where's the gimmick?

As I said, there are different other packs, with different discounts, covering a few days to 3 months electricity.

I prefer 15% discount & it locks in the price charged for electricity. The current Mega Pack cost me $97 for 3 months electricity. (Low use in electricity only house, no solar.)

          Working fine for me.
Check with Powershop for details - there are many packs. It took me a while to understand.

Or consider another provider if you don't want to pay as little as $1 in advance, or think it's all just a gimmick😉

          • @INFIDEL: The trick I've learnt (from friendly PowerShop staff) is to turn a discounted prepaid Pack purchase into a payment at the end of the monthly bill cycle.

Click to Buy the Pack, choose to pay by Bpay, but don t pay. That adds it to the amount owing at the end of the month - debited automatically from my bank account. Handy if you have a credit at the end of the billing period, as it reduces your payment.

That effectively makes a PowerShop account the same as a post-paid monthly account with other electricity retailers.

            • @INFIDEL: Thing is, you aren’t better off than paying bills on time with other retailers, I’ve used government comparison sites and Powershop is never at the best value end of things

              • @DemocracyManifest: Depends a lot on location. Some locations have many competitive offers.

Powershop is never at the best value end of things
Really? That's not what was shown on the Government energy comparison site when I decided to sign up in December - it was equal cheapest option! With the credits for joining it was much cheaper!

I do my research - before deciding. PowerShop was best value at my location.
When the credits run out, I'll do my research again.

                • @INFIDEL: Good for you I will check again however to see if this has changed

                  • @DemocracyManifest: It's been discussed before - some inner city locations have better offers.

But comparisons depend on so many factors that differ between us.

Pricing depends on which State you live in & which retailers are available where you live. Some places only have 1 retailer!

Some retailers have addition fees or require a long term contract.

And depends on individual energy use patterns. I use little electricity (currently 3.2KWh/d), so daily supply charge is more important than KWh charge for pricing.

As my bills have been around $32/mth (without any concessions - I receive about $30/mth taking bills to just over $2/mth!), it's sometimes not easy to achieve great savings.

                    And if solar installed. (No)
                    If gas used. (No)
If there is a smart meter (No)
                    - with different charges at different times. Again cost depends on your own patterns of use.

I used the site https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au for comparisons.
                    Used a typical bill.

              • @DemocracyManifest: Just as a reference point, Powershop is recommended as the top spot by the Vic government comparison website with my recent history of half-hourly usage history uploaded. This house has a small solar system.

So it really depends on your usage pattern….

Click or OVO is probably the cheapest for the majority of people by default, but if you're willing to fiddle a little more and like Powershop's system (and the way they do things), plus you enjoy using an app to track, meter report and purchase electricity etc, then powershop is worth it. You'll still get up there with the cheapest providers by default if you are willing to fiddle a little more, basically.

I like what they are doing so I switched a few weeks ago.

They are one of the few companies that are helping people upgrade or switch to smart metres. They have a page on their website where you can register for a smart meter.

      Switched in December from Origin.
      Telephone support has impressed me.

Quick to answer or call back if do my answer immediately. (Origin repeatedly took 20min to answer, had to explain issue of their overcharging many times on call to various overseas call center staff. Frustrating!)

Friendly local staff who talked me through PowerShop's different system & how to get the best value. Some good tips.

Took a while to settle in as don't have a smart meter to record daily use. So need to submit meter reading.

Thanks - must look into registering for a smart meter.

I've always been very impressed with Powershop's response time. Very quick replies after sending them a request on their website. No need to have to queue on the phone for ages like the other major retailers.

  • Powershop can be good but can be REALLY confusing model for a first-timer (which I once was). After a while i left as i realised the gimmicks of their 'power pack' purchases are designed to hide the rates you pay making it harder to compare & leave.

Their app was best in market 2 years ago but now AGL is ranked #1.

    • What are their electricity prices like compared to say, OVO? What postcode are you in?

  • Hey guys I'm super confused with the power packs is it better to get them when I join? What are they? ELI5?

    • +1

The more you purchase ahead of time, the cheaper it gets. It's all explained on their website.
