    Anyone watching tower of god…?
    Lol at blue turtle

  • OP - the model numbers that end with "K" , does that mean made in China?

    • +4

From my understanding 'K' models are manufactured in Malaysia.

    • +6

Most modern Seikos with the K designation have the movement made in Malaysia and are cased (or built) in china. There are still arguments as to whether Seikos "made in japan" models are actually made in japan or not. They don't follow the country of manufacture laws like we have in Australia so its impossible to know. The only consensus is that all versions of a Seiko watch are identical and where its made doesn't matter insofar as quality as they all follow the same quality specifications.

      • +2

Also I've seen plenty of reviews that could not find a difference between the J and K models, one even claimed the K was better quality. That said I still paid the extra for a SKX009J haha

      • More often than not the J models are reserved for their higher end watches or the Japanese market. Japanese don't tolerate crap so I have no doubt they would never gimp their jdm watches.

        • +1

J models and JDM are two different things, JDM models have different catalogue numbers (New green alpinist is SBDC091 in japan and SRPE15J elsewhere) and a kanji/english date wheel, the Japan models we get overseas are usually english/arabic date wheels. It's really hard to pin down, which is why there is so much confusion in the seiko buyers market.

    • Ok terima kaseh :)

        That's Terima Kasih :)

        • Got it :)

Upvoted. Starbuy have good pricing on Seiko from what I've seen, and great customer experience from my own purchase with them.

I inquired about an out of stock model, they emailed back with an ETA, I of course just kept hovering the product page every few days around the day they said it would be in (assuming they wouldn't email me back when it was in stock), and the day it came back online they actually emailed me to let me know and I bought.

Watch got delivered in a couple of days, happy overall!

    • Chiming in here to say I've also bought from them a couple times previously and have always had a great experience with them.

    • The rep here is awesome!

  • From previous deal conversations, i recall some mentioning about these having alignment issues. Are these still the case and is it more prominent in the K compared to the J models? Thanks

    • Yes they still have alignment issues. I doubt J is any better than K from what I've seen in reviews.

      • I had a J turtle and still had alignment issue

        • My J SKX has alignment issues

  • Was going to get the Samurai but after watching some youtube vids the Blue Turtle looked a bit better. My Seiko I got for my 21st in 2003 (https://i.imgur.com/yPSTLXu.jpg) has been a trooper but it is getting a bit tired.

    • are seiko watches high quality?

      • Not really. Grand Seikos are where the quality starts. but you have to add another zero and then some. The seiko prospex are rated pretty well for cheaper automatics though.

        • +4

Personally I think they are very good quality for their price. Sure there’s debate about whether some brands, such as Orient, have taken over that value for money mantle, but I like quite a few of Seiko’s designs and their history / legacy is one of the best. A Samurai for under $350 is good value.

          • @The Almighty Dollar: Yeah I got an orient. seemed solid until the face just seemed to break out of nowhere, from under the screen. warranty doesn't even seem to be existent.

      • +6

To further Almighty Dollar's point: It's hard to beat the value of Seiko's propex range considering you'll be paying $250-$400 for a lot of worse watches elsewhere, think fashion brands (Fossils, Daniel Wellington, Armani etc.) or the gazillion Latin/Europe sounding mushroom brands you constantly see on Facebook. With the same money, you can easily pick up 200m rated proper no-nonsense professional divers (chapter ring alignment issues aside) or some intricate dressers like the Presages.
Of course if you just want the best bang for the buck any sub $50 quartz will tell accurate time just fine (or better yet, use your phone), but Seiko, as well as Citizen and Orients, offer some amazing value for the buck.

      • yes

  • Got me excited, I thought these are samurai swords :(.

  • +1

I'm hoping for the Padi samurai to go on sale again…

    • +1

@ShouldIBuyIt Thank you for letting is know. We will see if we are able to get some stock from Seiko. Thanks

  • +1

Note most of the cheaper Seiko watches are now case assembled in China….not good imho.

The dearer models such as the Astron range for example are fully manufactured In Japan, same as their Grand Seiko range, amongst others.

You cant beat the Japanese for attention to detail & watches especially.

Having purchased a number of Seiko watches in the past I would strongly suggest you check that the Seiko watch model you wish to purchase has not only Japanese movement but also case assembled in Japan.

I bought a blue samurai from Starbuy last year for $325 and had a great experience. The watch is massive though so beware if you have small wrists.

  • Honest question - why are these so popular? What makes them stand out apart from other watches? Consider that I'm a noob.

    • +6

History and quality. Just wear what makes you happy (just not a Daniel Wellington).

        Or a Rolex…

      • +1

        Thanks!

    • +1

I used to think the expensive Swiss watches were the best, so I bought an Omega seasmaster, which I now regret ever since I discovered all the beautiful models for Seiko, (e.g. Alpinist, Cocktail Time, Prospex etc). I now find myself wearing my $400 Alpinist more than the Omega.

      • Starting with Seiko but will eventually look at getting a Speedmaster on my wrist ;)

        • You will find yourself being quite content with Seiko, then just invest the excess $5,000 you would have saved 😊

  • Newbie here - is the hardlex glass nice? I've always heard of sapphire for watch glass?

    • It's Seiko's proprietary material, in a nutshell it's not quite as hard as sapphire but also not as brittle.
I have yet to scratch any of my hardlex crystals so I'm not really bothered when it is offered instead of sapphire (granted sapphire always sounds more premium).

    • It's not great and will scratch or scuff if you're not careful with it, same as other mineral crystals. I've scratched one up significantly by being careless with it, had another chip at the edge, and have had several others survive for years without a mark.

Bang for buck and quality automatic movement that will last years on end. Not to mention great for diving/water. Speaking from someone who is a luxury wrist watch fanatic, Seiko diver watches are wonderful for daily wear.

    • AWS/AWBBS?

  • Hi Rep. Would you be having special on padi turtle or the grey turtle? I've been waiting for those. Missed the last grey turtle sale for 339 regretful.

    • @zt_38 We are expecting the PADI turtle in from Seiko this week. Not sure on the pricing till the stock arrives however. Please check on the website on Tuesday. The Grey Turtle is now very hard to get. Thanks

      • Thank you Rep!

I was thinking too long for the last grey turtle sale. damn missed it. regretful :( it was actually my preferred turtle colour. Any specials on the king turtle as well? I much prefer the ceramic bezel and saphhire glass.

  • Just for advice, thoughts on Tissot open heart powermatic 80, and open heart bambino (orient watches)? As an entry level newbie, not sure what to go for

    • +1

Tissot won't be in the same price range. Tissot will get you 80h power reserve though. I've got one and love it. I'd say if you're tight on budget, go for the bambino, but that depends what you're after, dress watch or business watch.

    • Seiko have open heart models as well, e.g. Presage

  • I'm waiting for the new Samurai with sapphire glass and ceramic bezel to hit Starbuy for deep discount off RRP.
