  • I thought it was a massive tablet for a second… lol

    • +1

The base part is massive anyway….

      Edit 3.2kg in weight

    • haha yeah likewise, looks thin

  • +3

Thumbs up on the screen resolution!
Pretty good specs for a C2D too. Would buy it if I had a need for a laptop.

    [edit]
How much will you beat prices by?

  • The price seems ok for that screen resolution. but can't even find a review on Google.

  • eSATA + Express Card + DVI… Good screen res…
    So tempted… I don't need it though….

Activo website looks dodgy, no phone contact and no company details.
I would stay away from their products.

Activo is a Global company, they customize the laptop to different country by request. This model is made for Altech Australia Pty Ltd. Covered by 1 year Australia Local Warranty.

  • I thought it was a $299 tablet when looking at the photo
    LOL…

    cpu is too old

also the fact there are no drivers and support material on their website inspires confidence

    http://www.activo.com.tw/ProductDetail.asp?ProductName=GV-50…

    • Yeah, this laptop is a couple or few generations old but for web browsing and playing games (made before 2009), it's not a bad deal.

    • +1

Sure, the CPU is bit old, but is it not too far behind a Core i3 running at 2.1GHz (Its a C2D not an Atom). And since it has a dedicated graphics card, in some instances it could turn out to be better than an entry-level core i3 notebook with integrated graphics. At 299 it certainly has much better performance/value ratio than anything else in this price range (mostly netbooks).

True, the brand isn't a well known one. However taking the price into account this is a pretty good deal if you think the parts will last. I would take this over one of those mini netbooks any day.

      • Go to http://www.activo.com.tw/ProductDetail.asp?ProductName=GV-50…, select "Downloads" and click link to "Driver" - returns "This is a driver.txt", similar for "Manual" and "Other" files.
This isn't just a low-end white-box OEM but one that doesn't care at all about supporting users who made the mistake of buying their appliance.

  • looks cool …….. ?

  • nothing good or bad about it, cheap portable desktop or htpc

  • +3

Why can't laptop manufacturers make low end devices with higher resolution screens these days?

Looks like the only way you can get a high res device nowadays is to a) spend $1000 on a Macbook or b) buy a overpriced gaming or business laptop for the 1080p reso.

    • I'd also appreciate if they could throw an SSD in there too.

Even if they skimped out on the processor speed, memory capacity and video card, I'd happily take the higher res screen/SSD combo than faster proc/ram/graphics.

      • SSD's are well, pricey and if they chucked a decently sized one in there (e.g 128GB or beyond) it would mean the laptop would no longer compete in the low end / budget market. Which happens to be the largest.

And not everyone understands the fact that SSD's are bought for their speed, not their size, so the mass market who goes out shopping for a laptop would probably put "big hard drive" as one of their criterias for a laptop, rather than a laptop with a SSD.

Most companies would offer it as an upgrade when customized online. But very rarely have I seen an SSD equipped notebook in Harvey or Officeworks, for example.

  • The specs here and the actual specs on the website are different. None of the links showed a laptop with USB 3.0?

    • Acer 5750 come with USB 3.0 , not the Activo.

screen res @ that price? not bad at all!

    • excellent screen for this price!
