Recommendations for a Speedy 7" to 8" Android Tablet for around $300. Sub $400

Hi all

I'm looking for an Android tablet with the following requirements:

  • must be speedy. doesn't need to be the fastest thing around. Anything better than a SnapDragon 660 is good.
  • sub $400 ideally.
  • 7" preferably. 8" is acceptable. just need to be able to hold it comfortably in a one hand.

I will be using it mostly for gaming and reading ebooks. Hence, the need to fit comfortably in one hand.

    reading ebooks

    Get a dedicated e-ink reader.

    Thank me later.

    • I have owned Kindles in the past. Didn't like them. Too slow and doesn't work with epub (the industry standard) files. It's much more convenient to just use the Kindle app for iOS/Android.

Convenient yes, but if you read a lot. e-ink tablets are worth it. Or maybe pony up for a remarkable 2.

        • Hm. cannot game on any ebook readers and the remarkable 2 is way too big for my liking. 400g is very heavy to hold for a long period of time.

    iPad.

There are (practically) no more Android Tablet makers in the high-end :(
Just like there are (practically) no more Android Phone makers in the Small Phone segment :'(

You can try your luck with Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, S5, or S6…
….as these have ample processors for you, but they're all 10 inch tablets.

I already have an iPad Pro 10.5" which I find is way too big to be a portable tablet and way too small to be a productive portable computer - to sum up the iPad "fullsize", it's a complete mess.

      • what about iPad mini.

I don't know much about Apple products but it is right size and work as a reader and device for games.

        • I had my eyes on the iPad mini. But I don't want to be spending so much on a little tablet. Unless they update it to the new design, then I can reconsider.

          • @[Deactivated]: Ah, yes as DataScientist1 pointed out… what you're looking for is a Xiaomi MiPad 4.
It's been as cheap as $250, but currently sits at $420.

As for software, you're covered. There's an Official ROM of Havoc OS. So it'll have all the features you need in Android 9/10/11, and you should be getting OTA security updates every month. At this cheap price, it's worth paying that little extra to get the 3G/4G (LTE SIM) model, and also throw in a 256GB microSD card too.

So this covers you in terms of processor, of size, and of price. The Samsung options have a little nicer hardware, but the size is slightly larger which you don't like, have worse ROM options as I can see, and they're priced higher from $450 - $600 - $900 upto.

Even better than all those options, certainly right choice for you, latest 2019 iPad Mini, however, it does cost roughly $700 for the 256GB tablet. I just don't know if the iPad Mini is exactly worth x2-x3 of the MiPad mentioned above.

            • @Kangal: Thanks for the in-depth write-up.

Being a true ozbargainer. I can't see myself paying almost double the price for the same tablet…

I've been down the third-party path with old Android phones. They're never really as stable or good as the vendor OSes and I'm also not too keen on spending the time to go through the process of replacing the OS on the device.

Guess I'll hold out for a 2020 iPad Mini or a MiPad 5 or whatever the successor to it is.

      • Use IPAD

  • I know you have mentioned max 8'' but I have got the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 which I use quite a bit for reading on the train and at home. I read a lot of pdf's in addition to epub. I think bigger size makes it easier to read pdf's (although shouldn't technically matter if screen res is the same)

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/samsung-galaxy-tab-a-10… this is the current version

I got one in 2018 with S-pen which is also great for taking notes.

there is a galaxy tab-8 but screen res is 1200x800.

A quick scan of the offerings at JB show that there are not any decent 7inch tablets as Kangal mentioned.

If a size is important factor I think iPad mini is not a bad option

you could also consider Mipad 4

      • The Mipad 4 is nice. But it's a tad bit dated now. The software updates for it are probably reaching eol. If a Mipad 5 comes out for the same price. Then I will look at it.

        • redmi supposedly has a mipad4 successor

@NotAnAudiophile: mipad4 was so good that it bluemi away…
