  • What is your favourite coffee bean, and how does this compare?

    • +2

Grinders is my favorite, I switch between Grinders and Lavazza (7) I like dark roast, strong bitterness
      Least favorite is Vittoria

      • +1 for grinders, always consistently good. The new single origins beans at ALDI aren't too bad either.

      • +1 for Grinders

      • Which product exactly is the Lavazza (7)? Can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks

  • +6

Bit of a coffee snob here but could never justify hom kit (prefer to buy outside). Anyways covid got me using this stuff and gotta say lavazza is a fair bit better than the other stuff on the wollies shelves. Only reservation is the huge packet might not be the best for freshness. Prefer to buy the smaller packs so they stay fresh longer.

Freshness of coffee bean is something people don't take seriously enough. People would be amazed at the taste difference of coffee with properly stored beans. It makes me wonder when I see coffee shop after coffee shop with grinders full of beans and ground coffee overnight and through the weekend. Yuk.

Yeah, huge red flag to me is when I go to roasters to buy and they don't have roast dates on the bag or are selling month old coffee. If you're selling month old coffee your batches are too big. I would have thought roasters would want their product in your hands in the best state possible.

huge packet might not be the best for freshness

Aren't those beans roasted months ago and travelled more than most of us did in the last 5 years?

      • ↑↑ This guy gets it. Lavazza, Grinders (aka Coca Cola Amatil), Vittoria et al are bulk roasters. That "fresh" bag of beans from the supermarket may have been roasted 3-9 months prior to you buying it.

        • Would it change much at all as long as it is vacuum packed and stored at appropriate temperature?

          • +1

@team teri: Roasted beans are not vacuum packed. There are valves to let CO2 out of the bag while at the same time preventing O2 getting into the bag.

Yes, if you can't consume the beans in a week, you should freeze them

            • @[Deactivated]: Indeed, the only exception I am aware of to this is Illy, who have an inert gas production method for storage. Despite being roasted 1.5 years ago in Trieste, the beans smell amazing and make great coffee.

            • @[Deactivated]: Personally, I have no issues with freshness up to 2 weeks as long as the beans are stored in a fairly oxygen free environment.

Agree freshness is the most important starting point key in finding a decent coffee .
And you won't find it at any supermarket !

      • +1

Agreed the quality at coffee shops is better, but it's unaffordable for 3 cup a day.
I have to invest a Breville machine. Since then my barista skill improving as well as my mortgage/saving account

        • That's less than a kg per month. Plenty of coffee deals from roasters for about $30 a kg.

    • +1

The pack of Lavazza Perfetto Espresso I'm using at the moment has best before date 30/10/21.

Any idea how long before best before date they are roasted?

  • This or Aldi's (roasted more locally, from what I heard)?

    • +1

I like both, but Aldi wins because it's always cheaper

  • +2

I like the aldi dark roast. Makes a decent coffee for the price.

    • This.

    • I've never tried the aldi one. Like OP, I'm also quite a fan of the Lavazza (7). What's the Aldi one called? And given my preference, which type would you recommend?

      Thanks

      • Aldi have Lazzio Dark Roast and Lazzio Medium Roast, as well as a bunch of single origin bags on rotation (I read that it's currently Peruvian and Brazilian). All of them are roasted by Black Bag Roasters (Veneziano) in Melbourne.

(I haven't tried any, so can't recommended any particular one)

Aldi beans are great, if you're happy to pay a lot more, then sure go to your local roaster/find a good one.
