It states that one needs VIP status to get it but I logged in and found I don't have it and yet I was given a code and could redeem the codeon Steam.

Here is how you should do it:

1. Log in
2. Click the "Reveal now" button and copy the GMG code.
3. Add the game to the cart
4. View the cart and enter the GMG code.

The game should now show as free.
You will then get a Steam code you can redeem on Steam as normal.
