980

After posting the Optus deal I noticed this family deal from Aldi wasn't not posted on here.

With this plan you pay $80 and get 4 sims with unlimited calls and sms and 72gb to be shared. Unused data rolls over. Aldi uses Telstra network.

International calls and sms to selected countries:
Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand, UK, USA.

Data Sharing
The entire Family Plan data allowance is shared between an Owner and up to 3 Users. No one has priority, it’s first in best dressed but you can set limits on individual User services.

If your family runs out of data before your plan expires, Top Up with 3GB for $15.

If there’s data left when your plan expires, recharge with another Family Plan within 24 hours to roll it over. Find out more about data rollover.

The legal owner of all services in the Family
Has all the control via the Family Plan dashboard in MyALDImobile online account
Can recharge, monitor use, set data limits and invite or remove users
If the Owner terminates their service or recharges with a different plan, the Family Plan is cancelled. Users will stay on the same account in the Owner’s name with only their PAYG balance available for calls, SMS and data.

User:

The Owner can add up to 3 User services to enjoy the unlimited standard calls and SMS and share the data. Users can check their balance via SMS.

  • Oops just found it (even though still has old allowance). Moderators feel free to delete. Thanks

I just put my 5 family members on Optus 365 day pre paid for $10.50/10gb a month each. Just in case you wanted to save some money and live at a home with wifi.

Personally I have separate deals for my family. Currently majority is on belong.

      • That looks good, do you have a link @onlinepred

        • I don't think it's 10.50. Its $12.50 a month https://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/sim-card/180-sim

          • @fozzie: ok thanks, have seen that one. You can sometimes get boost yearly for $135 but want cheaper.

          • @fozzie: Yes this is correct. So I pay 62.50 for 5 people. All managed on one App by me. Can top up data, can also access their great travelling allowance at $20.

            • @onlinepred: Onlinepred, are you saying that you all share the same data?

              • @fozzie: No all separate. 120 gb a year each. I can top up anyones data through the Optus app though. I don't like sharing data, as once someone was hotspotting to their laptop, and it downloaded steam game updates and blew through the shared data. I prefer isolating everyone's data to mitigate the risks, and they can see and manage it for themselves rather than having to try and manage a shared data. Been there done that ;-)

                • +1

@onlinepred: Sorry but I reckon you would be better off with belong. You can get belong at $20 ($40 sim) which would give you 80gb the first month and first month included. Sign up using your family referrals so you would get $40 for each extra sim ($20 for you and $20 for new family member) Second month pay $40 (but would cost you $20 if using referral). The rest $10 a month. That way you would pay $140 for 130gb of data that never expires. Data can be gifted as well between yourselves.

                  • @fozzie: $10 savings and lose benefits of optus. It's fine if you don't travel I guess. No one will be travelling I erseas for a while so prob might be worth saving $10 if you want to go with belong. Having had both mobile and nbn through belong I won't go with them again unfortunately.

                    • +1

@onlinepred: Received a recent email from belong, you no longer receive referral credit if you are on the lowest plan.

It won’t be deleted — Duplicate exception applies as the post is over 6 months old :)

Waiting for the $99 year deal to happen again. Although its advertised on their site there is no stock instore.

    Anything for smaller families?

    • +1

I would recommend Belong in that case. You can share data across. Find a cheap $80 sim on ebay or facebook (that would give you 80gb the first month for $40). Data can be share across the sims. Put the other plans on $10 a month and share the cheap acquired data

      • Thanks but need very little data. Anything with a flat calling would be OK.

        • +1

$5 dodo plan. No data though.

        • Pick one of the smaller Belong starter packs
          $10, ends today - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/533785
          $20, starts tomorrow - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/535331

        • +2

Belong will be $10 per month per sim. So 3 family members is $30 per month total.

Bascially you all get $40 sim packs for the first month (these can be found half price in stores occasionally or on ebay nearly all the time) and you get 80GB to start with. Then you change halfway through the first month to the $10 plan and your 80GB rolls over and you get an extra 1GB each month for the $10. Unlimited AU calls and texts.

After a while if someone is using more than 1GB a month and uses up all their 80GB that you got in month 1, you can share the data between belong customers.

Also you an use the referal codes after you activate your first family member on Belong and you both get $20 credit (which is 2 months free each).

Best way to manage a medium to low data family.

  • +1

I have our house on this plan and it’s awesome, never run out of data and easy to manage

  • We've rolled over about 500gb at this point as 2 of the users only need about 1gb a month.
Will prob leave the plan soon as don't need that much data.

  • Are the sim cards free or do I have to buy them all?
Is that $5 per sim to start on the family plan?
Do I get to keep the $5 credit for each sim or is that dusted?
So for a family of 4, is that $100 for the first month?

  • +3

As a comparison you could buy 4 Belong $40 sims for $20 each tomorrow @ Coles and set them up with 80GB in the 1st month (option 2) then move to the $10 plan for the following months. So in total you would have 320GB data to share around plus referral codes would pay for 2 extra months for all 4 sims.

4 months would therefore cost you $50 a month but then you would need to move again. I suppose it depends on what your family needs, if you don't want to keep moving etc.

Personally at the moment I have 3 of us on belong. One sim it's on catchconnect, but I am moving it to kogan (3 months offer) After that I will decide for that sim. For another sim I might move to dodo as I also have 25gb latest ipad deal. So it all depends on your needs etc,,,,

      • The 1st 4 months would cost $30 each. After the 1st 3 months which is covered by the starter pack and $20 referral the ongoing cost would be $10 each per month using option 2.

Yeah obviously you can't stay on it forever as you will run out of data. The $10 plan only gives you 1GB per month. But you can change planes once per month, so you could move back to the $40 plan when getting low and top up with another 40GB.

        • +1

Yes I forgot about the referral. I am on belong at the moment but when I finish all the goodies I am not sure what I will do.

  • The sims can be used for iPad as well, right?

    • Good question, I actually don't know.

    • iPad would be behave just like a mobile phone, so should work fine. I had a sim in a portable mobile hotspot (in the car) and it worked fine.

Good deal. Me and My wife are currently on the $25 Aldi Plan with 18GB, both kids on $22.50 plans with Vaya (formerly Jeenee). If I can be bothered with the admin involved, a saving of $15 per month with more data and in the kids case a better network.

    • My friends have this deal for this reason. If you can't be bothered moving around it is a good deal for families.

  • Can anyone explain how it works if i wanted to port my family in from say telstra?

Currently have 2 x phones and 1 x galaxy watch

We would want to keep our same phone numbers, any advice is appreciated

edit - I did just have a quick read on the aldi site and hopefully it's as easy as they describe

    • Have a look here https://www.aldimobile.com.au/faq/2

Also does your watch take a normal sim? I don't think any mvno offer esims.

    • yes it should be straight forward. Be aware that it would be normal sims, not esims

      • yeah cheers. It's been 12 months since getting the watch so will have to double check if it does use a simcard

        • Watch uses eSIM and activated/linked to your phone number. It's only available through the main carriers afaik (i.e. telstra, voda, optus), so if watch LTE capability is a must, this won't work for you.

I ported 4 numbers from Telstra to this plan, but forfeited eSIM to my watch. Process was straight forward and quick. However, just be aware that due to C19 if there are issues with the port (unlikely) Aldi support is minimal/non-existent as call centres aren't available. NOTE: This is based on people posting issues on the Aldi Mobile whirlpool thread

Just something to note with the use of the "Telstra" network.
Aldi mobile uses a limited version of Telstra's entire network, which means you do not get access to all of their towers, especially in rural areas.

My subjective opinion using both the Aldi Telstra 4G network and the Optus 4G network is that as a generalisation, I am getting better reception and speed with the Optus 4G network. In rural areas there is no difference, as in those very remote areas only serviced by Telstra's rural network, ALdi does not have access to it (e.g. when I was recently in Brewarrina, my colleagues had Telstra network access, but I on Aldi had no reception).

I use this family plan because it is an excellent deal for data (rollover is a huge benefit - after 8 months we have 200gb in the rollover bank). However, DO NOT switch to this plan just because you want to the superior 'telstra network' because it's not superior.

    • That is so right, I would say that people need to try the network first before committing and spending all the money, I live in metro sydney so overall all the services are pretty good. I just go with the cheapest

    • We live semi-rural, and recently went from Optus to Aldi, as the coverage turns out to be the same or better. YMMV. We did a test run with a cheap SIM first.

    • +1

Yep. If you're rural, check your aldi coverage there first. As an example, Aldi is absent from a lot of the telstra network in Western Qld.

      • Aldi runs on the Telstra network, only slightly reduced coverage area, about 97% of it

  • +1

Is there any verification of "family"? What's stopping 4 friends who live in separate locations getting this family plan to save money? I'm probably missing something obvious. People do a similar thing with Spotify family plan.

Either way, we seem to be at the point where if you're paying more than $20 per month for a mobile phone plan, you're doing it wrong.

  • +3

An advantage of Aldi is that you can change the allotment. Need to get your teenage daughters off their mobiles? Zero their data limit and within 10 minutes they are 'grounded'.

Also they have what looks to be pretty comprehensive monitoring of the data. I can tell with a glance or a screenscrape whether they're using their phones after lights out.

A disadvantage is that you can only have four people on it. I might move to Belong later once the younger kids get mobiles.

  • I have 2 existing Aldi moblies how do I switch to a family plan to include 2 mobile number ported from elsewhere?
