Dog Poops Too Many Times While Walking

Hello! I thought I'd through this over to the fine people of Ozbargain. My dog used to just poop once at the start of a walk, maybe twice. Now he is pooping up to four or five times a walk whenever he needs to I guess. Is there any way to train out this behaviour? His diet is basically kibble and vegetables. My other dog (same breed) conversely only poops once at the start of our walk.

It's just exhausting constantly bending over to pick up poops ahaha (genuinely am an unwell person)!

TIA !

  • Can you tally your daily bowel movements and we’ll ascertain whether the amount is too many.

    • +6

well it's not 5 times in less than an hour lol.

      • -5

Get different breed like Burmese, Siamese or Persian.

      • +2

Check stool is there any mucus? If not then might be anxiety issue. If stool looks not all right then give brown rice chicken diet it will help to improve any infection.

        • nah no mucus :)

          • @gigi16: Good then might like mark territory lol when out of piss then shit everywhere 😂😂😂😂.

    • +7

I can help analyse the date..

But the results might be crap

      • -2

Chewing through all that data, you must be dog shit crazy

  • +2

if the frequency has changed might be worth just getting checked out.

    Frequency
The number of times your dog poops each day should be consistent – whether that’s once or four times per day. As long as it is the same every day, there’s no need to worry. Typically, most pups will go once or twice a day – although some may go four or more times! Our Smudge loves to go three times and spreads it out during her walkies. If we’re lucky she occasionally plans it right next to the poo bin.

It’s important to pay attention to how many poops you’re scooping each day to understand how your pooch is doing. If they go from being a regular once-a-day-er to needing to go four or five times, they could be having some digestion problems and need to see the vet.

    • +2

valid points thank you! I'm wondering now if there is something i can feed him to bulk out his poops a bit . Maybe more fibre :/ hmm

      • +1

        Lace his food with codeine.

        • -3

          +1 to codeine.
Our 3 dogs used to give us so much trouble but since we started dosing with codeine all issues gone.

          • @wozz: I was actually joking. I know nothing of medication effects on dogs. I know what happens when I take panadeine though…

          • +1

@wozz: I understand it is a joke, but nowadays you are just as likely to find a heap of stupid people to think you are serious and actually try it.

  • +4

Is the kibble cheap? lesser brands use fillers like dried beet that could be upsetting your pups bowels.
It could be a medical issue. Next time you are at the vet bring it up with them.

If you want to attempt to train it out, use a halti the same way you would check other bad habits.

  • +2

Not sure if its a behaviour thing that you need to out-train. Boy if I was going 5 times a morning, I sure would wish my parents didn't try and train me out of it.

Poop is not a bad thing for dogs as long as it's consistent and not runny. Much better than no poop! But definitely raise it with your vet and they should let you know whether you need to do anything.

    • Fair point. Upon reflection it might be more of a diet thing, ie the last few poops are always small and liquidy, so maybe if i can tweak diet to bulk them up … ETC :)

      • -1

Yep I always feel sorry for my dog when he has to eat the same brand every day, but vets always promote consistent diets (or very slowly changing them).

  • +3

As others have said, it sounds like you have a diet problem, not a poo problem.

Your dogs stools should be solid and dark brown. If its anything else, your poor dog either has digestive problems, allergies to food preservatives, or you are feeding cheap dog food with filler.

My dog is regular 2 - times a day (morning and night normally after food) and occasionally when on a walk. I feed Black Hawk Lamb and Rice and no digestive or allergy issues here.

Pooping is not a behaviour you train out of a dog.

    • Yes, upon reflection I see how this is a diet issue. Thanks!

    • +1

Pooping is not a behaviour you train out of a dog.

Obviously not completely, but plenty of dogs are trained to recognize there is a suitable time and place. Any dog that is housetrained, for a start.

      • Agree, my dog can pee and pop on command, I meant more in the content of OPs desire to train their dog to poo less…

        • +1

Same with my last dog. And I made sure his bowels were empty at home before heading out.

  • +1

Dog is excited. Take the diet advice. And for you, every time you squat down to pick it up its extra calories burned. no loss.

  • +1

What dry dog food are you giving? A lot of dry dog food these days have cheap carb fillers, and there is an argument that dogs don't need carbs. Perhaps you could try a good quality grain free food or a raw diet of 5 parts meat/bone, 1 part meat and 1 part veggies.

    • I honestly don't know, my mum buys it haha, will double check the ingredients :O I have heard about the 'fillers' issue with dog foods, I'll double check this is a good one.

  • -2

    3 little words.

    good.quality.food.

changes might indicate issues, dogs are slightly omnivorous but mainly carnivores, don't feed them veg!

Ours goes for small solid poops unless an occasional bit of (raw) chicken leg gets stuck (not sharp shards, never cooked chicken bones!), then it can be runny, but they are only rare treats and for teeth health.

    • I'm not sure why we got into the habit of feeding him veg, it was recommended to us a while back from a vet, yeah maybe its the time to cut the veg then.

      • what kind of dog is it?

        • pug!

  • +9

    Use a cork

    • +7

I can't, he's a pug and it will be too obvious.

      • Yep, your pug is missing it's L.

Edit: rookie mistake.. I should have kept scrolling (plug mentioned below).. :D

    • You beat me to the joke by 43 seconds!

  • +4

    Have you tried a plug?

    • not useless when i'm crying myself to sleep at night and need a cuddle!

On a serious note, dogs hate being held, they only allow it because they love you, but why put an animal you love through something they hate!

On a lighter note, any dog is better than no dog!

        • +1

i was just trolling - i thought that was the language of ozbargain i am trying to learn O:) hahaha. yeah they dont love being picked up which is fair, however if i am sitting down they do appreciate being cradled in my arms or sitting on my lap :P

  • +5

Ahhhh…. vegetables… the natural diet of the dog. The vegetables most feared predator is the dog. I've heard that wild dogs in packs will hunt down vegetables, sometimes just for sport…

    • You know what, I've been mixing frozen veggie mix in with kangaroo meat and offal for our dogs (as I read somewhere that veggies provided some benefit). But your post got me thinking and I'm not going to be bothered anymore… lol.

      • I'm sure they don't really matter, I just always laugh when I see people saying that they feed vegetables to their dogs (hell, even I have done it). What really gets my wick fired up is the arsehole Vegan types that force their life choices onto animals.

Dogs are opportunistic eaters, scavengers, and I am sure in the wild, if push came to shove and the only thing to eat was vegetation, they may turn to that.

        • yeah fair points - i think we only started feeding them some veg because we thought our doggo was having hair loss problems and some lame ass vet recommended it. pretty sure its not necessary at all and might cut the veg to see if it helps with his poops haha

  • +1

Vegetables are good for dogs! They should not be eating only meat…. and certainly not the high grain dry food. My dog loves eating beans and broccoli straight off the bush when walking in the garden. Often make up a brew of roo meat, peas, beans, rice, olive oil.

    • My dogs love veggies too - they have a carrot daily but they also love broccoli, pumpkin, red capsicum, zucchini, cauliflower… one is quite happy to eat lettuce and celery as well. The Vet said to go for it - raw veggies are fine for dogs, as dog treats.

  • +4

I have the same problem when I'm jogging.

    • +6

      Yeah, we saw the pictures.

      • You didn't need to pose for them.

        • iforgotmorethanmysocks

    • jogbog

or you had the runs.. while doing a run = runception

  • +1

Try plain chicken and rice for a few days and if that fixes their excess pooping, you know it's 100% a diet problem.

    • sure!

  • +1

mine typically poops once a day on a walk. BUT once I took her on a 3 hour walk - she pooped like 4 times. Now with covit - she's getting 3 walks a day and does it 2x a day - but generally small ones instead of the one medium size.

Ive put it down to length of the walk. secretly suspect - the kids walks vary from really short to decent….

  • +1

My dog poos twice a day with a mix of ivory coat chicken and cheap wet food from supermarket. If we go for a walk increase that to 5-6 because he is excited to be out of the house

  • +1

    Ewwwwww. Now I know why I don't have a dog :)

    • +2

I know but the op is doing the right thing and picking up the poop. Lots of people don't. Far too often I see dog poop on the footpath and I and others have stepped into it unsuspectingly.

Do the right thing dog owners like to op does. Pick up your dogs poop and in particular don't leave it on the footpath.

      • Yes, you are right. Well said.

      • +4

Deadbeat neighbours used to bring their dog out on a lead just to let it poop on my nature strip. They stopped when the turds mysteriously attacked their front windows.

    • haha they are small dogs so the poop is not that offensive!

  • +1

Take your dog to a VET

Something wrong with the poor thing

    • Just been to the vet, from this forum we're now pretty sure its a diet issue :)

  • +1

Don't ask Ozbargain, go to the vet. My late dog had a similar issue which ended up being signs of severe illness :/

  • +2

How is this on the front page of a bargain forum? 😂

    • hahaha i feel special :/.

  • +1

    Feed it less

  • Guess I'm blessed, my dog has never pooped while on a walk. I know she's not ill as she likes to leave plenty in the yard at home.

  • +3

Just bring a 9-iron with you and chip them onto people's roofs.

  • -1

My dog did this back in the days. He would poop 20 times in a row to mark his territory until he figured out how to use his doodle instead to lift up its leg to wee.

I did say NO everyone he did the poop thing while walking.

    • +1

      lol !

  • Have you changed your dog's diet recently?

    • +1

i think my partner has been sneaking in veg here and there. now aiming for a little more consistency with food so i can observe changes in his poops haha
