Microsoft just released the surface go 2. The base model is $399 usd and its selling here for $629aud.

Apple recently released the iphone se. The base model is $399 usd and its selling here for $749aud.

I know these are different products, different ecosystems that appeal to different buyers. It just struck me that apple and microsoft both released a product within weeks of each other at the same usd price and the australian price is vastly different.

I think this is worth a discussion. So go ahead and discuss.

iPhone SE is a phone, it's in way higher demand than a Windows based tablet and it has no competition other than the previous gen iPhone (there are very few compact flagship phones in the market in the 5inch range).

It'll make sense to price it in a way to maximise profits.

I agree with you accept for how they have priced it and positioned the phone in the USA as compared to everywhere else.

Really? US$399 + 10% GST + 10% for other costs such as currency exchange, import duty taxes, shipping, logistics, warehouses, security, staff, added consumer law, local advertising, higher Apple Store costs etc etc = US $483 = A$747. That doesn't seem unreasonable.

  • Because Apple are greedy

    edit: greedier

        ~Adobe has entered the chat~

        • Yes adobe are the worse. Fortunately I do not have to give them any more money as I can now get the full CC suite with all Lightroom cloud sync for free through work

An old sayin: You can only compare an Apple to an Apple

Apple recently released the iphone se. The base model is $399 usd and its selling here for $749aud.

    US$399 = AU$621
    + 10% GST = $683.10

I mean, yes it's $65.90 difference, but don't make it out like it's something really crazy…

Don't forget how much stronger AU consumer law is, too. A whole extra yr of support over the US.

Microsoft have probably chosen their AU pricing knowing that there isn't a lot of demand, like you say.

      Mod: Removed inflammatory sentence.

A whole extra yr of support over the US.

        Very true

        • Hmm … from another perspective, if Apple sells iPhone SE for $683 here in Australia, and only provide 1 year warranty. And you have to pay extra $66 for another year of warranty, how many of us will opt in?

          Just a thought.

@ausdday: Not much point to that hypothetical, to be honest. It's irrelevant.

By the way, they sometimes provide warranty for up to 2.5 years after purchase - as is my personal experience. $$ wise it's very advisable.

The extra year applies to Microsoft as well does it not?

        • I'm not sure but the comment I was responding to was detailing the US pricing compared to the AU for the iPhone specifically.

The Microsoft Tablet is cheaper in Australia than the US. Considerably when you factor in GST.

    • Yeah I noticed that too.

So a better thread title could be.

Why is Microsoft discounting their new Tablet in Australia?

BTW hows your Windows phone doing? 😀

          Good point.

          Windows phone went to heaven.:(

Does Microsoft running it's own retail store in Australia? Also, its also depends on the product popularity or demand. I feel it's a marketing strategy and product position in the Australia market. Making price competitive may boost sales?

Retail prices for electronics do not appear to be set by exchange rates.

For example, and I can point to many, the current top of the page bargain is for SSDs that are the same price as before the dollar crashed.
