  • Is it better than iPhone 7plus? I need an upgrade

    • +3

The DXOmark score for this is 116. The DXOmark score for iPhone 11 pro Max is 117. So camera seems to be comparable to iPhone 11 pro Max. Absolutely better than iPhone 7+.
But if you are looking at staying in Apple ecosystem then consider the iPhone XS/XS Max GG offer (with 12 month Telstra signup).

  • this vs xiaomi 9t?

  • +1

Can you put Lineage OS on this ?

  • +2

    Pros:

    Excellent rear Camera..
    Good size battery
    Good processor
    sdcard expandable (Rarity these days)

    Cons:
    UFS2.1
1080 screen (This could be consider a positive to some)
    Single sim & Not dual

In my opinion if you are buying this phone for the 5g aspect then don't.. Its basically like first generation. If you are looking for the exact same phone with dual sim (But 4G only) then look at the Reno 10x.. I purchased this over the 5G a few weeks ago for 100 bucks more.. It was not Carrier variant as well unlike this one..

Also, Oppo has released absolutely nothing in the way of a release date for ColorOS 7 on this device.. I noted someone posted a link to XDA on this thread which seems to imply it is coming out in June.. But, unlike all the other dates announced for Oppo devices that device is non existent for any schedule rollout on the Oppo site. So its unclear if that date on XDA developers is actually factual.

    • what is the UFS thing?

This phone is just 10x with 5g right? It should be same or better? Why would we pay more for the 10x?

Is it because we'll get updates faster?

      • Reno 10x
Supports dual sim.. Reno 5g does not. For me, dual sim is more important than a first generation 5g Handset.

        Reno 5G
There is absolutely nothing scheduled for it to receive Color OS 7 from Oppo.. I asked them directly & there rollout schedule does not have it listed. Plus, even if/when it does get the newer code its not clear whether u will be at the mercy of when Optus gets around to releasing it on there custom rom that this phone has. You could potentially flash teh standard rom from Oppo on it.. Then potentially warranty issues to contend with.. Thats assuming of course it gets Color OS 7.

All new flagships this year and late last year are being released with UFS3.0. Basically it doubles the read/write speed (relatively) when accessing online storage of a device.. Samsung has just released UFS3.1 which is even faster again. In my opinon UFS 3.1 aligns much better for 5g. If you download a large file, the write speed to the media will be your bottleneck. Only obvious benefit with a UFS 2.1 phone will be buffering (On some things) and latency.

On flagship phones (with 855 or 865 processors) there is notable difference with ufs 2.1 vs ufs 3.0. Albeit small.. Many youtbers have pointed this out.

        • yeah i don't really care about 5g - my phone plan won't even have it.

Good point about Color OS though - normally i don't really care too much about OS updates but I heard ColorOS6 is bad and 7 is a big improvement.

Dual Sim - i don't really care about that - does that many ppl actually put two SIMs in their phone? What for? Like a work and a home sim?

    • it's hard to find 4G version, may i ask where did you got your 4G ver? thanks

  • Optus version gets the android 10 yet? Sometimes only unlocked retail version gets update on schedule.

    • Yes.. that would be my concern.. I was seriously considering get this for the misses (I already have th 10x version).. But very dubious if this would even get an update for 2 reasons:

Oppo hasn't officially announced anything for it.. I even asked them direct… & its likely a custom wrong so (As you already noted) you likely be at the mercy of when Optus feels like getting around to it.. Thats assuming Oppo actually does release color OS 7 for it.

10x version on the other hand definitely has Color OS 7 already.. Its scheduled to be rolled out in Oz next month. 10x is the exact same phone that supports 4g dual sim.. This one is the 5g variant but only supports 1 sim card.

    • heh, worst thing is to be on the same Android 9 like all the LG v50 users. I posted on LG site and they removed my post and did not even pbulish it

  • Has anyone used the GCam Pixel modded app on this to improve the photos even more? Does it have specific development for it (like my OnePlus 6T). I'm thinking it'll be fine as shares same CPU as Pixel
    Any thoughts?

    • +3

I have got the GCam on my Reno 5g device and it works well. Detail on both the front the back cameras is amazing and portrait mode works well.

      • Great to know, thanks. Which exact version? My wife just went and bought one

        • +1

          version 23 - 7.2.010 by Urnyx05.

  • Get this or wait for Mi10pro or 1+8p for better camera, CPU, screen? Of course they cost $500 more..

    • I was thinking the same before however ended up with Oppo as it has better local support then the Mi as I was only able to buy it from international sellers

    • Deal breaker is no local warranty and support for one plus phones in oz

      • It's year 2020, yet both Xiaomi and 1+ still not having a single store in Australia.

Huawei does not have Google framework, and Samsung is using crappy Exynos, what other choice do you have apart from the $2k 4G Apple?

        • I wouldn't buy an import over 1k with no warranty you also need to pay GST regardless….

Aus simply not a market for Xiaomi and Oneplus, because we are such a small market. They won;t give a darn about it.

The only choice to grab local warranty phones for cheap would be these deals.

I have given up on Oneplus their 8 Pro too expensive. you can buy 3 Opp Renos 5G with that price.

        • +1

Xiaomi has an official online presence in Australia now, at least that's what I have been told. So you can at least count on our consumer laws to protect you.but this year their ridiculous pricing for mi 10 pro in oz market killed it for me.

    • I thought the same as I had been looking at both of those phones. But they will cost more than double…plus uncertainties with buying from overseas and not including possible customs duties….so I just went this phone.

Pretty happy so far…just getting used to ColorOS…..no Dark Mode. 😱

      • Dark mode will come. I'm with you though, it's actually pretty nice phone! Went from a OnePlus 5.

    BUY!!

  • Damn so tempting but I only bought the V30 6 months ago 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • +2

Switched to this from my Mate 20 Pro. Overall quite happy, but Color OS can be annoying (removing small things from Android - e.g. setting a monthly data limit, viewing screen-on time etc). Also doesn't like my Apple Type-C to 3.5 adapter (and doesn't come with one). Scrolling is very unusual - doesn't carry much momentum which I'm not used to and animations are slow/inconsistent even after playing with speeds. I can definitely see why people dislike Color OS.

Much faster to launch the camera and take the first shot which is nice, zoom is great and the overall image quality hasn't left me disappointed. Performance side-by-side is identical between the two and it manages to keep apps in the background a lot longer. Also no 'bleed' from the AMOLED screen in a pitch black room that the M20P had - it's a very nice screen.

    • +1

Screen on time can be viewed under the digital wellbeing (I think) section in the settings

      • Thank you!!

    • How are you finding battery? I'm currently using a google pixel 3 and that thing has such a poor battery.

      • I have been using it for a few days and battery life has been amazing. On 4G during the day and still have about 20% left when i plug in during the night around 11pm

      • Very good so far - not quite as good as the Huawei but that thing was ridiculous. The inbuilt battery saving is quite aggressive though, so I've had to go through my apps and manually enable some (eg messenger, smartwatch plugin etc).

I'm quite a heavy user and end the day with at least 20% (at 1am). I've switched off 5G as I really don't see the point at the moment.

  • if a firmware update doesnt fix the dual sim issue does any one if you simply buy a dual sim adaptor for a few dollars on ebay to fit in the tray will it work on this model?

  • Dang I just ordered one, Seems like a good upgrade from my trusty Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro

    Hope I have no Regerts…

  • No headphone jack… wireless isn't worth the premium

  • Thanks OP just bought one. My Mi 6 was finally starting to show its age. Volume up button is triggering randomly.

  • I used Oppo Reno 10x Zoom for 4 months previously, had sold and tried many other flagships now back to this one again, Things I love about it are full screen display always upto mark Camera and also super smooth always ready to capture, Selfie flash and 5x zoom are also a plus, then comes speaker sound and battery, I don't care about 5g or 4g but back to this again as it fulfills all my requirements in terms of a flagship from previous year

  • +2

Got one, now the last thing I wanna hear is a $599 P30 pro in the next few weeks..

    • Confirmed that till 17th this doesn't happen, so I also got one.

  • Anyone know if it's possible to flash OxygenOS or MIUI on this Optus 5G variant?

  • volte works with telstra?

    • Yes..

  • +1

Thanks OP, picked one up after agonising between this and the Samsung A71. When the A71 went out of stock at Samsung EPP that made my mind up for me. Specs for this seem way above others in the price range and it's working perfectly.

Pros: quality build, great display, stellar camera, fast charging, big memory out of the box and loads pages/apps buttery smooth and fast.

Cons: no dust or water proofing (same as A71 though), mechanical selfie camera is cool but introduces risk of mechanical fail/dust, not sure about the ongoing software support being Oppo rather than Apple/Samsung.

I've heard about concerns with the OS, but I've had no issues coming from Apple OS (in fact it seems to be a step up as far as customisation is concerned). I suppose time will tell.

Really happy with it so far.

    • +2

My dad has the A71 and i compared it to my Reno 5G, the Oppo is a better device overall. Premium build, really snappy performance and camera is so much better than the A71. Jerryrigeverything did a video on the sharkfin camera durability test and it survived so i don't think there will be issue with the mechanical selfie camera. It is Australian stock as well so will have local warranty if there are any issues.

      • Awesome - thanks for that. Yeah, I think it was the right choice

    • just picked mine up yesterday.

yep, thoroughly happy with it so far. And even ColorOS - i don't find it too bad. It looks a little different but most of the functionality is the same.

I don't expect we'll get ColorOS7 for a long time though. It's not coming out till June but then it'll probably be early 2021 before we get it from Optus. The thing I'd really like out of ColorOS 7 is dark mode.

The Android security version is December 2019 so I'm guessing at least 6 months delay.

      • fingers crossed ColorOs7 won't take that long….

        • I think Optus is slow at the best of times but also their priority will be better selling phones from Samsung etc. This will be last on their list.

I mean if it arrives earlier great but I can't see it happening. I bought the phone assuming it won't get any updates.

      • I updated my Reno2 Z to ColorOS 7 by using a vpn and setting the region to india. Then selecting Trial from the settings option in Update. That might work for your 5G as well.

        • Probably not because this is a different variant of the 5g.

          How is color7?

          • @witsa: I'm running Nova Launcher, so I don't notice it a lot other than in some of the settings.

  • Thanks OP jumped on the OPPOrtunity and bought one. I'll see myself out now haha…

Switching from the Pixel 3 so will be excited to see the difference.

    • Nice Gary.

  • Has anyone noticed the Google app using up to 70% of the battery drain during the day?
I noticed someone else had the same problem but I don't really want to disable the Assistant

    • +1

Not for me, my battery has been solid and no abnormal drain

    • +1

      No issue on mine

    • Have a look at my reply below to alohame.

  • +1

Absolutely beautiful phone, I love it, the camera is also better than I thought.

My missus has a Samsung S9 plus and the screen is bigger on the Reno 5G phone and to me looks just as good.

  • Picked up the phone today absolutely love it.

Question to those that bought one - does the selfie camera have a flash? I can only seem to get it to be an always on light.

    • Yes, the flash for the selfie camera is an always on light when you switch it on.

  • So only had this phone for a few days, and although the battery seems fine, I installed ACCC Battery and it shows a health of 88% with capacity being 3,500 instead of 4000.

is anyone else getting the same? Wondering if it just doesn't have enough time to accurately measure it yet or if I got a dud battery.

    • Is that a reliable app? Aren't most of the battery apps not conclusive?

      • It's seemed fairly accurate for me previously but I have no way to tell for sure.

    • With AccuBattery i am seeing a capacity of 3933.

  • +1

Thanks, purchased the phone for 2 days and played for 1+ day. Pretty good phone as I upgrade from iPhone 6s, this is my first Android phone even though I purchased and play my young daughter's TCL Plex before. Doesn't have iPhone X and newer experience so can't comment. But for $600, I think this phone is very good value. Just a bit heavier…

    • +1

It abit better iPhone X with no notch. And faster LTE speed. More versatile camera and night shot

    • Hopefully they will still provide security updates for the phone

  • Pressed the button and got one just now since my old phone has lasted for 3 years.

  • Anyone noticed insane battery drain with Google app? 30~70% every day!

    • +1

I was having a lot of battery drain, not with google app though, with the browser. I installed AccuBattery and from that i saw that my phone was not going into deep sleep while the screen was off. App recommended to do a phone restart and it fixed the issue. Way better battery life now.

      • +1

My battery life has been amazing!

      • I also restarted the phone and did a few other changes, not sure what works but the battery is back to normal.

    • Huh I just realised mine was doing that too. Battery life still was pretty good. Still got more than a day but yeah Google's background prices running for 22 hours. Restarted now so hopefully that'll make Battery life even better

  • Warning to others buying a glass screen protector. I bought from this listing and the glass doesn't cover the whole display.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-Oppo-Reno-Z-Reno-10X-Zoom-5G-…
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/88313/79801/annotation…
I now have to go through the returns process.

Has anyone bought one they can recommend?

    • The device comes with a glass protector

      • Yes, I'm aware though it comes with a plastic screen protector preinstalled. My preference is glass as it has a nicer feel and there isn't a bump with the bottom of the supplied case.

  • Im in need of a new phone, this phone is not available in any of the stores, i assume delivery only?

    • Yup. Only $6 for syd metro. Comes with a plastic screen protector and case too.

      • How u get $6, comes up as $14.95 on mine here ??

        • I just checked. Looks like they increased the delivery cost.

  • still doing my research noticed there is no wireless charging or headphone jack.

    • No Headphone jack is pretty standard in the newer phones. No wireless charging is a bit of a bummer but the battery last a long time so I'm fine with that.

      • yeah hard to find headphone jack on flagship phones nowadays. The battery life on the Reno 5G is so good that i don't even worry about charging it throughout the day and just charge it overnight.

        • Plus it charges so quickly with the charger it comes with. It's like 2% per minute.

      • Can you confirm its got that tap and go thing for payments? NFC? it totally different to wireless charging i assume, as I don't carry wallet with cards.

        • yeah it has NFC so you can use google pay or whatever tap and go payment you have

  • placed an order after physically looking at a reno z which my sister has with no complaints and it had the colorOS 6 on Android 9. Only other good deals was those samsung education account, but needed valid email and price point was much higher and pending stock availability.

  • The Handset other places are $1,499 while Harvey norman has it for $599….
I understand the Optus Logo etc etc
Does it affect the running of the phone?
Is it worth getting this phone given the cost savings i almost $1k?

    • The retail ver is getting android 10 behind of other Oppo phone akready. This Optus version is even later, have to get tested by Optus first, and you may find they are very very slow. If you do not care of software update, this one is same as the retail ver.

      • I wonder if it will be possible to flash the Optus version with the retail android 10 if and when out. From research updates in general look to be the downside of buying and investing in Oppo phones.

      • Thanks for your Opinion..i have not been sure so have held back so far. So it may not be worth considering.

      • I thought there is no Android 10 for Oppo reno 5G (even for retail version) yet.. only avail for 10X zoom version

even on the Colour OS 7… Reno 5G is not in the list to get an OS Update

Colour Os 7 roadmap & devices

        • +1

OPPO give dates for when their Australian-released phones will receive Android 10 and ColorOS 7

Ongoing: Reno 10x Zoom, Find X, R17, R17 Pro — Australia and NZ
          June: Reno 5G — Australia
June: Reno Z — Australia and New Zealand
          July: A5 2020, A9 2020, Reno2 Z, R15, R15 Pro — Australia and New Zealand
August: A91 — Australia and New Zealand

Your info is outdated, check this 5 May 2020 from ausdroid as well

          • @ce5himm: Yes.. It looks like they updated the release dates.. June its coming..

    • there is no optus logo on boot… and is using global firmware already…. the only optus stuff is the preinstalled Optus Apps which is u can uninstalled ur self

Still can update firmware with other sim… all Bands included

VoLTE n VoWifi works with Telstra n Boost

      • That's good news. However I will still hold and see if it does get android 10 like retail ver in June. That's one major concern for me from stop buying it now.

may I ask what's the latest software version ATM? According oppo's web it is CPH1921EX_11_A.11 May 2019 patch for unbranded version. Thanks

        • The harvey norman reno 5g firmware is CPH1921AU_11_A.18 and it is the latest update
