Their safety record for DOMESTIC is very average. However their international services are a different beast.

that article is like 4 years old. outdated source.
i do know that my friends fly back and forth on garuda and they're all alive.

• +3

well.. maybe we should read something more updated:

They are pretty awesome these days, have done a lot to be allowed to operate into Europe again… A qantas service I was on was cancelled and we were all put on a Garuda operated flight, pleasantly surprised.

Wow, can you refuse such replacement????
No matter what other's people opinion, but I would not trust them to change significantly over few years. It can take decades to change the culture (everyone from techs to pilots and management).
While bargaining on everyday stuff, flying, driving and health are areas where I do not want to save few dollars for cheaper service/product.

so is this a good airline to travel with?
what is it comparable to?

• +1

I have tried this airline last month, brand new Airbus 330. Very big legroom, nice entertainment unit, helpful and friendly aircrew. You hear this Qantas? "HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY"

but, the seat it was horrible. It's hard like wooden plank. My back hurts for hours :(
You guys need to stretch more often cuz cushion/pillow wont work

Seasonal surcharge for Xmas holidays brings the price to $949 - - still expensive.

• +1

It's still cheaper compare to singapore air and qantas for the same period, I think. And the baggage allowance is 30kg, compare with other airlines only 20 or 25kg .

• -1

Can you sriously compare them to Qantas or Singapore air? Or is it like comparing KIA to BMW? Not that the price is not ok, just not sure if you are comparing at the same league.

max 14 day abroad :(

i had been travelling with either airasia and garuda these days, as the qantas and spore airlines getting more expensive… well, for garuda itself, both local and international is quite acceptable in its service.. average around 7

comparing to airasia, the service it is maybe 1 grade higher, but it is 1 grade below qantas service.
the seat for sure is a lot better compare to airasia.

so, it is quite acceptable airlines if you are hunting for a medium price tix… for the amount of tix you paid, and that's the service you get…

also, i rarely heard of engine problem for garuda airlines, comparing to qantas a while back. but i guess qantas is getting better in term of checking the engine and customer safety. there has less problem these days on qantas, i almost never heard of it.

If you're interested in their history, Wikipedia has a long list of their incidents and accidents from 1950 to 2007 (12 fatal accidents & 1 hijacking).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garuda_Indonesia#Incidents_and_…

Yes, they've made an effort to improve since 2009 but is that good enough?

You know, EU didn't only ban Garuda airlines, they banned 3 other INDONESIAN airlines. To me, it's not Garuda we should focus on but rather the country. Don't get me wrong please, I enjoy visiting Indonesia and I adore the people too! But, my point is, Indonesia isn't exactly known for their high standards and quality. Perhaps this has changed in the last 2 years but 2 years isn't exactly a 'proven track record'.

I mean, in comparison with SIA, SIA has only had 1 accident with fatalities in year 2000.
In comparison with Qantas, Qantas has had a number of accidents since the 40s but they have not had any fatalities since 1951.
Garuda, on the other hand, has had fatalities in every single accident from 1950 to 2007.

im indonesian and i prefer to travel with garuda. their service is outstanding and Sydney-Jakarta route generally pretty quiet too. one thing that i hate about these latest improvement with touch screen tv, last time i travelled, this kid just playing a touch screen games literally in the back of my head. just imagine kids tapping on the screen the whole duration of the flight.

• maybe you have to tell them "diam" =D

• Ignoring their safety record, at least you'll be assured that all their flight staff are "natural" http://www.theage.com.au/travel/travel-news/anger-over-airli…

• Go Ahead Rest Until Delayed Announced….

They are used to be known by that =D

Been flying with them last year, I can say that they have lifted their game (service wise)…

Safety? It is all depends on your personal preference =D

• I've flown Garuda a handful of times to onward destinations, each time a stop in Jakarta and free overnight accommodation. The agent even had local contacts that could organize a rub and tug if that's what was needed after a long flight. Now that's service with a smile!

• Make sure you pack some snack in your cabin baggage.
My mates flight got delayed for 7 hours last week and they only give him one meal voucher ($10 or something)

You've got to be kidding me. I wouldn't fly on Garuda if the flights were free and you were given a $1000 each way. There's only one airline that has tried to land on a road heading towards the Perth airport instead of the run way. After Garuda did it the second time they closed down their Perth office.

This doesn't seem cheap to me, just stupid.

• Hmm, interesting that I hadn't seen it so I looked it up. Turns out they were going to land on a closed off section of a runway. Here's the news item:

http://www.watoday.com.au/travel/tragedy-averted-after-perth…

No comment from me on Garuda, but it wasn't quite landing on a motorway as you write.

• Thanks for the news link. I see now, it was an out of service runway rather than a road as I heard (sorry for the inaccuracy).
It sounds like a comedy when the pilots are querying why there are cars parked on the 'runway'. But the scary thing is they ignored the air traffic controller and landed on the closed runway regardless.
The article mentions that it's the second time, I don't have a published link to the earlier incident. But I understood they lined up on the road into the airport (Horrie Miller Drive) instead of the runway and then aborted.

As far as I know they are the only airline to do this at Perth airport (anyone know otherwise?). Because of this and many other incidents elsewhere they have a bad name, and closed their Perth office after this incident.

Hence Garuda would be my last choice.

• sorry I have to neg because Garuda's safety record is questionable

• yes, errr you're welcome …
hope u all get the good deals …
